My 98outback was using about 1qt of oil per 1000mi. When I bought it had 66k miles and noticed it was using oil, so i switched it to Castrol GTX 5w-30, at 70k miles and it still used oil, I was starting to accept this as normal, i've read some other people report to have the same consumption rate as well.

At my 75,000 oil change (i change at every 5,000 miles) I decided to try Castrol High Milage 5w-30, i've heard it work as advertised for some people and not at all for others.
They claim amoung other things it will help slow/stop oil use. Much to my surprise after ~1,800 miles I can report that it has. :disco: It has gone down a little bit on the dip stick, I haven't had to add any oil. My estimate at this point is that at my next 5000 mile change I will not have had to add any oil to it at all, consumption has slowed that much.

I'll update here as appropriate and see how it goes over time. I'm wondering now if it will keep slowing down a bit more? or will it speed up as the oil gets older, closer to my change time. the future will tell.

this thread seems empty without a dancing banana:
this is my experience, ymmv.

The High Mileage (http://www.castrol.com/liveassets/bp_internet/castrol/castrol_usa/STAGING/local_assets/downloads/p,q/pds_gtx_high_mileage_usa.pdf) is thicker than regular GTX, so your consumption should remain under control. :)

That's good news. In an older car I had in Florida I could use single grade 40w oil to deal with the wear. It is good to know there are multi-grade options to use in 4-season climates for when my new Subbie gets old.
