View Full Version : It's Here! 1.8 to 2.2 Swap Info Needed!
wildfire 04-22-2005, 10:14 AM I Got in my Ej22 today ;=]. 265 dollors 87K 200PSI compression ;=].
I'm dumping my 1.8 & installing the 2.2. I have read all the 2.5 swap stuff but I can't find a 2.2 NA from a 1.8 . Can any tell me if there is anything I should know about this swap? I'm going to asume that they are pretty my the same setup. I haven't been able to find anything saying they have diffrent wireing  at all. Can someone educate me if I'm wrong???
kheff46 04-22-2005, 10:27 AM should be direct swap, as long as engine is same year or newer(for emissions). may be able to run with 1.8 ecm even, not sure!
anyone else?
scoobyimprza 04-22-2005, 11:16 AM Should be able to run with the 1.8 ECU. Just use your 1.8 intake manifold.
Back in the day when I had my EJ18 turbo and the first engine blew, I bought another long block for $80.
Have fun!
wildfire 04-22-2005, 10:46 PM Thanks guys! The intakes are diffrent  , so I'm going to swap to the 1.8. I asked if the timming belt cover was cracked & they said no, but guess what? YUP it is  !Top left corner! Can I leave it  ? I'll get A new one when I change the belt I'll make a Write Up on this so everyone can have a walkthrough on this swap. Should make for a good cheap swap! Anyone know if I should swap Injectors?
subachad 04-22-2005, 11:45 PM I did the same thing. If you want some more power, use the 1.8 heads. It will give you about an 11:1 compression ratio. You will need to run premium though.
Simply use the heads and block from the 2.2, and put the intake manifold from the 1.8 on it. That keeps you from having to do any wiring at all.
For the timing belt covers, get them from www.1stsubaruparts.com. The site is lacking, but if you call the prices can't be beat.

95_Impreza 04-25-2005, 01:32 PM Not to hijack or anything but I am considering a motor swap like him. only difference is the 2.2 to the 2.5 I also wanted to know if wiring is going to change or if I can just swap my heads and intake manifold on as well.
Lemme know thanks
/end hijack
EcksJay 04-25-2005, 03:11 PM 95_Impreza, do you mean you have a 1.8 and you want to swap in a 2.5? Well, there are plenty of threads that will help with that. If you have a 2.2 and want a 2.5, I don't think that I can help you there. But, there are lots of knowledgeable people in this forum.

Scoobie Steve 04-25-2005, 04:57 PM The 1.8l ecu doesnt like running a 2.2l engine. Expect some minor drivability issues.

would you need some form of EM if this is done?
Impretzle 04-25-2005, 08:25 PM Hey all. I too am cursed with the 1.8, and I plan on doing the 2.2 swap some time soon. So lets see some pics and updates!!!
BTW, the 1.8 sucks. I think some cars coast faster. Even downhill it's slow.

its not the engine, it's the driver. :alien:
Impretzle 04-26-2005, 12:26 AM Yes. The 1.8 actually does make you faster and a better driver. It does this by mentally conditioning you to never slow down for any turn, because you'll lose all your momentum.
Even so everyone always asks if my car is a WRX, or what kind of turbo i have.. lol
So like you say it's all driver!
Homemade WRX 04-26-2005, 04:15 AM I don't think getting a EJ22 in place of a EJ18 is worth the hassle...just jump to the EJ25 for a few hundred more...and both will need a SAFC to control fuel and air anyhow...the only EJ22 worth doing IMO is the legacy turbo...but that's a whole other story
but I opted for the WRX engine swap
wildfire 04-26-2005, 10:09 AM ( Haveing trouble Posting! Says I have to many URLs in the post??So I'm fragmenting my post)
Okay, Lets start with the intake.
I will give you a intake comparison when I have the two off w/ side by side & any shots I can make to compare the two. I should have a few shots up tonight. The cherry picker is going to be here in a day so I want to have the 1.8 all ready to be pulled.
Heads: Do I need to buy new gaskets for the head swap? or if they are in good shape can I leave them?
Got all my tune up stuff ready plugs, oil, ect.
wildfire 04-26-2005, 10:10 AM Now as for the reason on why to do a 2.2 rather than the 2.5. Let so it really started out because of the almighty dollar. A 2.5 used $1000 was the best I could find. & a 2.2 was going for $265. & this is a few lines from the FAQ
wildfire 04-26-2005, 10:11 AM EJ25 DOHC Phase I: Found in Legacies from 1996-1999, Imprezas in 1998, and Foresters in 1998. Rated at either 155hp and 140 ft-lbs in 1996 or 165hp and 162 ft-lbs in 1997-1999.
EJ25 SOHC Phase II: Found in Legacies from 2000+, Imprezas from 1999+, and Foresters from 1999+. Rated at 165hp and 166 ft-lbs. There was a slight compression ratio change from 1999-2000 where it went from 9.7:1 to 10.0:1.
2.2 spec well for the extra 700 dollars I saved buying the hardy 2.2 block I figure I should be able to build a home made turbo kit for less than $700. But then I was informed about the heads swap. Say boosting compression from 9.5:1 to 11:1 ( "PP" port & polished 1.8 heads) with "pp" intake manifold to boot & with ignition, have the whole thing Dyno tuned. I should see "around" 150Hp & at leased 150 TQ. Just a hunch so that’s why we are going to see what we can get out of this cheap swap before the turbo goes on. & for some the extra 8 HP may not be worth the $1000 for a daily driver. Some just need it to run good to drive tell they can afford the good stuff to put under the hood :)
Okay what do we think about this? A little wishful thinking on power people?
Swap starts tonight!

wildfire 04-27-2005, 10:08 AM Got the Intake manifold off the 2.2, The plugs check out good. Should go nice & easy;=] the engine lift will be here today. ;=] Then I'll shoot some pics on the intake manifold & heads.
subachad 04-27-2005, 01:13 PM Hang on to those 2.2 heads, you can clean up the ports a bit, have the cams reground by delta cams, have them rebuilt, get some headgaskets from 1stsubaruparts.com and bolt them on to your 1.8 block. Now add some 370cc Legacy turbo injectors and an e-manage to control fuel and you have an engine good for a little over 200hp. All for less than $400.
Add the turbo kit you have been building up in the mean time as well once you get the new low compression engine installed and running.
This is pretty much what I have done except I used a closed ej20G block. Thing is, I might have been better off taking the 2.2L engine and installing the ej22 turbo pistons and to drop the CR. Either way would have been less than $400. I think I'm in my hybred about $300 with all the gaskets, seals, reground Delta Cams, head rebuild, etc...
