View Full Version : After 50k and alot of memories better than sex, the Porsche sold today......
RaceComp Engineering 04-23-2005, 11:01 PM After 9 years, 150 track events, many offs, many passes people still talk about and alot of money, I watched as the tow truck took my baby away today at 6:43 pm. It was emotional and difficult but it was time. I am working on projects for my Subaru racecar and there was'nt time for the Porsche.
I have come under the bridge at Summit point in the rain and at 120 mph and done 2 360's and still turned in for turn 10, and never lost a postition during a NASA race in 2001. I have lost brakes in turn 1 from 155 and lived. I have many memories that tell a tale of a driver who went from a 1:38 lap time to a low 1:20 raneg with a car that NO-ONE thought would ever be fast, btu it was and it did it with very regular parts,..unlike the Doctors and Dentist and DOTCOM kids with their trailors and rigs and crews and tons of equipment. I drove to a race placed second and drove home once , while passing the trailors of 3rd and 4th on the way home. LOFL.
It started as a daily driver when I was a service writer for Hyundai in Collge Park. I spent all my money on that car and went on dates with 600lb spring rates and race seats sometimes. AC never worked,as I removed it early on9 85 lb savings). Mark at Color Crafters painted it for materials (200.00)when I was working at Passport BMW( it was a 3500.00 paint job). We then stripped the interior and removed another 400 lbs and it was a beast . With 350whp and 2500 lbs, it would (with the tall gears) run next to a R1 Yamaha from 70mph to 175 !! Soon after the short gears were reality and lap times dropped by a full second and a half. All while still having tags and working signals. No headlights and no heat, and no side windows made for early spring mornings and the cops on Rt 340 really looking hard. lol.
The good news is my good friend is buying it and he has the same plans I had so he will dump another 20k into it to get a 1:18 lap time range from it. So I will get first dibs to buy it back in a couple of years.
Direction of car?...15 inch GT3 brakes, fuel cell, remove 250 more lbs, add 50 more HP, MAx Crawford wing, etc.
The guy buying it is a fast , fast guy and I get to drive it in an enduro soon, so Its like giving up youyr ex girlfriend , but you get to sleep with her on occasion...LOL.
WellI figured I would share this with some of you who know me. I am sad tonight and will drink 2 Spaten Optimators for ole time sake. Then I will go down in the garage and sit in the STi for a rebound session and play some ole Steely Dan and SNoop Dog remizes. LOFL.
Signed,......................

Prob an enduro somewhere else. I gave it up without knowing how good the new Kelly Moss race motor runs. I had always wanted one and I got it, but it was too late in the season a couple of years back. The good thing is, his shop is next to ours at the track so I can stop in and give her some cam 2 here and there.

The STi is great and all, but sitting low in a actual sports car is a different feeling. When you get on the brakes at 154 mph that thing really STOPS !! Its like you dropped Love Boar anchors in a canoe !! Its a whole different feeling and thats what I will miss. Maybe if I hit the lottery I could get my own GT3 cup car........( yeah right)

