View Full Version : where do you hide stuff in your impreza
DoctorNick 07-27-2001, 06:05 PM where do you hide stuff in your impreza? I am NOT talking about drugs alk or guns. I am talking about money and walkmans and cdplayers or video cameras(I film in hd and well sometimes I need to lock my camera up). So if you get broken into(smash and grab) where would you guys hide your stuff? I am very parinoid of locking a 20000 buck camera up in my car, trunk even.
PhlypSide 07-27-2001, 06:11 PM Hrmm I guess that depends on how big the camera is.
I guess you could always just get a nice section of heavy-duty coated wire (like the kind they use on bike-locks) and lock it to something in the trunk.
(I don't know what the trunk mechanism is like in an Impreza but if they are like most cars they have that bar that attaches them to the body of the car, wrap it around that in and through the handle of a locking quality case.... and then on top of all that cover the thing up with a dirty old blanket or something.)
Also make sure that if you're going to park your car that you don't get out and fiddle with stuff (particularly expensive stuff) right where you decide to park it.
I'd suggest pulling over a few blocks away from where you plan on parking and then hiding your stuff in the trunk there... no use putting something expensive in the trunk if the potential thieves saw you putting something in there :)

Youngun 07-27-2001, 06:20 PM If its small enough, the objects can go in the handlift compartment
suby ej25 07-27-2001, 06:28 PM yup..das where i put everything
RallyGuy2k 07-27-2001, 06:38 PM Hhhhmmmm...As a pro photographer my first thought is...
Unless you have a serious alarm with pager, I wouldn't leave it in there. I ALWAYS take my gear with me...even if I eat or shop before or after a shoot. I usually shoot film and digital...way to much $$$ to leave hangin' in my car...and I'm gettin' sick of carrying it around....
I'm still deciding on a better alarm...also I'm looking into "installing" a lockable box much like those that you see in the back of trucks, in the trunk...against the back seat...bolted to the bottom. I have a none lockable one secured there by bungie cords that are perminently installed. It holds great for aggressive driving but it's nothing if someone breaks into the trunk.
I've found several lockable box candidates...I'll post for those who are interested....

DoctorNick 07-27-2001, 07:06 PM hand lift compartment?
ok well I am looking into a box for the trunk to lock down my sub also. I will tell you if I find anything but I want to keep it as low profile also. so if someone does break open my trunk they can search it and not find it unless they look hard. I am thinking of removing my tire and putting it in there but they woudl seem to easy and a criminal woukd see thru that.
Yeah, I am a true to true camera man. heehee lets just say that the camera I bring around has a million in insurance and the lenses which right now are in my glove box (what I am really looking to hide better#@!) go for about a quarter million a piece and well lets just say that they are not mine but I am the one that has to drive them around and use them vurtually everyday. I rather do it right and hide them good. I ahhve had one smash and grab downt he block now so I am getting kinda worried.
Tainted 07-27-2001, 08:16 PM Where is this hand lift compartment?
And what about smaller items such as watches and money?
sorry to butt in.
Mike
DoctorNick 07-27-2001, 08:22 PM your not butting in. I was asking where it is. I still don't know where but now I know what it is :D
HoratioCaine 07-27-2001, 10:04 PM I'd get a gun safe for the car to put smaller items in, but larger ones would require a larger safe. Then either weld or bolt it down very well (with 1-way bolts).
HoratioCaine 07-27-2001, 10:05 PM With that kind of money though, I'd for sure check with my homeowner's and get a rider if needed.
MagicMT 07-27-2001, 10:06 PM so.. where is it?
DoctorNick 07-27-2001, 10:16 PM right now it is in my house in my room in a water/fireproof safe. but when I am on the road filming football//hockey it sits in my trunk inside a metal case with a magnium lock. but thanks for the ideas guys...keep them comming. I would also liketo know abotu smaller places to hid lenses. ebcause I don't wanna ahve the robber win both of my prizes :D

btw I am goign to be shooting a few imprezas in hd so if someone has alot of bandwith and wouldn't mind hosting high def work...I will send it to you via dvd.
RedBrighton96 07-28-2001, 12:26 AM If you guys put any kind of box in your trunk make sure it is secured so it can't be removed, as in welded or seriously bolted down. If you aren't aware, it's very easy to break into our trunks. I had my trunk broken into and my sub box stolen out of my car a month or so ago and was suprised at how easy it was to break into. So just a heads up if you wern't already aware of it.
Rob
Oh and if i have smaller stuff i want to lock up, I just lock it in my glove compartment. It's where i keep my sunglasses and cd player face if i can't take it with me.
Accurit 07-28-2001, 12:54 AM secret places!!! muahhahaha
Safir 07-28-2001, 02:48 AM I know you said no trunk, but when i want to secure stuff in my car, i put it in the trunk and flip the little switch on the latch, then the only way to open the trunk is from the lock on the trunk... wich takes considerably more time and effort then the average smash&grab job... and certainly secure enough for anything I own...
8Complex 07-28-2001, 04:19 AM If you'd like to make a small compartment that is well-hidden, talk to Donnie at Action Audio in Streamwood... he's in the club and a great guy, plus he's pretty free-thinking, so if you were to show him what you'd want to hide, he could come up with a spot. I'm almost thinking make a panel for behind the rear seats in the trunk that stands vertical from the top of it, so the trunk has a false back wall, then you could store stuff in there.
PM me if you want Donnie's number.

Charge 07-28-2001, 03:59 PM For watches, and small stuff(wouldn't work for your camera/lenses), uner the seat isn't bad. My brother had a custom box built for under the front seat of his '87 325is. He stored his PowerBook in it(he lives in Chicago, parks on Damon). He had the metal/lockable box made for about $175 by a local shop.
Even had it lined inside, with some type of material.

HoratioCaine 07-28-2001, 04:32 PM Charge - Yeah... that's pretty much what a gun safe is. They're made to go under the seat, bolt down well, and are extremely hard to get into.
DoctorNick 07-28-2001, 05:50 PM thanks for all the help guys. I am thinking a mix of "tfatf n20 setup" hiding area like vin d had in his car(under passenger seat...well actually opening the passenger seat) and a gun box. I will tell you how it goes...soon I hope. but if anyone else got ideas please keep them comming:lol:

STiTuner 07-28-2001, 10:47 PM How about where the spare tire normally sits. ture there are times that you need it but just stick the spare in the trunk if you got the room and put the expensive stuff in the compartment below.
Brad
Blindeye_03 07-29-2001, 02:17 AM Oh and if i have smaller stuff i want to lock up, I just lock it in my glove compartment.
MY01 RS's dont come with locks on the glovebox:rolleyes: , I dont know about the MY02 though...

MagicMT 07-29-2001, 02:32 AM Uh I have an 01 and a locking glove box...
Mike
boostaholic 07-30-2001, 01:37 PM so uhm... don't tell me I'm the only person here who is wondering where I can hide smaller things? Anyone found any ingenius spots or panels that could be of interest?
rogue 07-30-2001, 02:21 PM Small stuff? If you don't need to get to it frequently...
The center console trim pulls apart pretty easily, no tools required. You COULD hide cash or such in there, but it takes some good yanking to get it off and on.
