are there any major differences between the old 2-dr impreza L's and the 2.5rs' besides the engine and front fascia? i want to know because im planning on buying a 2-dr impreza and mod it to hell
impreza L's are about 1/3 the price of a 98 RS

thanks

The older L's tend not to be AWD, not have ABS, and not have rear discs. Other than that, it's suspension (you can't throw a rear sway on an older L without buying some RS parts) and some cosmetic things.

It depends on what kind of L you get....the 2.2L L has a rear sway bar and AWD, the LX's of all years had AWD, ABS, and 4 wheel discs. Base L's either had AWD or FWD...dont let some shmuck tell you the car is AWD when it is in fact FWD...it happens sometimes...if in doubt, look for the rear diff.

ive heard about some of the older impreza's being fwd.. so all i have to look for is the rear diff? and do 2.5rs mods fit the L as well?

thanks..

Yes, most of the 2.5RS mods fit right onto the L without a snag...once again, it depends on how loaded your L is going to be when you buy it. Look for either AWD badging on the trunk or just look for a rear diff. Also, you would probably want a rear sway bar, so look for one of those bad boys also.

As of 96 or so, I think all L's were AWD. Here's the difference between a stock L and an RS (circa 98-01):
The L:
lacks cruise control as standard
lacks a standard spoiler
lacks standard alloys
lacks standard CD player
has 15" tires vs. RS 16"
lacks sport suspension
lacks standard foglights
lacks the "sport" seats of the RS
lacks ABS
lacks color matching handles, safety strips, and windows
lacks a leather steering wheel and shifter

For comparison...

1996 LX:
has cruise control as standard
has the smaller spoiler standard
has standard alloys
lacks standard CD player
has 15" tires vs. RS 16"
lacks sport suspension
has standard foglights
lacks the "sport" seats of the RS
has ABS
has color matching handles
lacks a leather steering wheel and shifter
has trunk light
has folding rear seats
has AWD
has 4 wheel discs...
10.23" Ventilated Front Disc Brakes
10.31" with drum-in-disc parking brake

You own an Acura TL and you're getting a 96 Impreza with 70,000+ miles on it???
Well I can't say whether it'd have AWD... but i'd suggest getting a wagon, maybe an Outback Sport Wagon, I'd add something to your garage besides an experimental car, but a car you can put a bike in or put skis on the roofrack, etc.

In theory, it SHOULD have AWD, but then again, there were a few FWD's still hanging around in 1996 from the unsold 1995's...it might be a 95, sold as a 96....I have no idea though. IT probably most definately....Actually, It does have the 2.2L if it is infact a 96.

Good luck! Sounds good! GET ALL SERVICE RECORDS OR DONT BUY THE CAR!!!! Believe me, it sucks when you buy a car, no records, and stuff starts to happen to it (i.e. my impreza)
