View Full Version : One less WRX on the road.

1300 miles on my WRX. Lost control of the car, don't remember how it happened, it happened so fast. All I can say, the car flipped two or three times. I'll try to post pics, I'm still trying to figure that one out (without it being so small). Anyway guys, take care of your cars - DRIVE REPONSIBLY. I'll never forget this for the rest of my life. I'm lucky to be alive, much less I walked away, no breaks, no cuts, only serious bruises and soreness. email me if you want to see more pics.

ouch dude, sorry to hear that man..

i was in an accident on june 3rd, my buddy flipped his ****....

i fractured my right orbital, the right side of my head, and had a brain hemmorhage....

8 stitches in my forehead, and a cut on my leg from my knee to my ankle....and yes, we were wearing seatbelts...most definately would be dead if i hadn't been..

hope you fair better than me though, just found out the other day the cause of my double vision - 4th nerve pulsy...ruptured a mjor eye nerve, and chances are its going to be permanent....at least it can be fixed with glasses..but...*sigh*

I haven't been able to drive since the accident....which reallly is driving me nuts. hope all goes well for you, and if you need to ask about anything head wise (if yah knocked your noggin) I can probably answer it for you...a million CT scans, doctor appointments and hospital visits later, im damn near an expert.

also, remember....it's just a car. it could be worse, much worse.

Your spoiler must have been misaligned. :D

Seriously though, what were the road conditions. Were you on a highway or what? Other traffic aorund? Its not often someone just flips without knowing and if you were doing something stupid I wouldnt chew you out. Just wonderin what the deal is.

oh CRAP! Glad to hear you're okay! At least yer car didn't catch fire, or end up on the roof after all that rolling... good luck though, maybe an STi in yer future like all those i-clubbers that have lost their loved ones recently.

I had a baaad head-on car accident in a little hyundai accel vs a dirt embankment. about 40mph or so is my guesstimate of the impact speed. slid sideways in a ditch for about 90 yards or some ungodly distance. If I slid another 10 feet, I would have hit a drainpipe in the ditch and likely rolled the car.

I firmly believe the only reason I am here today is because a seatbelt saved my life. The car did not have airbags.

What do you US guys do to crash that many WRX?? I just hope that you don't lift the throttle if you start loosing it in a bend. An AWD car really needs to be corrected differently from a FWD or a RWD car. Maybe a drivers course might be needed on one of the many trackdays you have (maybe at Thunderhill?)

People need to start driving more carefully in their wrx...

Thanks for the responses. The message I wanted to send out was exactly what most of you have responded with: These Subarus are a far cry from an Integra GSR or even a Mustang GT. I was still learning the differences. Believe me, I am not an inexperienced driver. I've been driving high performance cars for more than a decade, this one just got out from under me. Fortunately there was no one else on the road, it was around 2am. I'm not sure how fast I was going, and no, I was not drinking. Turning out of a soft curve I think it was a dip in the road that got the car a little squirrly. Next thing I know the car did a long 180 and hit the curb sideways. The car slid about 40 feet (both driverside tires digging into the grass) before finally giving away to a couple flips, end over end. The car landed on a small tree (which probably kept me from ending up upside down). I got out and walked for help. I'll be making the claim Monday, so i'll let everyone know as soon as I do if it's totaled, which I damn hoope it is. I don't think I'd ever want to get behind of the wheel of a car that was flipped and still trust it to ever save my life again. But anyhow, hope things go smooth, and i'm just glad to still be here.

glily:

I'm sorry to hear this happened to such a wonderful car, but I'm very glad you are alive and well to talk about it.

On a side note, I *finally* noticed the "magic feature" of the ABS to over-sensitize during braking should your car encounter a bump or hole in the road. Really freaked me out, as the literally 1second of ABS pulsing caused a *feeling* of loss of pedal pressure....

I've been hearing lots of WRX accidents, including some in my home town Calgary. WINTER hasn't even hit the streets and all ready there are lots of roll overs. Is the WRX a badly designed vechicle? What's going on?

Oh ya, Glilly, you're car's a write off. It's toast, I'm guessing that the frame is bent and it would cost more to fix then it is to buy a new car.

Man that bites.... you said it rolled over? It didn't look like the doors and roof were even touched. Maybe the pics are just too small. Glad to hear you were able to walk away.

Geez, with so many rollovers, how long before Bridgestone/Subaru gets sued?

 LMAO:lol:

People always looking to place blame, fingers point everywhere but themselves. It is like MX5_555 said, you meed to drive out of the skid, and must have the revs moving. I learned a little driving 4X4 trucks in the sand, snow, mud and dirt. Talk about a blast in the mud "muddin'" , if you get sideways just point the wheel where you want it to go and give it gas.