Capt Crunch 04-24-2005, 12:25 PM "A Real Good Feeling"
By Ben Dussault (back in high school)
When Myles Kenneth Williams was eight, he and his older brother would perform various self-proclaimed “acts of stupidity” one of which involved jumping over their mother’s car on a bike. Everyone, friends and neighbors, sans parents, was there to watch as Myles, in his cheap Western Flyer bicycle complete with banana seat flew down a hill, up a three-foot tall ramp, and was thrown into the air -- over his mother’s 75’ sky blue Nissan 280z. “Yeah!” he screamed, “Yeaaaaahh!” That started everything.
On Myles’ fourth birthday his mother asked him what he wanted to be when he grew up. When Myles replied that he wanted to become a racecar driver, his mother retorted: “No, what do you really want to be?” It was the early seventies and Myles was black, there weren’t any black racecar drivers. It just didn’t happen: Myles took his mother’s word for it.
Myles still followed his passion for cars; his first car was a Nissan 77’ 280z. At age 15 showing off to his girlfriend, “who was 21 at the time” Myles proudly pointed out, he sped up through a corner and bumped, just lightly tapped he insists, another car. He ended up going to court, which resulted in his parents forbidding him drive until he was 19. But that didn’t stop him. Myles’ parents went to Germany, and taking advantage of the obvious opportunity, he took one of the cars out for a spin, in this case, his fathers old but massively powerful Mercedes. Myles leaned forward and put his elbows on his knees to tell me his tale of mischief.
“There was a oak tree in front of the house, and one night when it was damp out, with wet leaves I did burnout after freakin’ burnout. I probably did thirty or forty burnouts. That thing would sit there and go through first and second gear… it would almost get to third gear before it would start moving. It would shift and still be moving in the same spot.”
It took me a second to digest what this meant. The car only had three gears, and second gear topped out at about 90 mph. So the wheels were spinning at 90 mph when they caught, “When it hooked up it was like a catapult.” Damn.
“So I was flying around, doing crazy stupid ****, you know, and then I see four cop cars.”
Myles immediately whips the car around and drives back to his house as fast as he can, powerslides into the driveway, runs inside and closes the curtains: peeking around them too see the police, while pretending to watch TV.
“For that nine minutes, I knew I was going to jail. I knew I was gonna be in [there] for at least a week.”
It turns out that the cops weren’t after Myles, but it scared him enough that he never took his dad’s car out for a joyride again. In fact the next day he took the car outside and waxed it, shined it all up and put gas back in the car. The trip reset on the car was 29 miles, so Myles reset the dial to zero and drove around the neighborhood for exactly 29 miles, hoping, praying that his father didn’t remember the total trip odometer. After recounting the entire story, Myles leaned back, seeming to reenact the relief he must have had. The neighbors never told, and Dad never found out.
Continuing with his trend of high performance cars, Myles received a 1967 Cutlass Coupe from his grandfather with the W30 package, which translates into massive horsepower. Myles rattled off the specs and his various modifications. Two-speed glide-matic shifter, thirteen second quarter mile, wide eight-inch wheels with a nice muffler and a big house speaker in the back. Myles put his hand on an imaginary steering wheel and bobbed to the beat of his imaginary subwoofer. He was especially proud of this car:
“I just kept it baby clean. Everywhere I went, either old person or young person, or a girl or a guy, it didn’t matter, someone had something good to say about my car.”
In ’87 Myles moved on and got a silver GTI, a departure from the large powerful car to a smaller yet sporty one. Myles took Sandy, the dealer, out on a little test drive: “I went down this back road in Hunt Valley and she swore she would never ride with another customer again. I got this car off the ground.” Myles fell in love with the car. It was built solidly, and he would take back roads simply for the pleasure of driving.
One fateful day Myles was driving spiritedly, later defined as exceeding the speed limit, on a back road, and came to a hairpin turn. He estimates that the turn was about 290 degrees. It had just started to rain, but he didn’t expect traction to be a problem. What happened next is best said in his own words:
“I hit the brakes and I turned. Well the car slows down a teeny bit, and when I turn, it turns, but the back,” Myles interjects, “because I’m still on the brakes, the tail starts coming out. The instinctive thing to do was to turn and the tail comes around. So I counter steer, but the front is gonna hit the guardrail. So I counter steer again. I’m only a third of the way through the turn, and I do left turn, full lock (all the way over), counter steer full lock. I did that like four more times. This corner felt like it took five minutes. I was just so scared of wrapping my car [around a tree]. When it was all over I actually pulled over and sat there. My heart was just like:” Myles thumped his hand on his chest for emphasis. “I drove slow all the way home.”
It was summer of ’93 when his good friend, who was a technician on an Indy car, invited Myles to the Indy Race. When he got there Myles went past the service merchandise pit looking for his friend when he saw Willy T. Ribb take off his helmet.
He was black. Myles stopped in his tracks and had a flash back to his mother. “No, what do you really want to do?” Race! Why the hell couldn’t he race? Willy was, he could too. Myles thought about his life: everything revolved around racing. His obsession with each of his cars, he was an autocross enthusiast, he even had an automotive parts business, why was he hiding behind all of it? “I did not think it was ****ing possible,” he said. Not possible then, but this changed all that.
What ensued was a complete change of Myles Williams’ life. When he went home he taped racing seasons ’94, ’95, and ’96, dropped his girlfriend who didn’t like his racing, and liquidated his auto parts business. He charged full ahead into the world of racing that was now fully open to him. It was there the whole time, he just never noticed.
Myles now races a Porsche 944 turbo at NASA races in Pro Sedan 5, the fastest sedan league. On the straight-aways he can reach 152 mph and takes corners at 90 mph. In his garage, Myles has a picture of his car lifting the front outside wheel as he exits a turn: he’s going that fast. To him, driving is like getting in a concert. Everyone is packed together trying to get to the door, the finish line. As soon as you push up further, someone is right behind you, pushing you.
His best accomplishment was second at a NASA event in June of ‘01. When he was driving home he passed the 3rd, 4th, and 5th placed drivers, fully sponsored, complete with 18-wheeler trailers and a tech crew to match. When you beat these guys, you know you’re good.
“It was a real good feeling…a real good feeling.”

