View Full Version : new tires for stock wrx 2005 16" rims
Boosto 04-25-2005, 01:00 PM Will need some new tires to replace the stock potenzas p's. I was thinking about toyo proxes t1-s, have had good luck with them on fwd cars. Any sugesstions on on other options that are sticky and have better wear than the proxes?
Ironlung 04-25-2005, 01:01 PM I just put pirelli p zero nero's on my 16's. Night and day difference, and I think they only cost $100 at discount tire.

UltimateLurker 04-25-2005, 01:09 PM It depends on what you're using them for, can you give us a bit more information? Rain, snow, cold, hot, daily driver, weekend car, small wallet, deep pockets?
bobby d 04-25-2005, 02:03 PM I just put on some Avon M500's from TireRack.com and love them!
armand1 04-25-2005, 02:51 PM The Tire & Wheel forum will probably have more/better advice...

I really need summer tires will never drive in snow. I hear aobut the p zero nero and proxes 4 from folks with stock wrx suspension. I have had experience with proxes t1-s on boosted civic and loved them, unreal handling comming out of falkens. But they are $$ and wear in 12k mi. I am new to 4x4 and was wondering if a summer tire or all season, ie..proxes 4 or p zeros, is better for aggressive cornering without tons of noise. My budget is $550. Any advice appreicated, thanks.
mbiker97 04-26-2005, 12:48 PM Any tire will be a lot better than the stock RE-92s. If you truely don't need any snow capability then get a nice summer 225/50-16 mounted to your stock wheels.
imprez25 04-26-2005, 01:16 PM I just got some Yokahama AVS ES 100's and I love them. So much more grip than the RE92's. I got them a little wider than the stocks, 225/50 vs 205/55 and the car is just more sure footed. I know alot of people recommend all types of tires. Just know that any performance rated tires will be better than what you currently have.

Blue_Rexer 04-26-2005, 10:26 PM How wide can you go on the stock rims??

ursmother 04-27-2005, 10:14 AM I use the Proxes 4 for my summer tires. They will probably better than the t1-s in the rain and last longer. They handle awsome in my opinion.

will check out both proxes 4 and t1s in the plus width size and stock. also will compare the perelli zero neros. thanks for advice. these RE 92's will probably wear in like 5-8 more grand. Can't wait!

They handle awsome in my opinion. The Proxes 4 is not as grippy in the rain or the wet as the T1-S. I've had both, and driven them both to the limit on wet surfaces. The difference on wet roads is actually more noticable than the difference between them in the dry.
I can't say which is more resistant to hydroplaning, as I haven't done much deep water driving on either. I have Proxes 4's on the car now. They are an excellent alternative to the T1-S, especially for those drivers who don't intend to extract the last 5% of the grip offered by the T1-S. You'd be very hard pressed to tell the difference between these two tires from the driver's seat, until you're cornering at above ~.7g or so. That said, as you approach the limit, the T1-S feels better and more responsive. Both slide in a controlled and predictable manner.
My own testing indicates only .02g difference in ultimate grip between these two tires. Cost per mile (price ÷ miles of use) of the Proxes 4 is 50-60% that of the T1-S. Since I can't usually use that last .02g on the street, I've chosen the Proxes 4, with a set of Azenis Sports on the stock wheels for "recreation".
