I have a 97 Impreza L with the old style dash/cluster area (98 and up changed).

I'm looking for an OEM electronic gauge cluster, preferably one with a very high tach meter.

Any suggestions? How about a JDM STi Ver3 cluster?

Yes, a JDM cluster is your best bet. On the Ver4-6 cluster, it is designed like the RS cluster, but the tach is in the center instead of the speedo. With a 97, the Ver 4 might be the easiest to wire up.

The whole point of this exercise is so that I don't have to hack anything up. I just want to be able to fit the cluster into its resting area, do the wiring and ta da.

So the cluster I'm looking for has to BOTH...
a) slide into my existing 97 cluster opening
AND
b) be electronic

The Ver5 and Ver6 clusters won't fit my dash without modification to either my dash or the cluster.

The Ver4 may or may not fit and may or may be electronic... anyone know?

I'm thinking Ver3 at the latest because I've seen an MY1997 STi Ver3 and he has the old style dash. A Ver4 would be a 98 and that's probably the newer dash.

You are right, it would have to be the old style. My bad. The Ver 3 might be the easiest then. It might be plug and play, but I doubt it.
