i put a gp moto equal length header on my 05 STi, and now i have an oil leak. i think its from the black plug on the back of the head. kinda like a freeze plug ish. it has rtv around it, and theres a nick out of part of it. what can i do? im going to clean it and rtv the hell out of it, but if that does not work, how much of a pain is it going to be to fix that? :mad:

Hmmm. I had the heads off the motor when I replaced mine. RTV may hold it. Make sure its nice and clean and give it 24 hours to cure.

valve covers off Replace the half moon shapped plastic pieces. Do it right and be sure it wont leak again. I believe you can replace those, keeping your engine in the car.

You can get florescent dye to add to the oil that will show where the leak is coming from. Some race shops can do it. Some good mechanics do it.

Married - my wife's wanted to kill me while my car has been up on jack stands in pieces the last 3 weeks.

mine has been apart for months, hers-10 hours now. enough for me to catch hell. i can see where its coming from, i just want to be able to fix it today with ease.

Pull the valve cover off, pull the 1/2 moon piece out, clean it, RTV it, put it back in, put valve cover back on. You can do this with the motor in the car.

i really dont want to have to do that, but i guess i will.

the plastic rear dust shield for the timing belt is over a few of the bolts isn't it? so i would have to remove that to do it? and to do that would require removing the cam gears correct? do you think that the half circle being pushed in on the bottom a little bit will cause any clearance problems in the head?

I believe all the bolts are accessible with the cam gear dust shields on the car. A local guy to me took is car in to the dealership for the same reason and they had it fixed in a day.....definately not enough time in one day to pull the cam gears off and the valve cover, then put it all back together.

It's not going to cause any clearance issues...there is enough room between the 1/2 circles and cams that they won't touch.

i cleaned it real well with a non residual solvent, then rtv'd the crap out of it. from above it, filling in the entire half circle, and down to the bottom of the valve cover. if it can seal it, i got it sealed. if not i'm taking it to the subaru place to be done. those were kind of a pain when i had my engine out of the car, let alone in the car.

One day is plenty of time to pull the motor and completely disassemble and reassemble it.

t-minus four hours till startup....god i hope it doesn't leaak. i wanna drive it to HIN in charlottle this weekend.
