Anybody know what's going on with the Indianapolis motor speedway in Indy? There was a ton of cars and some news people there yesterday. I barely caught a news show that said something about a big announcement that's economically impacting. Goodbye F1?

NASCAR Tire testing on the new surface.

Jeff Gordon was there, along with someone in a Ford, and a Dodge.. IndyCars tested last week on the new surface.

As far as the announcement, I dont know, I live down here in SC and we dont get much news from Indy, but the rumor is a sponsor for the Brickyard 400.

You are most likely right about the rumor; nascar there practicing-a lot of cars at the office and across the street-news saying of a big announcement today.

I will be there in about 24 Hours, of course, on my way through to South Bend, but I always at least drive by the speedway. (did it friday night and sunday night on my way to and from Chicago)

The testing is because of the new, "new" surface. They repaved and the tires were wearing weird, and now they have brought the NASCAR and IndyCar guys back to try the diamond grind they put on it to smooth it out.

I wonder what NASCAR cars run in good weather on a new surface, I would bet its faster than in August. The IndyCar guys were in the 222 range and expect a pole speed of 226.

The Indianapolis Star reported this morning that the announcement today will be related to the Brickyard 400 sponsorship.

I just read on trackforums.com that the race will be called "The Allstate 400 at the Brickyard" or something like that.

I'm not a big fan of the stock cars (flat track = boring) at IMS but the money coming into the track and the local economy sure is nice.

the Brickyard 400 is the One NASCAR race I go to each year, and I actually find it very enjoyable because its a flat track. It might not be much for side-by-side racing, but its a great place to watch the drivers, how/where/how long they brake, where they put the cars in the center of the corner, and what kind of time difference it makes.

People might have thought it was "boring" when Elliott ran away from everyone all day a couple of years ago, but I really loved watching him drive, spot on (driver&car) all day.

The "best" show I have seen there though was Boris Said trying to put a piece of Junk in the field there in 99 or 2000.. (when Greg Moore was in the IROC race just before he was killed) But Boris was driving that junk WAY harder than anyone else was driving.. and didn't make the field. But it was a blast to watch.

Or at least big news. Nascar running the road course would of been big news.
