View Full Version : GF4 ('97 ImpOBS) suspension swaps
erikkellison 03-20-2005, 04:16 PM Anyone out there running some sort of non-standard suspension on their car? I drive a wagon, and I think the rears might be different, but as far as KYB AGX's are concerned, the non-wagon rears will work, so maybe the rear isn't all that different, even if there is a different fitment for the GR-2's.
Anyhow, I am looking to upgrade suspension, and I see a lot of people advertise stuff for other models, and I would like to know what might ALSO work on my car. I noticed that I use the same front Koni Sport inserts as the 02-03 WRX, but the rears are different. People have suggested that I use STi takeoffs, but I don't know how those are going to fit. Any fitment advice would help as it seems to be much easier to find replacement suspension for other cars besides my own. Thanks!

wish i could say i did...i'm actually lookin to upgrade my suspension as well for my '96 Outback Sport...i'll keep lookin and if i find anything i'll let u know....
CirrusWRX 03-22-2005, 03:19 PM My g/f has a 1997 impreza L wagon - we wanted to change the suspension on the cheap and ended up getting the AGX's and mated them with RS springs. I know that's not the BEST combination out there, but the price was right and it's been fantastic. I like running it about 3 on the front, 2 in the rear, and we've autox'd it once, and she drove it at Limerock.
There is nothing "different" about an OBS vs. a regular Impreza. The wagon has some different spring rates, esp. on the OBS, but otherwise, geometry isn't any different.
hope that helps!
PS - upgraded rear sway bar = very nice and cheap upgrade.
erikkellison 03-22-2005, 03:32 PM It's looking like I am going to just settle for AGX part #'s 734006, 734007, 733010 & 733011 (apparently the rears weren't "made" for my car, but they will "work"). This way I can afford to replace what I blow, and don't have to deal with a custom install from the likes of Koni, or any other custom job. However, since I am still in the planning stages, I am flexible and open to all suggestions and information!
I still need to know what kind of springs will fit my car with the same length but have a higher spring rate. I heard that the LOB springs will, but I'm not sure what MY's will work, or if that's even a cost effective solution in comparison to GC's because I'd have to get the LOB springs from Subaru, and that's always extra dough.
redwagon 03-22-2005, 11:25 PM AFAIK the OBS springs are the longest OEM spring fitted to an Impreza model. You'll notice that all aftermarket springs are the same length or shorter than stock. So, if you're looking to keep your current ride height, I think the stockers are the only answer. You may find the stock springs are enough with uprated struts. If you're looking for something like the stock Impreza height but with a higher spring rate, I highly recommend the STi ver.5 springs. Very slight drop over the L spring, good compromise between body roll and ride quality.
Keep check if the Legacy Outback springs fit. You may also want to check into early Forester springs. Good luck.
<-- has v.5 springs and struts, changing to AGX's in near future.
CirrusWRX 03-23-2005, 10:14 AM Yeah- bear in mind with the AGX's that a drop of more than an inch or so will cause the struts to prematurely wear out, as reported by not only KYB, but people on NASIOC et al.
So basically, if you reuse your top hats and hardware, you can use AGX's from just about any MY with the same body style. Obviously, go with something wagon related to keep the same height and reuse your stock springs if you don't want it any lower. As was said, you'll probably have a hard time finding anything that's going to work for your needs: same height but stiffer.
Good luck!
stentorian 03-23-2005, 09:43 PM I have a 93 Impreza L wagon, and I have upgraded suspension, and the AGX's came off of a RS coupe, work fine. I have KYB AGX's, SPT/Eibach springs, and Cusco camber plates front and rear. Very nice and stiff setup. I run the struts usually on 2/5. Right now they are on 1/2, because my L seats aren't that confortable, hahaha!!! As far as the cars height, slightly lower than stock RS suspension, I might look for something a bit lower though. Other than that very nice setup, and possibly for sale if the price is right.

erikkellison 03-27-2005, 08:16 PM Apparently there's a company out there called King from Australia that makes aftermarket springs that are made with higher rates and give you a choice of linear, progressive or double progressive, and whether to lower the car, keep the stock ride height, or raise the car. These sound interesting, but it's hard to find out which are made to fit my car. Anyone running these that are made to keep or raise the ride height, are at least progressive, and are made for our cars (with an increase in spring rate)? Part numbers??
I hope that answers the concerns about the AGX's and dropping my car. I drive rally. I do not intend to lower it.
So it's looking like the AGX's with potentially new springs depending on availability (and price), and if I don't like it, new (Group N) tophats (if they exist for my car) and maybe a strut tower brace. No sway bar for me due to my driving style, or solid endlinks because I want to maintain independent suspension (at least I think that's how it works).
