View Full Version : Dying in the rain? (98 RS)

For some reason, my car dies in the rain. Mainly accelerating from idle. Bogs down REALLY badly and barely fires. Then all the sudden it catches and goes like normal. Not sure whats causing it. Thought it was the injen CAI, so I bought a weapon R, still doing it. I'm getting a new coil and wires tonight, thinking that water is getting on them and shorting them out. The other problem occurs when I punch it in the rain, it runs fine, then cuts out completly, then starts firing again. I've also heard it could be water dripping from the hood scoop onto the knock sensor, so it pulls timing. I'm pretty sure its a short somewhere. Could also be a shorted o2 sensor, because I just had a random tech cat section installed, they could or accidently striped a wire. Any other ideas? Why is it doing it only when I accelerate from idle, or when i punch it? The car idles fine. No CEL's, I did get one when I had the injen. I will also say the car does'nt do it as bad with the weapon R... But the weapon R intake filter is bone dry. Ugh, and ideas are appreciated.

Check the bulkhead connectors on/near the firewall for water/corrosion in them. (main harness)

I would check the spark plug wires for cracks too.

Coilpack and wires.

Start the car and pour some water on the coilpack,
Look for arching
Profit!!!

My Legacy did that, new plug wires cured it.

I changed the wires and coilpack about a week ago, rained last night, drove the car. Looks like it solved the problem :) Now time to drive in a downpour to test...

Thanks guys!
