View Full Version : No power after 5,000RPM, But lots of oil out the back!!!

Here is the deal with my car. Its a 99RS, just got it less then month ago. It was stock. (does not mean it was not modded at some point).

Mods that I added. Rallispec Intake, Random Cat, Prodrive Catback.

When I accelerate hard, when I get to 5,000 RPM I get almost complete loss of power. It alsmost seems like it does not get anough air... or maybe fuel. And almost feels like rev limiterer. It does go a little higher in RPM but very slowely and I did not push it at that point.

The thing is, when that happens (5K RPM and up) there is a lots of black smoke out of exhaust, whick seems to be oil. My white bumber has gotten very black now.

BUT, when I don't take the car to those RPMs, it runs fine, even under hard acceleration.

Any thoughts?

something doesn't seem to be burning right fuel/oil wise....

So far I have looked at PCV valve and cleaned. And I am going to replace fuel filter.

But whats with all the oil going through the exhaust?

you have a 99rs? with an intake? the 99's are equipped with a sensitive(pain in the butt) MAF sensor. They are known to run into over-lean conditions in the higher rpm's with aftermarket intakes, unless some sort of piggyback is used (i.e.S-AFC, etc) That drop in power is the knock-sensor pulling back timing to try saving your motor. I would recommend putting the factory intake plumbing back in, and use a K&N panel filter.

Really!? I used to have 01 RS fro 3 years, untill it crashed. So I took the Rallispec intake that I used for my 01 RS and put it into this car. I used the stock MAF section to the intake.

I don't have photographs but here is what it looks like:

yes it was designed to work with the '00 and '01 cars. the maf setup for '99 is difficult to deal with. on the other hand, if you still have the factory intake plumbing, i'd recommend using it for the time being. It does flow pretty well. Even with my heads/cams (TWE Stage II) i have no complaints running the factory intake. The 3 things I did to help was add the factory filter delete panel in the plenum box (big honkus attached to throttle body), a K&N panel filter, and removed the big intake mess inside the passenger fender.

Someone at my work had the same problem.

The fix was to have the EGR and/or the EGT sensor cleaned, I can't remember which it was, sorry... but it did fix the problem.

99's run lean with intakes.

FYI
black smoke = fuel
light blue = oil
white = water
I would say your running risk of ruining the Cat by driveing it that way, put the stock intake on for now, it really isn't that bad of a design and can be greatly improved with some simple mods.

LOL at the diagrams.

It could be a failing MAF sensor. Did it do the same thing with the stock intake set up?

Also dump that k&n filter and get a pipercross non oiled filter that orig came with the rallispec set up. Its expensive but it will be alot nicer to your maf sensor.

You know I did not really try pushing it to that high RPMs with stock intake. I pretty much put all my parts from my old car to this one as soon as I got it.

Jay, do you know where to get that pipercross filter, because I only got the tube from Rallispec, the rest I pieced together myself.

I guess I could try putting the stock intake and trying that.

thanks

www.truechoice.com carries Pipercross filters among other things. I have a pipercross cone from the Rallispec kit but it needs to be reglued to the venturi base. The P.O. seriously ghetto-rigged it. I've used them in the past on other cars with great results.....but they are not cheap.

wow, there is like 100s of parts for pipercross stuff, and all they have is part numbers and some dinky descriptions. Which one would be just a code filter for 3" pipe?

Fixed the problem by putting the stock intake system back on. Now it pulls well up until the redline. Stupid MAF!

Thank you.

Really.

For all of it. The art especially. And the smiley faced sun is a nice touch.
