View Full Version : I just looked to see when the last time I changed my oil was- 12k miles ago. svek 04-22-2005, 11:34 PM so yah last time i changed it was 47,800 and im at 60,000 right now. thats probably not good...how much damage do you think i caused? :( WRC-Go 04-22-2005, 11:38 PM Just change it. If you've got synthetic in there you're probably OK, if not, you're probably going to be sorry. svek 04-22-2005, 11:41 PM its regular castrol oil :( zavigm 04-23-2005, 12:43 AM You'll probably be ok if the level isn't too low. Uncle Scotty 04-23-2005, 01:04 AM ....just change it and make sure you keep an eye on it from now on.....damn it...;) svek 04-23-2005, 03:30 AM i changed it out. it was very black. i didnt check the levels before i changed it out. i didnt notice the car running weird or anything. i dunno seems like its fine... Hayes 04-23-2005, 08:02 AM Might want to consider the next change at 4 or 5,000 miles to clean it up some. In fact my normal oil/filter change is 5-6,000 miles. poison 04-23-2005, 04:11 PM Might use a diesel oil for one oci to aid cleaning a hair, like Delo or Delvac, as long as temps aren't low. Gas mileage might suck... Orson 04-23-2005, 05:28 PM Modern oils last a long, long time. I would worry more about whether the oil level was low than how old it is. OneOBS 04-23-2005, 05:32 PM You're probably fine, but...when's the last time the air filter was changed? :) svek 04-24-2005, 04:03 AM You're probably fine, but...when's the last time the air filter was changed? :) oh i change the filter everytime i change the oil. (when i remember) AndyH 04-24-2005, 10:26 AM oh i change the filter everytime i change the oil. (when i remember) You change the air filter at every oil change? That to me seems a bit excessive, but hey, it's your money. :D svek 04-24-2005, 07:45 PM You change the air filter at every oil change? That to me seems a bit excessive, but hey, it's your money. :D lol i thought you were supposed to do that. oh well. AndyH 04-24-2005, 09:20 PM It won't hurt to change the air filter when you change the oil, but like I said it's kind of overkill. I *think* Subaru wants you to change it every 15,000 miles (going from memory). Check your owner's manual for the proper change interval. zavigm 04-24-2005, 10:37 PM ^ that's about how long he goes between oil changes too. I think every 3000 miles would be a bit excessive, but 10-15k wouldn't be unheard of if it's been particularly dusty. svek 04-25-2005, 02:40 AM ^ that's about how long he goes between oil changes too. I think every 3000 miles would be a bit excessive, but 10-15k wouldn't be unheard of if it's been particularly dusty. i dont make it a habit to change it every 12000, i just havent been paying attention for the past...year. Backsteer 04-25-2005, 06:59 AM You should send some of it off to be tested :) *I* would change it again very soon. The new oil likely doesn't look much better than the old (You never get it all out) and that little bit of blackness mixed with your new oil. Or do what poison said. or both. vile 04-25-2005, 11:03 AM an oil analysis would be interesting here vvk 04-25-2005, 03:11 PM According to official Subaru maintenance schedule, air filter should be replaced every 30 months or 30k miles. Maintenance schedules on Subaru.com (http://www.subaru.com/owners/schedules/index.jsp) White out 04-27-2005, 08:03 AM oh i change the filter everytime i change the oil. (when i remember) It might be benifical to you to get a K&N air filter. For how often you change (or don't) your oil. You won't have to worry about your air filter not doing it's job. Nick svek 04-27-2005, 07:07 PM It might be benifical to you to get a K&N air filter. For how often you change (or don't) your oil. You won't have to worry about your air filter not doing it's job. Nick i have a K&N panel filter. but dont those let more air in but filter worse? AndyH 04-28-2005, 10:41 AM i have a K&N panel filter. but dont those let more air in but filter worse? Based on several air filter tests I've seen online, the K&N filter lets in a lot more dirt when compared to an OEM paper filter. ImprezaVA 04-28-2005, 11:17 AM Castrol GTX is a great dino oil. However, I'm sure during this 12,000 mile escapade some residue built up on your seals (cam, crank, etc.) If I did something like that, I would: -Change oil and filter -Run 2,000 miles -Change oil & filter -Now stay with 3,000 mile interval for the dino. I'd rather not wait more than 6,000 miles to change my oil, synthetic or dino, just because I like to check everything out. I find that one can get busy and neglect to rotate tires, check brake fluid, etc. when allowed longer drain intervals. Of course, this is a general statement, but pertains to me and how I feel about it. -Charles- Jejunum 04-28-2005, 11:18 AM Modern oils last a long, long time. I would worry more about whether the oil level was low than how old it is. yes but filters dont (in terms of filter capacity.) |
