View Full Version : 93 Wagon - 1.8L worth upgrading?

I have a 93 Impreza wagon AWD and I'm wondering if there is a cost-effective way of getting a little more power out of the 1.8L. It's also an automatic, which explains the sluggish feeling. Not looking for fast, just capable of maintaining highway speeds without working too hard. Any suggestions?

Also, what is ballpark mileage for this car? I'm seeing low 20s as it sits - wondering if anything's wrong with it...

u should see high 20s mpg fuel usage. have u been regularly replacing the plugs, fule filter and pcv parts?

swap to a wrx automatic.

Hmmmm. It was serviced by a dealership at 120K miles, and it only has 126 on it. Suppose it still wouldn't hurt to check though.

And thinking of converting to 5MT if I can do it cheap enough. That should make things easier.

Thanks for the response.

Well if you can do all the work yourself it'll be cheap. If you're going to be swapping auto->5sp (maybe even 6) then I say dump the engine in while you're at it.

I got my 93L (FWD :( ) couple years ago(2 almost to the day....) with 126.

Powerwise...air intake silencer....doesn't do too much for power increase, but it does make a cool little zoom sound when you take it off.

I'm in the same boat you are man....but this litte car has a lot of bang

Gas Mileage....I'm sseing roughly 25 city/30-33 depending on the car's mood highway.

Hope that helps some

not worth upgrading the 1.8 motor. Go for an OBD1 wrx swap. You have a 93 so try to get a motor thats closest to your year, so it will be easier. You can find version1 and version2 frontclips for real cheap, which includes everything that you need minus rear axles.

Wow, 200K+ miles is great - I hope to get that from this car. The mileage thing is now starting to concern me - I'll have to take a closer look at the car this weekend. If I can get high 20's out of this car on freeway cruising, I'll definately keep it around.

Thanks to all that responded so far. Good info.

How "easy" is a JDM WRX swap? (V.1 or V.2) I also have a 93' sedan, but I'm kinda skittish about a USDM WRX swap and re-wire. And a 2.5 will work on the ECU, but I'm thinking that I want a bit more power than that.

there's a guy in FL that's still havin a lot of problems out of his JDM swap but it's possible...

Swaps are not easy, but not terribly hard either. You have to know what you are doing beforehand which requires lots of research and going through wiring diagrams. If you are electrically inclined then it wouldn't bee to bad. The mechanical part is easy.
