Ok, I have driven the wrx, I have driven a 2.5 RS. I liekd them both. the AWD is a very cool thing, but I was just watching TV. I happened to see a commercial for the WRX, it stated that the new WRX stays glued to the road even in the most adverse weather conditions. Yes, AWD and good tires are great. they will do a great job, but the commericial goes on to show a proffesional driver on a closed very wet road. he is blazing around a corner at a pretty high speed. I think this is a bad way to present this car. Most people do not know how to drive in the rain to begin with. Give them AWD and they will think they are invincible. Dont get me wrong. most people know the limitations of their cars, but with all the WRX's I have sen crashed recently, dont you think people should be given a course in how to drive AWD cars before they can buy a WRX. I mean, the dealership gives anyone with the money a fast, badass car, and turns them loose to roll it. I dont know, I am rambling. I will stop now.

yeah.... we've been over this

every time someone mentions a crashed wrx someone's always like...they should give driving instructions w/ the wrx instead of scca memberships

or something like that

its not really even the thought that someone will crash it. it is the thought that I have to drive near these people on the highway. i was driving home from a car meet in toledo last week. The rain was so bad I couldnt see past the hood of my car. I was going maybe 25 miles an hour on the turnpike. I almost pulled over it was so bad. but lo and behold, I see a dot in my rearview mirror. it is a Jeep, blazing down the road at about 60 miles an hour. now, dont go saying I am just a timid driver, this guy was driving like an idiot. he was hydroplaning like crazy. But I believ he figured his 4 wheel drive system would save him from anything. its that mentality that I think needs to be worked on is all.

I've driven the WRX in the pouring rain on a twisty back road. The ad isn't that far fetched IMO... I don't think that the ad is "bad". Many car ads are worse. The ad makes me smile whenever I see it! Seize the rain slicked road.

Well one things for sure, with all these people wrecking WRX’s the insurance companies are gonna have no remorse when in comes time to insure them. That might force me to keep my RS.

Safety is NO accident!!

Have'nt you seen the ads from other manufacturers displayng almost identicle feats? Nissan, Volvo, VW, Pontiacs Bonneville ads always crack me up with their Wide Track ads and snow covered roads.
There's also the Chevy Blazer ad that shows one driving on a twisty CompGenImage road through rain, snow, sleet, avoiding falling boulders etc. If the ad were in real time the truck would be going like 150mph and pulling 3.gs around the turns. When the ad POV switches to inside the car there's a baby sleeping, a grocery bag with eggs on the top completely undisturbed and what appears to be a valium induced smile on the drivers face. The only thing that seems to be missing is the cell phone glued to her head.

By comparison the WRX ads are shown in real time on real roads. At least they aren't doing 4 wheel drifts or donuts, althought that would be pretty cool too.

At the bottom of all car ads ""Professional driver on closed course." I think the WRX ad is true to life if you have the balls. I love driving in the rain in my GT. Of course not as fast as the WRX but pretty darn fast. I have never broke loose.

I was turning right on red yesterday, and it had just rained mind you. I wasnt thinking and floored it, so here I am all the way on the gas, now in 2nd gear 1/2 way through my turn and my rear end is going all fishy on me; Now, I would NEVER do that with other cars around me...but even with AWD youre not any better in the rain IMO.

Ha ha! Sorry, that's not a very nice way to put it, but I think Blindeye could use some schooling in adverse-weather driving.

most people know the limitations of their cars

 I'd like to meet these people! Especially down here in Texas, where 9/10 of the cars are SUVs, no one knows anything about a vehicle's limitations. And can you blame them- they haven't been taugh! Of course, they're SUVs, they reach their limit on every turn!

9/10 of the cars are SUVs

That goes for the entire US. The SUV's are so popular do to advertising. Just the same as the WRX...for those uneducated people of all ages who see my RS, and they think it's a WRX. Stupid uneducated people, willing to pay over $65 to fill their tank twice a week, because, "Hey this is America, Buddy." and they reserve the right to drive whatever they want.

There was a really good artice on TV about Europeans and what they drive and what they think of American cars, and SUV's. We look so stupid compared to the rest of them.

Ten years ago, five years ago....how popular were SUV's...they've been around for years. And now, they're sucking up 85% more gasoline than the res of (ahem) ME.

But hey, "Who am I to gudge. This is America, and I'm entitled to say whatever the hell I want."

good cars doesn't make good drivers...
I think some of the wrx owners are getting big headed like some of the suv drivers I seen on the road. Sure it has AWD, but that doesn't mean YOU are good enough to not make it crash. You can push the limit further with this car, but that doesn't mean you CAN'T crash it. I see these suvs doing 70-80mph during down pours.. sigh. I think the insurance rate is going to go up for our wrx, no doubt about that. And I don't want to be in the same sentence as "mustang GT" when it comes to insurance.

yeah, i got tricked into buying a WRX because of those damn commercials. as many times as i've tried, i still can't get my car to morph into the rally car when i drift through corners!!

maybe if i try it on a dirt road...

You must have the blue one to do this, and yeah...only on a muddy dirt road will it work!
They need to put the other colors into the ads...
Black one on stealth missions.
Red going invisible during sunsets.
White in the snow.
Yellow over bananas on an ice cream dish!

What's bad is how 90% of Americans don't understand what AWD is. It seems most SUV owners give a line like "Oh, I need something that can handle snow." So dumb.

Actually you must need the ground effects package as shown. The edges are flaired at the bottom to create a wind sheer that helps lift the car into a power slide.

