Well what can I say it was a good day and all went smoothly on the Dynajet. I tuned the Element Time Attack WRX on VP race fuel around 30 psi and then some :) My egts were relatively low considering the power output so I was able to run 12.5 to 13.0:1 AFRs with egts peaking at 880C. Actually I was forced to run AFRs in the 13s as my Perrin 816cc injectors were running 100% but I’m sure the Walboro pump was also at its limit. I didn’t think I was going to max out those injectors as they are obviously very large but I think its time for some 1000cc low impedance injectors.

The car felt really good after we tested new modifications to airflow in and out of the engine so I knew it was time to hit the dyno on race fuel. It only took an hour to tweak out the race map with the new 2.14V7 Hydra software since I was able to block out large portions of the map to remove fuel and add timing.

It was a perfect day so I’ll show you the uncorrected numbers also:

Nice numbers! I noticed you have a fogger system. Were you spraying on this pull? Also, Are you able to fit a front strut tower bar with that turbo kit?

Thanks and yes I have an NX system but it's not even hooked up. I would love to use it but I'm a little timid without knowing the rod strength. I'm waiting for someone else to try it on the stock rods first

It may just have to wait until we finish the race engine. I have it “pilled” for a 75 shot which has netted over 100 whp in the past so no doubt if the rods will hold it should make 630 whp if we have enough exhaust flow.

WoW.. So is this turbo like an in the middle of a Gt35R and a Td04R?? I would imagine that the Gt65R would be a bit bigger than a 35R.. Phil how would you compare both those turbos to the Gt65R, How`s the spool and what types of numbers would we all be lookin at if you where to do a pump gas map?

AWSOME! Nice numbers, and great work with the Hydra. Hopefully we can see some 600+whp dyno graphs from you guys in the near future. Keep up the great work.

Thanks for all the compliments. Just so you know GT65 stands for Garrret turbocharger 65 lbs. It the name of the kit and not the turbocharger itself.

the Hydra never demanded the use of a maf, or even supported it for that matter.

great numbers phil, can you tell us if there is anything different with this turbo and the GT35R? what a/r exhaust housing did you use, what diameter uppipe, what headers?

Any idea what it would do on 91?

I was wondering Element and WorldOne, why did you guys use a differernt Car this time around when U went to the Time Attacks?? and when going with a track car with a turbo that large... what are some basic supension mods I should do when Install my GT35R kit?

Thanks and great job, when will time-attacks 2005 go down and where

he ran a 11.9 sec 1/4 mile at 120 mph on pump gas, so im guessing mid 400s on pump.

StealthWRX
04-17-2005, 02:40 PM
actually i think that 11.9 was using a vf series turbo and nitrous on a 2.0. (Correct me if Im wrong.) This new setup should run much faster.

no you didn't.
you said you didn't think phil is doing a gt35r kit based on something he said months ago and i said he is. my conversation with him was weeks ago and i've got one coming as soon as it's ready.

but I guess he knows more than you and I combined

when you actually hear me say that, you can quote me on it.

Last year’s Time Attack, World One brought their Skyline R32 but the oil pump failed so the car didn’t make it. We brought our own WRX instead of sponsoring the World One STI.

For setting up a car this powerful, basic suspension mods don’t cut it unfortunately. You should upgrade to a full coilover setup that has fairly stiff springs and if you have a WRX you should upgrade to a larger brake kit such as the Stop Tech kit used for the STI. For the STI if it’s a street car you can get away with upgraded pads, lines, and fluid, but if the car is going to be raced with a professional driver, upgrade to the Stop Tech kit as you will need the larger rotors to help keep things cool and the rigid calipers feel much nicer.

2005 Time Attack details are still not finalized.

Thanks,
Phil

Element Tuning

This is not a Garret GT35R turbocharger.

the Hydra never demanded the use of a maf, or even supported it for that matter.

great numbers phil, can you tell us if there is anything different with this turbo and the GT35R? what a/r exhaust housing did you use, what diameter uppipe, what headers?

This turbocharger is not a Garret GT series turbocharger but it runs an .8.. exhaust housing. The details of our kit from the headers to the turbocharger are under wraps for now, sorry.

Jared,

It's not just the turbocharger itself but the sum of all the parts working in perfect harmony. This took many versions of our turbo kit, careful selection of materials, pipe diameter, AVCS mapping with the Hydra, and of course tuning.

We haven't tested any aftermarket manifolds yet to know if there is any truth to that but it would be interesting to find out.

Good Job Phil. Nice numbers. The injectors are fine. Its the pump/lines that are done. Easy fix is twin pumps.

Thanks Clark. I don’t think this was really a fuel pump issue anymore as I just recorded my fuel pressure during a 3rd gear pull. Peak fuel pressure hit 83.7 psi and it only dropped to 82.3 psi at redline. Keep in mind the Hydra runs the pump a little harder than the OEM ecu.

Are you also seeing higher pressure with the twin pumps?

I think it's time to try the 1000 cc the injectors.

Thanks,
Phil

Well. We where in the same boat with High IDC's and running out of fuel. I was getting some pressure drop right around 475whp. With the twin pumps installed even at 525whp we only had IDC's of 79%. Pretty major drop. Sure, larger injectors could fix your problem but if you look at the flow chart on a walbro at that kind of pressure you will find it falls short so I really think its a pressure to flow thing. At 30+ psi you are getting alot of fuel pressure.

On my car what I did was this. I removed the washer tank bottle since my washer never worked from day one. I then installed a second stock fuel filter on the Strut tower. I T'd the line to the twin filters and then tapped the perrin fuel rail block for the second line. Now I have double the capacity of pressurised fuel in the engine compartment and twice the flow to the rails.

The main reason we dont want to jump to larger fuel lines is safety. The stock fuel lines are run in a safe manner so if you get T boned you are unlikey to get a fire going. Running your own lines is just not a good idea on a street car. At least in my opinion. For this reason we chose to go with twin pumps which is cheap, it works and the safety is not compromised.

Phil, any thoughts yet on wether or not your kit may work with the A/W IC Chad Block is coming up with? Any idea when this stuff will be available?

It would be extremely difficult or the IC would have to be very small to fit next to that huge turbocharger.

I tested an air to water IC three years ago without much success on a street car as the water pump could not flow enough through the heat exchanger to prevent the car from detonating after a few repeated hard runs. For drag racing they are great as you can ice them down so they cool below ambient temperature and only need to stay cool for 10-12 seconds.

I think if Chad can solve the water flow issues I had, it may work very well.

Phil

(not to hijack)

but
Phil,

my system uses about 4 gallons of water, and a huge radiator (26x1.125x10)...all this stuff is made for water cooling...not oil....

regardless....

it's taken some revisions for me to get it the way i want.

LOL! This post is so old it's pre-Crucial Racing support. I just accidentally posted on this thread, and then deleted it.

In any event if you do a search for "Element Time Attack" you'll see my love for Crucial Racing's steering quickener and Thermostat. :)
