anyone put 272 or higher cams in there STi.
i know in a bone stock evo a simple cam swap makes the car a beast up top.
so i was wondering if it is the same if done to an STi...

we all know the advantages of having avcs..(quicker spool up)
but what would happen if you just dropped those cams (272) in there.

yes, I want to know more info on this as well, when droping in a new set of cams can we still use the AVCS of are we loosing this feature?
If the function of the AVCS is to adjust the angles of the cam loves around why do we need aftermarket cams?

right is it a drop in or is tuning involved also

you need a tune, also the VF39 will not benefit greatly from the hot cams because it's a dinky turbo. The 16G in the evo is a larger turbo that does benefit from hot cams, and that is why cams are a popular mod on the evo.

TO get a good setup you need cams, a good tune, and a decent turbo

Also you will loose AVCS, my theory is if you get a good low-midrange turbo, sr40 or 20 g you really don't have to worry to much about spool and with cams helping upper end torque you will have a torque curve that looks like this:

is that your car navarro? your profile says 04 sti.. anyway that graph looks pretty sweet.. isn't dpr suppose to have cams that will retain the acvs???

I think the ported heads have a lot to do with that long tq curve... maybe not as much as the cams but a lot.

Cams on the ej motors are not the same bolt-on thing as they are in the evo. I wouldnt waste the money on the cams untill you were at least running forged pistons on the bottom end.

someone asked me but i dont know the reply

on a vf39 will it make a power difference with cams at all?

mnavarro

Probably, but spend 1500 dollars on cams+ installation is kind of silly when you don't replace turbo with something that will be able to push more air up there.

im just tryin to push the vf39 to the limits

I hear ya, but the vf39 is already pretty close to its limits with a TBE and engine management. You will make more power but you may loose some of the torque you love down low, particularly if you loose AVCS. The DPR are custom grinding the stock cams? What are the drawbacks of doing this?

i dont know if they are or not? but they do work with the avcs..i was looking at stage 4 or 5

I remember seeing something about there cams. They say they are not adding material to the cams, just grinding some off, and this should be OK. What are the cost for these? I thought they were expensive.

well JUN's is an entire drivetrain kit for 1900..272 or 264
DPR's cams are like 1100 with AVCS...

$1095 for the AVCS versions.

The fact they preface it by "billet camshafts" would lead me to believe they are from
new stock, not regrinds.

Cams are hard to install, that's why guys don't do them and why after 4+ years we have no real data of power gains with cams even on WRXs.

Upgraded springs and retainers are about $300 for Crower stuff.

Wow, that seems like a great price. I'm calling them now and will see what they say! They are going to send me something on car that has them, a GT35R. I will post it up and some additional information.

i am going to be purchasing cams also so i will keep everyone informed

Ok, here's a quote from them, keep in mind this isn't an STI, but they may have something soon. This is cams (stage 3) plus port work. They are making good power though!

20 PSI 93 octane 382 to the wheels 360TQ
25 PSI 100 octane 472 wheel horsepower 444 TQ

Sorry for the poor comparison to your application, 2.5 STI Engine, ported WRX
non – AVCS heads.
In about 2 or so weeks I will have a dyno chart of a better comparison.

Also check back on our Subaru page within the next couple days. We have base
flow numbers on a STI head and WRX head. And early next week we will be adding a
stage 2.5 port on WRX heads and our Street phase port on STI heads.

These flow tests should answer a lot of questions we have gotten by many people
about cams, about STI heads supposedly flowing better than WRX heads, and about
oversized valves.
This is just one project we are working on at this current time.

If you could respond and let me know exactly what modifications your currently
have and what modifications you plan on doing and what kind of torque curve and
horsepower you would like to see, then I can better analyze what cams and
products we have to offer and we can incorporate that into the selection of cams,
porting, and valve train to accomplish your goals.

I believe Invisiguard is getting stage 2 cams for his built motor.