Are the tires that bad? I took a tight turn in the rain last night at a slow speed. I wondered if I could get it to break lose. It slip just slightly for a split second. I think any other car would have oversteered easily.

Again sorry to hear. If it completly rolled over (you said it flipped) please show more pics. I am interested in seeing how well the frame held up. They say the rally car can support 20 times it's own weight:eek: That's a lot

The wheel /tire combo was 17" Prodrive P1's wrapped in Dunlop Sport W-10 215/45/17 rubber.

here's another pic & when I said flipped or rolled, the rear end of the car I believe hit the ground 3 times, the front of the car mstly stay up in the air, it touched ground once but damage was minimal.

07-30-2001, 01:42 AM
The WRX is a very fast and agile car.

Therein lies the problem.

Glad you're ok and I guess I'm not going to be able to get a WRX for a very long time due to the insane insurance premiums that are going to hit WRX owners due to all these wrecks.

Oh well...

w-10's? i've had two friends loose there cars just after putting w10's on.... just thought of that..
bmw 325i (driving straight!!!! little water then spining...)
VW beetle Supercharged, (rounded a corner tire UNSEALED blew then lost it.)(both cars sporting 18's & 40 series tires though...)

glilly
07-30-2001, 10:17 AM
You think the W-10's are that bad? I bought them over the Kuhmo's because of the softer compound and more aggresive tread design - guess I could have made a better choice, although i'm sure it wasn't all the tires' fault.
As far as all these responses on buying the car back, who would I take it to to part it out as well as store it, then junk it after parting it out? I don't exactly have room in my garage for a parts car. I do think that he engine and drivetrain are in fine shape, what advantage would I have swapping that into an older RS? Wouldn't the weight & performance be about the same? Now if I put that engine into a 2wd car, that I would understand making a difference.

Dude, I'm glad you're ok. It sounds like you had a hell of a crash, and a serious fright.

On the bright side, let's hear it for Subaru crash safety! One big reason why I went with Subaru for my first car is because I was in a nasty one-car crash in high school and walked away. I was the passenger when the somewhat inept driver took the Legacy L wagon off the country road and into a huge oak tree at about 70MPH...going thru a telephone pole on the way... ow. We all were able to walk to find help!

The W-10's are an excellent tire in my opinion....not to start a tire war but I have used these for the last year with NO complaints....Grippy, Decent in the wet, Good Wear..So the part about them being crap is just that....crap....I will put my w-10 shod RS and happily buy another set....Oh BTW I have the same size that you have...From what it sounds like, the car developed a "snap Oversteer" I really don't think the tires had anything to do with it.....You could have been on Race rubber and done the same thing....My 2 pesos....:D...sorry to see a White scooby Pass but the main thing is that I am glad your OK

Talking about tires. Best combo I've come accross are 17 inch with Bridgestone S02 Pole Position or The new S03. Never heard of the W10. Will take a look at the Tirerack offerings to get some info on this one.

Come winter, drive the Scooby with care. The car has the tendency to understeer, and that is precisely what it will do if you have fitted summer tires and be driving on snow. Winter tires really help a lot with this car too.

To learn a bit about the car in winter, go to an empty parking lot when the first snow has fallen. Just try to drive the car at low speed. If the car understeers just apply the throttle and it will go into controlable oversteer.

Scooby South -
I agree with you, the tires were great for the week I had them. I'll miss the Aspen White, since I had what seemed to be one of only a few running around my area. Guess I'll have to go with another color from what ever's still available upon completion of the insurance claim. Anyway, i'm sure i'll probably go back to the same tire/wheel set up I had. ....i may even be able to salvage a few of the rims/tires out of the wreck.... who knows; It will all work itself out in due time.

Another example of how subaru will ultimately regret its commercial T.V. campaign for the WRX. Glad you're ok man! Are you gonna get another WRX?

Wm

glilly
07-31-2001, 08:59 PM
William67,
That damn commercial. I was sure I could make that turn doing 100! Yeah, whatever. Hey, I can honestly admit that I'm still learning the AWD system, after all it's my first and I just came out of a 2.5 year relationship with a modded GSR. COMPLETELY different cars. However, that may not mean that was the cause of the accident. But to answer your question, I am still unsure about getting another WRX. I'm currently talking with West Houston Subaru about that. If my payments go any higher, I may not be able to afford it as i'm sure my insurance will. As long as they can keep me happy with a good deal, i'll definately do it.

First off let me say SOrry to hear about the accident. Hope you wind up fully ok.

Second is a question.. it seems like every wrx i hear about being hit, flips 2 or 3 times.. *** is up with this?