Ed: I'm not sure if the best accomplishment is actually the best accomplishment. Myles can correct me if needed. This is a paper I wrote for my journalism class senior year of HS. I posted on the boards asking for a race car driver who would like to be interviewed and Myles stepped up to the plate. I met him for the first time at the interview, and I think he's one of the guys that deserves all the good things coming to him.
Zoinks 04-24-2005, 01:44 PM Awesome writing Crunch. That was a great story.
Myles, I can def. relate to having an attachment like that to a car you've had a lot of important memories in. But hey, the only constant in life is change, right?

Apex Rex 04-24-2005, 04:40 PM Myles, I know the difference in being in a Porsche and a Subaru. My dad lets me take out his 996 C2 every once in awhile, and it is a completely different feeling.
Driving a Subaru and a Porsche have different feelings with out a doubt, neither of which is worse than the other, they are just different.
Some day I'll meet you out on the track :D
Best wishes,
~Apex

I do have a shot of it lifting the inside wheel about an inch in turn 7, which can only be done in that car from full throttle commitment..........which is alot of power to get to the ground.

I feel for you and your car..it's a bond that few people can truely understand, even if they feel it themselves.
It looks like an awesome car, I can only imagine how it drove.
And the story was awe-inspiring, because as a young person (18), I have the same goals you once did..I dream to become a race car driver. Although I face a different opposition (not race based, but money), the story give me hope :).
Do you have any videos of it, or other pictures? It looks amazing.

You write at a very accomplished level. Good enough to make a crappy living writing professionally :)
MattSTi 04-25-2005, 02:16 AM It must be hard to part with a car like that. However, it sounds like you've got a lot to look forward to with your new project!
I have to say, I'm really impressed with guys like you who drive cars to the track and RACE them. It's one thing to be doing HPDE's, yet another to race. I remember setting up shop in the paddock at SPR next to a guy with a red GSX eclipse that was completely stripped and looked like it had seen A LOT of track time. I asked him if it was his "weekend warrior", but it turns out it was his daily driver. Driving a car to and from races is even more inspiring.

Our philosophy was never power. It was always handling and brakes, and getting a ton of track time. Driving in the rain on Slicks and going where the rich guys DONT GO !! Most of the high power 944 turbo s that we saw come to Summit Point and Watkins Glen, either broke, or the driver was weak. There is a book on the market called...." Fast guys, Rich guys, and Idiots, which are you?.." That was something I use to leave on my dash after a good day at the track. We arent and were'nt rich guys, and we are not idiots either.........lol
Other than Kelly Moss and Jon Milledge, most of the vendors are power players, and thats whats funny, as thats not what makes a 944 turbo fast.

RaceComp Engineering 04-14-2006, 12:38 AM Now building this for IMSA Historic racing. Perhaps a 968 RS kit. Target weight 2200, with Jon Milledge motor, Motec, Moton 3 ways,..blah,blah, blah...target lap at Summit will be a 1.17. But since the new owner is getting a new GT3 street car the project has slooooooooowed down. So that leaves time for detail work, which will be good.

It doens't have to be SCCA legal. Also, he could build it to PCA specs, and still run it in SCCA.
Also, doesn't Historic race cars, have to have History in the series its run? Or can you just build a car that meets the requirements?

