View Full Version : Dyno'd today. What worked, what didn't.

Mustang Dyno at Taylors Imports, north of Charlotte in Mooresville.

283 peak wheel hp, 313 torque (not on the same pull) With those useless numbers out of the way....

The CryO2 did nothing. Maybe on a hot day, but in a shady, cool garage. Nada. Actually pulled a lower number. Might have been injesting the CO2 through the airfilter.

The QTP cutout showed 11 whp... so $200 = 11 hp. That's ok I guess.

I didn't do much tuning that helped. I lowered my gain and tried getting the boost to come in sooner. Got some longer, smoother power bands but I need to lok over my logs and decipher which goes with which graph. When I get home I'll scan in the dyno graphs and put them up with as much explanation as I can.

Later today, as fate would have it, another modded STi and a factory STi will get dyno'd. I'll give them a call this afternoon to get the stock STis numbers for that dyno. ( I hope I reads 50 whp!)

what were you running for boost?

Those numbers seem really low for your setup? What was your A/F?

Also on your website, you said the Fire Extinguisher saved you once. What happened?

Yeah the VF39 and a turboback with a good Ecutek dyno tune puts out over 300.

19 psi. around 11.3 afrs below 4000, 11.0 around 5k, 10.8 by 6500.

Fire = oil cooler line disconnected. No long installed.

Numbers are low so I'm hoping the stock STi shows up today and runs something proportionately dissapointing to make me feel better.

The guy running the show calculated just over 400 at the flywheel. Don't know how he figured that though.

Like others have said,,for what you have ,that is some low numbers.FWIW make sure they put the right STi #s into the dyno,,or your numbers are borked big time,,,,dont ask me how i know ;)

Yea, but he is waiting to see what a stock STi does on this dyno...if a stock STi makes 200whp, then he has made some pretty good gains. If it makes 240whp, well then is't time to start diagnosing some stuff.

For a Mustang dyno, those numbers aren't bad, but I would expect a bit more out of a car with his mods.

On the local Mustang dyno, a stock STi will put down ~225hp and tq, which is *completely* normal considering a ~70hp drivetrain loss.

The #'s aren't too bad, not great either...i guess we have to keep in mind that the owners tuning it...not to slight him, but just that if a PRO was doin it, the figures maybe a little higher.

Also alot depends on the dyno, some Mustang units run stock STis @ 210-215 WHP :(

I guess lookin at the fact the car has trapped 109mph, that shows its makin good power.

Nice setup, but that vf22 needs to go...... ;)

Yeah. The 22 was an uneducated purchase. I was under the impression that an 1820 would be as hard as I wanted to push, and the 22 was what deadbolt considered an equivalent (the way they build them). I'm not even sure what the exhaust side is... if it's what comes on the 22 or something else.

I'd go green or Zilla 49 if I did it again.

I need to run the car out to boxer4racing or up to TurboXS some day. I'm happy that I could get the map to run as smoothly and as safely as I have, but some tweaks by someone "in the know" would probably help a lot. Mr. Taylor was impressed with the smoothness of the graphs. I might get some posted up tonight.

Don't take those numers to seriously. From what i have heard about the dyno you went to is that, it's not getting set up right for AWD cars. A local 3000VR4 put down 600 AWHP on another dyno and only around 325 AWHP at taylor's dyno. The 2WD cars are right on the money....but AWD are way off. I put down 200 AWHP, but then ran 108mph in the 1/4....does that sound a bit off to you also?? lol

Stock STi numbers just came in. One of the guys that works there and auto-x's in some of the same events as I gave me a call.

211 hp and 223 tq.

On your deadbolt vf22 did you get the wheel upgrade or is it just ported and polished?

Your #s look pretty solid now that we know what a stock STi makes on that dyno... +72 whp and +90 wtq

In comparison, if you would have dynoed on a dyno which a stock STi puts out 240 whp and 240 wtq (avg dyno imo) you would be making around 320whp and around 337wtq. Pretty good for a VF22 clone imo...

