Oregon Trail Rally Report
National Rally - Oregon Trail Rally - For Immediate Release - April 28, 2005

This Event sponsored by:

Burnsie the Rally Wagon and the crew absolutely flew down the stages this weekend. Setting personal and teams bests, using every inch of the road and having a blast. After winning their class (PGT - production, 4 wheel drive) in the Regional Rallies on Friday and Saturday, the crew had a huge lead (and had taken over 3rd in the National PGT) in Sundays race when things went awry.

Jamie is still not certain how the accident occurred - but what happened (in theory) is that mid corner on a Left 4 - something upset the left hand rear. This immediately sent the car up, into the air and upside down. The first point of impact was the hood and roof on Jamie's side of the car. The car slid for a while on it's lid before coming to rest on the co-drivers side. Shortly after this, the car then caught fire (again!!!!!) which was extinguished rapidly by other rally teams on the scene. The stage was shut down and Jamie was transported via EMT's to a waiting ambulance where she stubbornly refused further treatment.

Jamie and Matthew sustained only minor injuries. Matt is bumped and bruised, while Jamie may have a slight concussion. The Team would like to thank all of the EMT personnel, Doctor Deb, as well as the other rally teams on the scene who assisted during the chaos. More details in the press report soon, but they are both doing just fine, and the rebuild of Mr. Burnsie is well underway.

"We still do not know exactly how it happened, but I do remember that we were flipped like a pancake and landed head/nose first" stated Jamie Thomas, team owner/driver, "Then we slid along upside down, finally coming to rest on the co-drivers side. Shortly thereafter the car caught fire - but was extinguished rapidly - I am just very thankful we are okay. We were really on pace and having a hell of a weekend damn shame it ended like this, but let's face it.... that's racing."

"Jamie is a hell of a driver. She can drive," stated Matt Gauger, team co-driver, "We were really flying, it was great. We will be back out there again soon, we were just cruising!"

Next Event: Dryad/Shytepoke Rally - June - Olympia Washington

Glad your okay.

Real testament to the quality of the cage (I'll definitely look to them if I ever need one).

Also sounds like the other drivers and support crews did a great job getting on top of the fire and taking care of the occupants. It is always nice to hear when those guys do a good job.

Don't know if you determined yet what caused the fire. But after the WRX burned at STPR because of leaking power steering fluid, I wired shut the cap on the PS fluid reservoir. It looks like it would pop off real easy.

Nice to see NASIOC's own John Felstead's name on Jamie's Wagon ... means he donated to her cause. I gave a $100 a couple of years ago, before buying my own $1,000 R compounds started to eat me alive. I think Jamie is going to need some of our help to get back on the Road. If you go to her site: http://www.subiegal.com/sgracing/supporters%20page/rallyfanpage.htm

... you can make a donation and you to can get your name on the improved Suby Wagon Rep car ...

Fire was caused by gear oil leaking out and onto the turbo

at least that's what i hear.
i was just about under oxygen and i.v. by that time

Jamie,

Just FYI: I wore the HANS at Oregon and I found it to be a very low-hassle addition to the safety gear. Takes <1 second to get the straps on/off the helmet. Only problem is where to store it on transits. One thing you may want to keep in mind before getting a HANS is that you'll probably want to get the HANS-specific 2" shoulder harnesses at the same time.

Cheers,
- Christian

Heh Jamie - it was good to finally meet you in person at OTR. When we talked at the banquet it didnt sound like you needed a new shell and from what you posted you dont that's good to hear. I only hope the valves didn't crash when you lost the t-belt.

Anyways glad we had a chance to talk and remember what Tim O'Neil says
"Every good driver needs a big off every 24 months - it keeps you sane!"

If that's true then I am all set for the next 6 years!!

Hope he is up and running again soon.

I would prefer my Login "Flowmastered87GL" to be displayed on Bursie rather than "Mike Rin__"

Nice to see NASIOC's own John Felstead's name on Jamie's Wagon ... means he donated to her cause.

I have been suporting Jamie as much as i can since we did our first TSD rally together back in 2001, i think i was the first person mad enough to sit next to her on a rally.

Jamie has become a very competant rally driver in a very short period of time, she is commited to succeeding so if you are able to support her you will be backing someone who will put in 100% effort.

Good luck with the rebuild Jamie, in the words of the black knight, thats a mere flesh wound. ;)

Jamie-
Invest in a full face helmet, would ya? We all like seeing yer cute face the way it is. :p

Jeesh, I have an ugly mug & I wear one. :)

Still amazes me that open faced ones are legal for what we do...

So you dident find the hans limiting head motion to much? I may start racing soon in some amiture rally and have been wondering about this.

i've talked to many drivers using the HANS
they say they dont even notice it on stage.....

and on stage is what matters most.

According to the FIA delegate who was on the event with us, you can adjust the HANS straps from 150mm to 170mm or so. I kept mine at the delivered 150mm, and I did not notice any restriction moving my head on stage at all.

I could turn my head sufficiently to look out either side window and could touch my chin to my chest (barely). Basically, once wearing it, it was imperceptible. Given what I currently know, I won't race without one again.

I’ve used the HANS as both a Navigator and a Driver, and the ONLY issue I’ve had is trying to look over my shoulder (when pulling out onto another road immediately after a control, or when pulling out of a pit - into a line of cars). I learned real quick to disconnect it first :p

On transits I leave it on. I take off my helmet then loosen the shoulder belts just enough to relieve the pressure. Speaking of which, they say that when you tighten the belts (with it on) you should feel a little uncomfortable. As soon as we get moving though I don’t notice it (in fact, I forget that I even have it on at all  )

I have the “new” style connection posts, and with them I don’t need the quick disconnects (I never got them, I wanted to try it without them first). After I connected and disconnected the tethers a few times it became a reflex. We also crossed the belts, and I haven’t had a problem with them slipping off (some of that has to do with you making sure they’re tight enough to begin with).

I have been wearing the HANS device for more than a year now. As Matt mentioned the ONLY time that I notice the device and the tethers is when I have left the stage and I am on a transit. When you come to a T-intersection you cant look completely left or right 90 degrees. If the transit is a short one to another stage I just leave the rig on and connected. If its a long transit 20 minutes or longer or we are headed into service than the helmet and HANS comes off. At Oregon I left the helmet connected to the device all the time and took both off together (yes including in the car and sometimes while driving! :) ) and I found that to be just as easy. Prior to entering the next control I would just put the assembly back on. I found that leaving the deivce connected to the helmet was easier than fumbling with the disconnects each time. (Yes I have the quick disconnects). I sometimes notice the device yoke on my shoulders but only when I don't have the shoulder straps seated correctly on over the yoke.

I will never race again without one.

awesome feedback guys thank you.

it's been on the "i gotta get that" list for a while now.

i'll be sporting one very soon that i promise you.

I guess i will get the quick disconnects as well.

I am one of those drivers though that rips the helmet off at the end of the stage
with a full head of hair,
i cant stand to have the helmet on for a second longer than i have to...

i just wonder how tedious it is to get the HANS on and off
coz i'm going to want it OFF asap...

Jamie, glad you two are both ok. Cars can be fixed, but it's harder to fix people. :-) Look into the HANS. Dave and I have been wearing them for over a year without any issues. We have the HANS specific 2" belts as well.

Burnsie will be on the road before you know it. :-)

Cheers! John

Jamie, I have a Sedan WRB hood that you could have for however much it would cost to ship it out to you from the east coast if you are interested. The paint is in good shape and only has one microscopic ding in the front. Let me know if you iterested.
