View Full Version : What shot (dry) nitrous is safe on stock WRX?
First I'd like to say hi to everyone, as this is my first post :)
I currently own a Corvette and I am considering a used WRX as a daily driver for this summer which will include some long commutes.
Question: What is a safe DRY shot of nitrous to run on these cars? (2.0 WRX turbo)
Perhaps one of you could point me in the direction concerning nitrous applications on these cars?
thanks
snvin 03-17-2005, 09:44 PM Well considering that the max dry shot possible in ANY setup is about a 75 shot, I'd say that's about right.

thanks, given the size of the engine, I was assuming around that. I have ran 100shot pills on the Corvette, and 150shot wet setup.
I tend to like dry setups more for street use in case anyone was wondering why I'd go with a dry setup.
How does the WRX generally respond to nitrous? Anything in particular or anything different about the WRX when it comes to nitrous?
gpatmac 03-17-2005, 09:53 PM Try to PM AzScoobie/Kingpin (aka Clark Turner). I believe he's a big fan of N2O.
ebeck 03-17-2005, 10:29 PM My reading out here leads me to believe 50 shot wet is pretty safe bet. Do a search on this. It has been discussed to death. Search for AzScoobie and NOS.
Good luck!
snvin 03-18-2005, 12:27 AM I haven't heard of any special considerations that need to be taken into account when putting a N20 setup on a WRX, but that's not surprising, because you'll find that (generally speaking) the WRX crowd is not big on nitrous (so it's not discussed often).
With a stock WRX as a starting point though, it's very easy to find lots of power with a few exhaust mods + some engine management.
:)
Any reason why you are thinking about nitrous right off the bat as your plan of action?
Just curious, as most people start elsewhere.
azn2yunr 03-18-2005, 01:20 AM to run a dry shot or a wet shot in a wrx a new 255 lph pump will be nessary for more fuel. the stock pump wont be able to keep up with the pressure
ebeck 03-18-2005, 12:03 PM Run wet or run real lean and boom. So I gather.
I suspect the biggest reason the wrx crowd doesn't favor nitrous is image (whether its the cheater image or the unreliability image). Its still the biggest bang-for-the-buck mod, and the ONLY way you're going to significantly improve low end and spool characteristics on a wrx.

I most def have plans for other mods as well, but I already have several nitrous setups laying around...might as well make use of them.
I personally think 1 big reason that nitrous is not popular is because of the pure ignorance factor. Many people have absolutely NO idea what nitrous even is, let alone how it works. I read time and again... 'dude, nitrous is bad! how can you say injecting a flammable liquid into your motor is safe!?!'
In the grand scheme of things I may be wrong, but I personally feel nitrous is just as 'safe' as any forced induction application.
Kingpin 03-18-2005, 01:45 PM I have seen 50 shot Dry setups used without issue. The Stock Car is very rich to start with so there is some room in there. WRX's gain 2-4 psi in boost with a 50 shot so you might want a boost control of somekind. A bone stock car with a 75 shot will run 12.7-12.8 @ 100mph or so. I have seen this with my own eyes.
On my car a 50 shot takes .5 to 1 full second off the time and adds 5mph. I use a wet kit. I have sprayed up to a 90 shot on my JDM motor which is stronger. I sprayed a 90shot on my 2.5 motor with GT30R turbo. Clutch would not hold.
On a WRX a 50 shot is worth up to 75whp. Nitrous is alot of fun and its a great back for the buck. I dont know why WRX owners dont use it. I think its because they have never setup a kit and used it so they are scared.
2 years ago my WRX was running 12.7's over and over and over.. Right around 109mph. I tossed in a gallon of C16 and sprayed a 50 shot but with one step leaner fuel jet. Results where an instant 11.82 @ 117mph and go booted off the track. 1.6 flat sixty ft time..

I see you have some actual hands on experience with nitrous and the WRX, thats great.
With your experience and this car, would you recommend ever using the dry setup @ 75 shot, or is this the sort of car that really needs to be ran wet?
Also, assume 50 shot dry, how extreme can you go with mods before you start having issues with the dry setup?
'dude, nitrous is bad! how can you say injecting a flammable liquid into your motor is safe!?!'
Dear GOD man, do you know what would happen if something accidentally caught FIRE in your combustion chambers?!!
(I should clarify this statement, I do understand that Nitrous Oxide is nonflammable and acts only as an oxidiser and a buffer in the combustion process.)
attitude 03-31-2005, 09:26 AM Clark, i will be running a t-67, and am looking to use nitrous to make up for the lag. what do you recommend, wet or dry, what size, etc. i have a forged bottom end, exedy clutch, and all supporting mods for this.

Bump. t67? Jeezez - You're gonna run a negative 10 sec. 1/4 mile.

I loved nitrous in my WRX. Till it exploded :-)

boardertj 04-01-2005, 02:30 PM i am going to be running a 50 shot on my 04 wrx with a vf22 and supporting mods. im gonna send my ecu to clark to have him ecutek it. hopin to break 12's. i am a big fan of nitrous. just cant beat 75whp for around $600.
blackie 04-01-2005, 04:02 PM dont do a dry shot on a wrx. unless its very VERY small. use a nice wet set up, and direct port would be a big plus. and also use a window switch so it can only spray between say 2500 -7200 rpms so you dont mess your chit up.

that can go 11s
I will be running UTEC stg 4, if I got no2 would i have to have it tuned for that, too?

yes, your utec can spare a map
Colin84 04-01-2005, 09:19 PM Yes...

I'm not a utec n00b nor a n00b at driving the WRX down the 1/4 mile, but I've never experimented with n20.
Anyhow, it would seem to me that you'd want to have a manual switch to hit after you're done bouncing off of the rev limiter.
Converted 04-02-2005, 01:22 AM Yeah clark told me stories how years ago he and mike would run all night long against each other and whoever had more N.O.S would be the winner that night! LOL
thetikler1 04-02-2005, 01:42 AM well what about it running with a 2.5 cobb tune? the setup runs rich as it is, and i have gauges (egt, oil, and boost) so i could monitor for too hot, or too much boost. I'm tempted to just see what it is like. I have the vf34 cobb 2.5 map with stock intercooler (might be a restricting factor here).
what do you think? yummy a fifty shot would be fun!

sprx19 04-13-2005, 11:30 PM What brand kit are most of you guys using? Is Zex about the best for a small wet shot?
zinc99 04-13-2005, 11:44 PM get an uppipe first wth NO2 that cat is going bye bye.

Considering smallest direct port is 20 per cylinder (times 4)... I'd be weary of an 80 shot on a bolt on WRX... direct port or not.
NX or NOS are great kits... I just like them for simplicity basically.. that and NOS has been around forever.
boostdog 06-26-2007, 04:29 PM Well guys it's been over 2 years since this post was discussed.. what over the past 2 years is your take now on nitrous?
boostdog 07-06-2007, 02:39 PM bueller?
