What I was going for was an install that gave no external cues of anything funny going on. Keeping it looking gross is part of the charm.

'91 Ej22 with 150k miles. Harness and ecu were from a '90, a $50 eBay score. Engine adapter from www.kennedyeng.com. The vw starter could barely turn the engine over, so a gear reduction starter was bought from kennedy also.

Kennedy 1800lb pressure plate and Gene Berg spring hub dual-friction disc wrap up the clutch.

Modified Berg 'traction bar' loads the drivetrain against the body to reduce the tendency of destuctive wheel hop. I shattered a cv joint before I installed it.

The exhaust is a conglomeration of a few different parts. What's visible is what is commonly referred to as a 'dual quiet pack'. It's a sort of popular exhaust system for VW owners who have installed a header. Electrical conduit tubing was used as exhaust piping (it was on sale at home depot). The stock ej manifolds were chopped up and oxyactylene welded back together, then connected to a modified vw header. Works pretty good, but it's sort of ugly under there.

Nissan pulsar radiator is laid flat over the hole where the gas tank used to be, and the gas tank is turned 180 degrees and welded to an angle iron braket, putting it up near the firewall. More conduit tubing runs the length of the car for coolant to flow through. Now I have to open the hood to put gas in it. :rolleyes:

Some cheap 17" dual-pattern wheels were gotten of of ebay for test fitting. That's what's on the back. To get them to fit up front requires narrowing the front beam and then running wheel spacers. A lot of work. I have the front beam narrowed already. Need to get my front rotors redrilled. Was originally going for modern porsche wheels, but I couldn't afford them.

I took it to Virginia Motorsports Park for test n tune day sometime during the summer last year. It literally had been running for a week. A lot of bugs, noticeably I was only getting about 3/4 throttle, and I couldn't launch it because of no drivetrain bracing (massive wheel hop). Also, a crappy homemade shifter made shifting quickly with accuracy impossible. I basically had to roll it slowly off of the line. It did a 15.1 at 88. Sucky, but I plan to do some more runs this summer. I think it will do low 14's easily. I was being paced by a friend in a del sol late one night, top speed seems to be 130ish (gear limited). Bugs shouldn't be driven that fast. It's effin' scary.

A couple more notes:

The oil pan is about 1/2 an inch thick. I armored it after putting a hole in the pan in the first half mile of the first drive. 14 inch wheels suck.

The transmission is stock, from a superbeetle. Mobil1 synthetic gear oil inside. One cv shaft doesn't have any boots on it.

This was my very first car. I've had it for 11 years now.

Sweet. I cant believe you welded on that gas tank :eek:. Did you cut out the trunk pan under the rad? Fans blow down or suck up? either way you should have a hood scoop of some kind. No trouble with air pockets..over heating?? How much hacking did you have to do to fit the engine?

The gas tank had been dry fr about 6 months. Still scary though. The spare tire well is cut out for air. The fans blow down. It's a pain in the ass to get all the air out of the cooling system, but I haven't had any problems since then.

Part of the rear apron had to be cut to fit the engine in there. The throttle body is really close to the firewall, and instead of flipping the intake around, I cut a hole in it with a sawzall.

I think if it ever hooked up, it might pick a tire off of the ground. Don't know. I decided that keeping a stock Ej22 was the best idea, the stock VW transmission can handle maybe 150 hp, I didn't want to have one custom built.

Custom built VW transmissions are cheap as hell though. Maybe I'll put a 50 shot on it.

I am stripping it down as we speake to repaint it and upgrade the engine components. This should be a 5 month project but it will be well worth it.
