my windshield cracked ('02 subaru legacy wagon se). i've had stone hits on other cars before, but this one's weird:

the crack started along both sides of the rearview mirror, runs vertically, and while i can feel the crack from the inside, i can't feel anything (yet) on the outer surface. and there's no sign of even a small pit anywhere. and the weather certainly hasn't been extreme.

it definitely looks like a defective windshield.

i got the car used, about a year ago, and i suspect the windshield had been replaced at some point (it looks like oem, with the silkscreens at the edges and around the mirror, but the gasket didn't look like factory work). no leaks or problems, until now.

has anybody ever had anything like this?

Yep, unless you are shooting a BB gun inside your car or hanging 20lb weights from the rear view mirror, the crack on the inside layer of the glass but no crack on the outside layer sure sounds like defective windshield and/or installation. Looks like you'll be getting to know the world of windshield replacement up close and personal. :(

I have had someone crack their windshield by adjusting the rear view with a bit too much enthusiasm. Perhaps when the winshield was previously replaced the installer tried to manuever the rear view a little too much and created a weak spot which eventually cracked. Good Luck man...

That's what comprehensive insurance coverage with zero-deductible glass coverage is for. I hope you have some. If you don't, you might want to consider getting some. It's pretty cheap ($30/year in NY? I'd have to find my policy).