My calculations (derived by drivetrain loss) show the guy that told you that you were making just over 400 at the crank is right on target. My calculations show you making ~402 crank hp (again derived from drivetrain loss for the stock STi).

yea at first i was gonna say thats some pretty low numbers but after silversurfer converted it, it doesnt look so bad.

mustang dynos are known as "the heartbreakers" to the SVT guys. That is to the dyno-queens. Take it to the track and see what you run, those seem like pretty good #s for a mustang.

I agree. Track #s usually can verify the legitimacy of your dyno #s.

thats not bad...we did 220-230whp stock on the mustang, and did 278-292whp and just over 300 torque depending on what we tuned (turboback, i/c etc) with 1.4 bar on the vf39....

i think we did 292 with our i/c, greddy evo2, downpipe, kn intake, fuel pump, and utec with our tune.

And I am still waiting for more info on your I/C Chad. If you are lacking some more perspective test candidates I am not that far and would be glad to drive over for some testing with my Hydra.

I have done a fue pools there also. My sti put down 258whp, and 300wtq
My mods are
Utec
Gp Moto header
Perrin short ram
txs tbe (no cats)
I am pushing 20psi and my Afr's stay around 10.8. Dale at boxer4 racing did my tune on the utec. That was before the header. I would like to go back and get a little more out of it. Dale is a great tuner. Safe tune's with good #'s
I went to the 1/8th mile and me track time
was as follows
60ft=1.64
1/8th=7.91
trap was 88.3mph

Couple of questions about my turbo. I really have no idea what it is. I got it through Dale at boxer4 and he got it from Deadbolt. I told him that I wanted a PE1820 and he said deadbolt could make the equivalent. So Deabolt sent me something. Dale kept thinking it'd be a 20G. I don't know what a 20g looks like or consists of.

It has VF22 stamped on it.

That's all I know. It could be a bone stock VF22 that deadbolt made a killing on, but I'd doubt that. The impellers look waaaaay cooler than the ones on the stock 39. Not evenly spaced vanes, but staggered ones on the input side. I'm thinking it might be a Kong II. But I need to drive to asheville and let a deadbolt employee take a good look at it.

interpret away. My scanner made some funky pictures out of some of the graphs. Too tired to do it over again so here are some of them.

i have an oil coller mounted under the hoodscoop. A line came unclamped. Oil
+ hot exhaust turned into combustion. I had to use the extingusher to put out an oil fire.

And replace the word "long" with "longer"

After blowing 4 quarts of redline onto I-40 in about 15 seconds, and a couple of hours for a tow to a place where I could clean the engine bay and replace the oil, I went home, removed the cooler, changed back to synthetic and a new filter, and haven't though twice about it.

On a good note. I ran dino oil through my motor for about 100 miles, then went right back to synthetic. After 30 k miles, that made my engine oil stay soooo clean for sooo long (still light brown at 3000 miles, just changed it 2 days ago.) I think every 10k I'll run regular oil through my system for a short period of time, then change the filter and put the good stuff back in.

Good Lord! That wing! Is it me, or is it taller than stock??

2phless

Taller. But it only adds HP when the car is in motion so the dyno didn't pick that up.

Rofl...

Also, your turbo if it came from deadbolt being an 1820 clone is probably a Kong2. I think they use a VF22 to make it.

http://www.boostplanet.com/product3.htm

Scroll 1/3 way down for Kong2. Seems like a solid turbo to me, I almost went with one before deciding on the 20g.

{edit}

Found this...

Brand new IHI VF22 turbo with upgraded 630CFM compressor wheel. Compressor wheel is the exact same as used in the PE1818 and PE1820. This turbo is the same as the PE1820 in parts make up. You are getting a brand new VF22 in the IHI box with the upgraded compressor.

From an old Kingpin thread. So that is what makes up a 1820... the VF22 with an upgraded compressor wheel.

2phless - did you have any fitment issues with the Borla Hush? I wouldn't expect to see it sitting that low (looks like you can see the entire can, when I'd think only the tips would be visible). TIA for any help, as I'm about to install one on my STi.
