View Full Version : Defi control unit issues

So, I started my gauges install last night and everything seemed to be going smoothly.

I had used vampire taps off of the radio harness to power the Defi control unit (Ver. 1.0). I plugged in my boost gauge and fire up my car. The boost gauge worked fine (Defi Links), yeah!

After the test, I disconnect the boost gauge and went about hiding the wires and making things all pretty. After that I went to test the sytem again, but I got nothing. The boost gauge didn't light up or go thru it's self-check sequence. So, I tried my oil pressure gauge.....same result :(

Then I thought I might have damaged the meter wire when I was routing it thru my dash. So I swapped for different wire, no luck :furious:

As a last test, I checked the fuse for my radio. Still good....WTH!!!!

So far, I've eliminated the gauges and meter wire as the issue. The only other thing(s) it could be are the power wires from the radio harness. Or the control unit itself...ARGH!! I could easily test the power wire with my DMM (as soon as I find it). But the control unit, I have no idea.

I guess my question is this: are the control unit particularly sensitive? Did I blow mine up somehow? If it is the control unit, can it be reset somehow??

thanks
mike

Did you connect the wire to the correct port on the defi link. I know there are (2) ports on the back of the Defi link, one for the BF series gauges and the other port for a different series gauges.

According to the back of the box that my link meter came in "Meter Output 2" is for the BF series gauges, and "Meter Output 1" is for the other series. This info is for the Defi-Link Control unit II.

I wasn't paying attention if the control unit I have (Ver. I) has different harnesses for the Link series vs. the BF. I'll check that when I get home.

Would be a silly mistake if that were the case.

Another quick question, does your radio still work? If not this would be a good indication that there's something wrong with the +12V power wire.

Also, check the ground wire, and the acc wire (ignition) wire.

I highly doubt you blew the unit, you would have blown the fuse in the accessory panel.

Haven't hooked up the radio to find out if it still works. I suppose a DMM could tell me that, as well. Rather than manuevering the radio into place...that thing is HEAVY!!

Normally, I would agree with you on the fuse. But I had a hardwire kit for my XM installed and that died, recently. But the fuse is fine. I'm hating these electical gremlins right now