RaceComp Engineering 04-15-2006, 05:12 PM Ya know we were all standing around today after a 40 mile bike ride and the one guy said as he looked at his STI..." why cant these cars come with brake "feel" like the Porsche's...".
And it made me think of how good the brakes were on this car. Being able to brake like that lap after lap with pedal feel we NEVER get in Japanese cars, has to be SWEET.
I think thats the apeal also, is the turn in, braking and GRIP. Wide track and 13inch slicks and some serious rear aero grip makes for some serious cornering speeds.
Ok, let me calm down.

SubaruCO 04-15-2006, 06:34 PM Well, rest assured that even though you sold the 944, it has inspired others...like me! I have been building for the past year a silhouette 944 that contains within the suspension of a C5 vette and a 400 hp LS1. Target weight is 2300 lbs. And it was your inspiration that started me, so thanks!

Miles, I don't this it's that it can't it's just that no one is building the aftermarket parts to make it happen. this is where you come in...:disco:

HAHAHA! Man, I wonder if you remember that phone conversation! I called you and asked what it would take to make a good track worthy 944. I was kinda frustrated after the convo because it seemed like the availability and costs were just prohibitive. So I started thinking outside the box and put together a design and parts list for the Corvette transplant. Well I'm well on my way to finishing it within the next year.
Also, I can't wait to drive the thing on the track! Methinks, though, that I may have built too much car for my current abilities!!1! Fabricating skills > driving skills.
P.S. - Engine is getting finished this week and I aught to have the dyno plot in my hands shortly. My specs for the engine were "the most flexible, drivable and durable V-8 on the planet" Yah! Actually I really just wanted a durable engine that made about 350-400 ft./lbs from 2000-6500 RPM.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW..thats going to require some incredible dampers to get that down.............. ;)

that is great to hear. you need to increase your staff because at your current capacity you can't give us enough new stuff to purchase/drool over

That's the biggest unknown in the equation. The powertrain is well figured. Heck, I even put the cage/tubeframe through some basic FEA...BUT although I could throw some high-dollar dampers at it (I probably won't at first, just some circle track stuff) I still would have no idea how to tune them to get the most out of it. I hope I can take a look at some of the SCCA WC Corvettes and see what setup they are using, but in the end it'll probably just be a learning experience consisting of trial and error. Well, that and lots and lots of rear tires! >=]
RaceComp Engineering 08-20-2006, 01:36 AM Recent turn of events.
My buddy who I sold the car to, is getting a GT3 street car in 6 weeks, 4 dys and 9 hours. ( who is counting)....so this project was CANNED recently. This means the Kelly Moss ported and flowed cylinder head,..is available. This means the 1989 Turbo-S block with 23k on it,.is available .This means the proven, tried ans true ex-Firehawk rebuilt S2 trans with short gears and shimmed to 85% are available. THis means the tub with cage is available as well as the Bilstein Cupcar shocks and carbon dash and lexan rear glass,..all available. And a host of other small Porsche Motorsport parts.
However, because the wife's KITCHEN( URRRRG :furious:  ) is 10k over budget, and because the AC failed in the house last week, and because one of my sponsors for my Panoz Winter series just backed out the other day,..it doesnt mean I can get this back.

So here are most of the go fast parts for a 944 turbo. If these parts were bolted onto a stock 944 turbo S, the car could do a 1.25 out the box at SUmmit with a suck driver behind the wheel.
So I am headed down stairs with some Spaten Octoberfest to watch the old VHS tapes of in car footage before they crumple and break and the VCR blows up.
This only means I HAVE to build a nasty time attack car for next year. Esp since there are NO MORE projects in the house that can disrupt the more important things in life,.........CARS.
If anyone is drinking tonight, have one for the memory of my old car.
Myles
944 turbo guy for life.
gimmewar 08-20-2006, 06:11 AM Well that kinda sucks, I was searching for this thread every couple of weeks for updates :/

spazegun2213 08-24-2006, 04:31 PM damn you all.. after this thread I so want to sell the N/A and get a turbo... but i think i would need to upgrade my wallet to handle a car like that.
AndyRoo 08-25-2006, 12:58 AM a 951 or 968 is STILL the porsche i want to own the most right now. being realistic. and the turbo 3.0 liter 968 is just insane.
