View Full Version : TimeSlip Critique Needed, Help me get in the 12s!

Well I finally took the STi to the strip. This was the first time I have ever been to a 1/4 mile drag strip, I think I did pretty well for being a rookie, would have loved to crack a sub 13 time but it was getting crowded and I was by myself... Anyhow please critique. I was able to pull of 1.7 60's pretty easily but I think I am shifting slow, I know my 4-5 shift is very slow and I think that is killing me the most... My first run was a 13.6, let clutch out too slow 1.9 60', second run was a 13.8, 1.9 60' and missed 2nd of all gears.

Finally got the hang of it and here are my best 2 runs:

Best:
RT .916 (.5 = perfect)
60' 1.707 (And I still didn't feel like I got a good launch)
330 5.284
1/8 8.252
mph 81.88
1000 10.876
1/4 13.076
mph 103.4

2nd Best:
RT .790 (.5 = perfect)
60' 1.732 (actually spun somewhat bad, the track wasn't the best)
330 5.386
1/8 8.867
mph 81.80
1000 10.979
1/4 13.171
mph 103.78

So for those who know how to analyze time slips, with a 1.6 60' and better shifting is it possible for me to run in the 12.8 @ 105 range?

(I'm also running 5zigen cast 18s but I gutted the trunk)

Some other people there also said this is one of the slower MD tracks (Capitol Raceway) and that it slopes slightly upward near the end. They said subtract .2 from what you run here if I were to go to MIR.

yes, stock stis are capable of running 12.8-9. heat up your manifolds before and during staging (rev the engine to 3-4k before staging and while staging rev to redline then let it drop to 4-5k repeatedly). also, try flat-shifting to bring the times down after launch. I've never been to Capitol Raceway but i've been to MIR, any reason you chose CR over MIR?

How does heating manifolds affect or drop times. What about Heat soak.
What is Flat-shifting. Never heard of it.

Flat shifting is keeping the gas to the floor while shifting.

As for heating the manifolds, I'm not quite sure. There was just another post in here about dyno numbers being low because the car was rested between runs and the manifold cooled.
From what I've heard if everything is hot and you wrap your headers/manifold then there is less of a temperature gradient in the flow which helps.
Also, you get better combustion at higher temps but the header temp wouldnt play a part in the combustion.

And FYI, you dont need to include your reaction time as it doesnt play into your 1/4 mile time.

pretty good times for your first time out. I'm assuming your only mods are tbe and utec? Was the utec professioanly tuned or were you running a stg 2 map from txs? Catted or not? I had a smiliar setup (txs catless tbe and utec stg 2 map) and ran 12.80 @ 106mph with a 1.64 60ft. I think a tbe and utec has been known to be as low as 12.4-12.6, but it's definitely not common. I bet your next time out you'll break 12's. I would recommend letting the car cool down for an hour or 2 before making your first pass on the day, also icing your intercooler with bags of ice will help cut heat soak down while waiting in the staging lanes. The cooler our cars are the better they run. Also, a kartboy shifter and bushings will help with fast shifting, quite possible the best $175 spent if you plan on drag racing. Your 60ft times are really good but 1.6's are possible on every launch, although maintaining consistency with 60ft'rs is hard. Oh, the 18's are not helping either, although I bet they look good. Although flatfoot shifting has yeilded better times, I would not do it unless you want to jeopardize syncros and other driveline components. good luck!

nothign to be ashamed of good numbers

letting the manifold heat up kinda goes against my experience at the dragstrip. on my cars and friends cars icing down the manifold between runs helped improve et's greatly and on a friends 1.8t gti actually netted consistant 2-3 mph higher traps after a good ice down. we would actually test it, run a few runs with just a cool down and some ice on the intercooler and then runs with icing the maniold and intercooler.

Just because CR is 30 mins from my house and I don't think MIR is open this weekend due to NHRA events.

yea mods are just tbe+utec. downpipe is helix catted. and utec was tuned by turboxs. I put some ice in the intercooler water tank and was spraying before my runs. I think the 4-5 shift of all is killing me the most. For whatever reason my peak boost was just a tad low, I am tuned to hit 18 psi peak but was only hitting 17 on the runs, not a huge deal but just wondering what would cause that?

17-18psi is probably all that you'll see. good to know txs tuned your car. get a kb shifter and bushings, ice the ic once you get to the track and btwn runs, and with a couple more practice runs you should see upper 12's.

Did capitol resurface their track? Good times great 60 ft's

I think he was talking about the EXHAUST manifold, so no ice there. I believe this is to get the exhaust gas velocity up.

Your launch is good, you just need to work on your shifting. You should be running mid 12s easily with that setup. I run 12s with a K&N panel filter and a stock catless DP.

Go buy some Dry Ice, that is what I use on my TMIC. Regular ice is 22-30 degrees dry ice is -109f. I ran a 12.47 and I freeze my TMIC before every run, it freezes over. It really works. Also Cool your manifold as much as you can, no sense sending cold air through a hot manifold. I cool everything on top of the car, my times don't lie.
sorry for the huge photo but you will get the idea.
