View Full Version : 6 speed swap problems please help
SUDN RSH 04-19-2005, 04:33 PM Ok so my 02 wrx has been broke down since late december due to tranny problems, I finally got my jdm speed last week. When I removed my stock tranny I found I had a problem, my stock Front cv shafts had the female side of the splines and my new 6 speed was also a female spline.
So now I need to find out what cv shafts I need to make this work I am hoping to avoid changing the hubs. I bought some 05 sti cv shafts hoping that they may work, they fit the tranny but they will not fit my stock hubs correctly the spline is shorter on the sti shafts than the stock wrx ones (there are a few other diffrences that are hard to explain if some one wants pics i will try and get them). I am not sure what else to do. It seems my only possibilliy is to chang the hubs, but aren't the 05 sti hubs a diffrent lug patern than the wrx? meaning i would have to run 2 diffrent bolt pattern wheels. would my 05 cv shafts work on the 04 hubs so I would have the right lug pattern? Also would I then have to use the brembo brakes? This has turned in to a much bigger project than I anticipated I really want my car back please help!
here are the numbers i got off the tranny if this helps 005153 E3-TY856WB1CA
Thanks,
Nathan
PHATsuby 04-19-2005, 04:42 PM pics will definitely help. I am sure someone else knows better than I do, but i was under the impression that the trannies with the male end splines sticking out(prior to the 05's), can also be pulled out, they are just clipped in with circlips. So, if the spline count is the same, you may be able to just pop in some stubs from either your wrx, or an 04 STi. Mine is an 04 USDM Sti tranny and has the stubs sticking out of the trans.
you are correct that if you have to get the 05 stuff you would need to change your hubs to 114x5.

projectrally 04-19-2005, 04:43 PM get 04 hubs and shafts. They're the same bolt pattern as your car. Not sure if the shafts for 04-05 are different, so you may be able to just get 04 hubs for your 05 shafts.
PHATsuby 04-19-2005, 04:47 PM you're tranny code is an 01-02 JDM tranny, so you should be able to pop in some splined stubs i think. not totally sure on that, where did you get it from, i think it was just bad luck that yours were pulled out for some reason.

xcntrk75 04-19-2005, 04:53 PM This is not a problem. You need 6-speed axle stub shafts which will allow you to use your existing (female) axles. The axle stubs insert into the diff carrier via circlip and have the male splines to mate to your existing drive-axle shafts.
I know this because I just encountered the same issue with my 2005 WRX transmission which Subaru decided to change the differential setup similar to that of the STI. Fortunately Dave at Kingpin helped me out with this information. I assume your tranny diff looks like THIS (http://66.49.172.173/subaru/swap/swapSPF/Image012.jpg) with the female carrier splines?
Here's the part numbers:
Axle stubs: 38415AA110
Circlips: 805329010

   Ben, you're always one step ahead of me... ;)
PHATsuby 04-19-2005, 04:58 PM Well, Anthony, I come through with the ideas, you come through with the exact info;)

Thats Exactly what Mine looks like I will order a set of those. Thanks soo much for the help!
PHATsuby- I bought my tranny from gruppe-S thanks for the help
Thank you everyone

Storm 04-19-2005, 11:01 PM Just to be clear....you punched out the rollpins before you removed the axles from the WRX trans right?
Jay Storm
PHATsuby 04-19-2005, 11:13 PM where does it say anything about removing axles? Both have to put axles onto their new trannies, and they don't have the normal male stubs coming from the tranny to slide their front axles onto. That is what they are talking about;)

The 6-speed and 05’ WRX 5-speed trannys use the stub axle shafts which are removable w/circlips. All years prior have the axle stubs as part of the differential which are secured by actual snap rings and are not removable without cracking the transmission and pulling the diff.
I guess if somebody pulled hard-enough (without removing the springpins) they could potentially pull the non-removable stubs out, but c’mon what are the odds…

Have you done this to your transmission yet and had no oil leaks ? The 05 gearboxes uses a different seal which the stub diameter is smaller. So, it will fit but will not seal. I ran into this on a 05 USDM Sti gearbox as well a late 04 JDM Sti V8.
xcntrk75 04-20-2005, 08:32 AM ^^^^^^
Yes I’ve already done this and yes I did run into this problem. I didn’t post about the seal issue because the author of this thread is already running an STI 6-speed and the “differential side oil retainers” (outer oil-seals) should already be properly sized for the 6-speed stub axles.
For my setup however, Ver.III is absolutely correct that the 05’ WRX uses a “step” on the new drive-shafts which calls for a larger outer seal. These seals need to be replaced with sti 6-speed ones in order fit the smaller inner diameter of the new 6-speed axle stubs.
I am presently leaking oil out both axle stubs and have these 6-speed seals on order. Right now the only thing holding oil in the diff is the inner oil seals and the baffle plate. Fortunately with the newer style transmissions the outer oil seal can be serviced without pulling the diff caps. So as soon as these arrive, I'm expecting them to solve this problem and will post results.
Just for reference, here’s a picture of the “step” on the 2005 WRX axle shafts with integrated axle-stubs which call for these larger outer seals:

Ver.III 04-20-2005, 02:34 PM Ok, cool. :) Just to let you know, the smaller seals do fit the newer gearboxes but normally the seals install from the inside of the side cap. The newer bigger seal installs from the outside so the caps are different. The earlier on has a step to prevent the seal from walking out and the newer one has a groove to keep it from moving, as well the step on the newer style shaft keeps it from walking out.
Confused yet ?
xcntrk75 04-20-2005, 03:12 PM Confused yet?
Yes...
Oh man that’s not good… So you’re saying the diff caps have to be pulled to install the smaller (internal diameter) seals? Even on a housing with diff-caps which are designed for external seal service?
Ver.III 04-20-2005, 03:16 PM The older seals do fit the newer side caps(install from the outside). I think it will work, but it won't surprise me if the seals leak or walk out. What do you have to lose ? I would try it before investing into the side caps.
xcntrk75 04-20-2005, 05:32 PM What do you have to lose?
No kidding.. what's the worst that can happen, it leaks?
Thanks for the info man...
SUDN RSH: You following this man? I hope you don't encounter this same issue, sounds like the JDM 6-speeds may be the same(?)
SUDN RSH 04-21-2005, 07:23 PM Yeah I am following I hope I don't have that problem either. I just got my stub axles today so I will pry try and install them tonight then all I have left is to get the driveshaft shortened. would have had that already done but I just finally installed my tranny last night all by myself what a PITA with no help.
Thanks again for all the help everyone I posted my problem on I-club and clubwrx and no one was much help there heck I think I may have more replys on this one topic here than I have tottal on those other boards (i don't post much either tho) it seems like a lot people bad mouth this board but this board defintly has the knowledge that none of the other boards seem to have.
Nathan
SUDN RSH 04-22-2005, 12:20 PM The seals look like they will be fine, but I just found out that I won't be able to shorten my driveshaft the local place here that does it just told me they couldn't do it
also the u joint on the tranny end of it is shot and they can't be replaced so i need a new shaft anyways, so an AUTO wrx drive shaft will work right? and does anyone know where I can find one at a good price? I need this ASAP.
Thanks,
Nathan
PHATsuby 04-22-2005, 04:15 PM auto wrx driveshaft will work, sorry dont know where to find one. call kingpin or someone else who imports parts.
