calibug 04-28-2005, 06:14 PM Anybody in here live near Brigham Young? Looks like I'll be doing an internship there this summer from June 6th until August 12th. Just wanted to know who I'll be pointing at when a Subaru drives by! :) Also, since I'm from NC, I have no clue what to expect in terms of weather. Any information ya'll could throw my way would be appreciated! Thanks!

azn2yunr 04-28-2005, 06:27 PM weather is a really dry and hot summers. last year was most plesant than hot and were still getting showers today when it should be spring.
oh and unless your mormon than your in for some culture shock. stores dont sell beer on sundays if at all. theres no such thing as caffine on campus and the subway on campus folows the rules so much that they only put 4 olives on your sandwich. oh and you cant wear shorts (suposedly) or have a beard (definatitly) on campus.
SubyDuz 04-28-2005, 07:01 PM You thought SLC was culture shock you ain't you ain't seen nothin yet there Jason.
azn2yunr 04-28-2005, 07:32 PM haha. i grew up here so slc isnt bad for me.
i spent 2 hours in provo on the byu campus no less and thought i was gonna go crazy
I dunno about culture shock, but I've lived in northern Utah almost all my life, and when I go somewhere like Cali...damn, I mean darn
*edit* As for weather...if you happen to wander up to the park city area and see snow on the ground, don't be too suprised
njc200 04-28-2005, 07:44 PM Dry heat. Summers in Northern Utah get pretty hot, definitely in the 80's and 90's while you'll be here. It'll even hit 100 a couple of days in there. I'm not sure what its like where you're from in NC, but I'd imagine the only real difference will be the humidity.
Unless you're mormon you'll want to spend the majority of your time (outside of your internship) in Salt Lake. It'll seem "closer" to normal than Provo.
Are you bringing the subie with you from NC?
I'm sure we'll have at least one meet during that time so you should come out.
calibug 04-29-2005, 01:36 AM I just read the BYU Honor Code which I'll have to abide by while doing research. Um, yeah, so about these mormons. Are they strict or just all talk. From the way it sounds, I won't be able to wear most of the clothes I own. If I accept the offer, I'll probably be greeted by culture shock on day one. Nothing against mormons, but I'm kinda scared.
I actually drive a truck. My BF drives an STi. I'm just on here to hang out and waste time in OT. If I do accept the internship, I would love to meet some normal people at a meet. I'm nervous too, b/c I'd fly out, so no transportation. I might have to consider the drive.
I live in the Western mountains of NC, so I'm used to very mild temperatures and low humidity in the summers.
I appreciate the information. I haven't decided yet, but we'll see!

docwhorocks 04-29-2005, 09:53 AM I'd defiantely reccomend having transportation out there. Since you're not mormon, being stuck on campus might literally drive you insane.
If you do decide to drive out, you're welcome to crash on my couch for a night if need be. Cheyenne is about 7-8 hours drive from Provo. Though if you have a heavy foot you could do it in 4-5 ;) Upside of Provo, it's only about a 4-5 hour drive to Vegas :D

if you cant score points for their mens basketball team than they're strict. if you can on the other hand they're all talk.
stilov 04-30-2005, 02:27 AM Well I am Mormon, and believe it or not I'm pretty cool...I wouldn't normally come out and say tha, but seeing that you don't know me, hear me, or see me...I have to. They (we) aren't that bad. Yes their are 'some' but that's the same everywhere. I went to BYU and I do agree if you aren't used to the honor code...that it may be shocking. Just come and be open to new stuff...you'll be fine.
Helmut 04-30-2005, 04:21 PM If you can go most of the summer with little caffine or Beer, you will do fine in Provo. It's all gosh and heck most of the time and thats sorta nice. You are only 4-5 hours from Las Vegas, Be aware that if you are on Campus houseing that means no BF overnight! No if's and's or Butt's :) about it. He will have to have a hotel or other place to crash. You used to not even have your Brother stay over night in female houseing.. *this is from my wife* Its a very clean city, safe at night to walk alone or with others.. Hell even salt lake is that way., Temps range from 85 to 100 in provo for summer. Humidity is only like 15 to 25% total, unlike your 85 to 95%. You will get a great education from BYU, they are the flag ship of the Church of Ladder Day Saints for school, = to Noter Dame for edu. well thats my .02
calibug 05-03-2005, 11:50 AM Well I officially accepted the offer. I'll be flying out there June 4th :) . Thanks for the input. I'll keep an open mind, and buy new clothes before I go. Thanks guys!