Seriously...... drive smart. I don't need my premiums to go up..

All you have to do to get the WRX to morph is sell it and buy the better looking 2000 RS coupe. :D
The ad should say
"Professional driver piloting a car with better tires."
the 17 inch wheels that the car is on do not include the stock RE92 butterfingers.
so he was probably on running gear much better equiped for the job at hand.

I'd be interested to see a study in the occurance of acidents involving WRX's with better tires vs. WRX's driving on the stock RE92's.

-DoomEquation

I can see the hanging window warning now:

Warning: Your WRX is equipped with tires that cannot keep a 165hp 2.5 RS stuck to the road let alone a turbocharged 227hp WRX. The ability of this vehicle to reach speeds and g-forces around turns that these pathetic tires cannot handle is not an invitation to do so. 4 wheel slide at own risk.- Fuji Heavy Industries

p.s. Subaru doesnt even give us the 4pots in america, they just want to move cars not sell cars that are perfectly equiped for the kind of dope driving pictured in their commercials. Thank god for the aftermarket.

I think it's stupid for people to worry about WRX's crashing all the time, I'm sure 100 times as many suvs and minivans crash everyday compared to any performance car let alone a WRX.

I own a Mustang GT and my premiums are less than what my dad pays for his Explorer, well, whatever.

It just pisses me off that I would have to pay more insurance because American drivers suck, and even tho I've never had an accident (and I drive fast) my insurance seems to go up every year because of all the incompetent soccer moms in their minivan with the cell phone glued to their ear  ok I'm done.

AWD or not, your car will hydroplane, although you'll have a little more control. And yeah, those certainly aren't RE-92's in that commercial.

I am so sick of stupid american drivers.

Next time a SUV swerves into my lane, instead of me running off the road, I'm just going to swerve back.

Should be interesting to see if I can get the SUV to flip before my car is too badly damaged to continue.

Maybe insurance would buy me a new car.

People are just so damned stupid, it is mind boggling.

Take today for instance, I had to drive to atlanta to pick up my girlfriend at the atlanta airport. That's a 4 hour drive or so for most people, 3 hours for me. Anyway, I have only driven through atlanta two times and never been to the airport (cept when I've flown in). They had the I285 exits from I20 closed off today (why?) and apparently the 80,000 cars in front of me could not figure out what to do, despite the rather large and painfully obvious DETOUR TAKE i20 TO i75/85 signs.

So I sat in stopped traffic for an hour on a 6 lane interstate. No accidents, no road work, just idiots.

I am so sick and ****ing tired of the idiots out there driving.

I had a soccer mom in her minivan change from the fast lane to middle lane, but in mid change she sees a big rig in the far right lane (not the lane she is going into) and she violently swerves back into the fast lane.... Where I am, because she was doing 65 and I was doing 85. So I am forced into the grass median (for the second time of the day).

I'm just glad I know how to drive my damn car, otherwise I'd be a stain on the pavement.

99.99999% of the ****ing idiot drivers out there know NOTHING about their cars and how they handle at the limit.

Oh yes, about two miles down the road a horse trailer (with two horses in it) decided to do the same thing as the minivan.

Only this braintrust decided he wanted to occupy both lanes for a good 20 miles or so.

What the hell is wrong with people?

It was pouring going out of atlanta and I'm in the HOV lane (3 people in car) doing about 65-70 (AWD, Rain grooved tires, left foot ready near brake as always) and this jeep comes up behind me doing what must have been close to 90-100MPH, locks up his brakes and nearly hydroplanes into my bumper. I had nowhere to go because I was stuck behind a geriatric driving his cadillac in the HOV lane (single occupant in the car, wish that ****er would get a ticket). Luckily I didn't get bumped, but I just don't understand what the **** is wrong with people.

AAAARGH!

Well, I have seen other commercials that do bother me, but seeing as I had just seen the WRX commercial, and I was browsing the I-Club, I would use that as reference. and to be honest, THE worst commercial I have seen, as in, the one that portrays a car doing something it shouldnt be doing with a regular stupid driver, is the commercial for the maxima. When it is in the desert, going sideways. dont get me wrong, I love that commercial, but it does glamorize the car a bit, making people do stupid things in them.

Nah, turning a 4 hour drive into a 3 hour one doesn't require insane speeds...just a little speeding. My trips from home to college during breaks were supposed to be 2 hour drives..I'd make it in an hour the majority f the time.

But I have to agree with remarcable, most people don't know how to drive their god damn cars, especially in adverse conditions. For instance, on june 3rd, my buddy flipped his car, it was raining. I can't remember how fast he was going, i cant remember anything from 10 minutes before the accident until I woke up in the trauma center...but I had been telling him all night that he needed to slow the **** down b/c of the rain, and he was doing a terrible time of handling his car. I was about 3 minutes from home...I should have just got out and walked...oh well. Yea, he was sober by the way. I have had people spin out and hydroplane in the road right in front of me..dus to bald tires and speeding. I also have had a person hydroplane, cross the road, and hit me...not fun.

Those are dangerous roads out there...from now one, I only drive with people I trust if I can't drive myself - gotta wait till august 1 for the doc to check out my skull fractures and brain hemmorhage, and still wait until august 14th for a prism to be put into my glasses to correct my (posssibly permanent) double vision.

So you gotta watch your asses, and assume everyone on the road is going to go straight when the have their turn signals on, or turn when they dont (DAMN I hate people that dont signal) Or that that old bitch next to you is going to want to be in your lane, despite you being there.

Caino

edit: aside from the improper use of turn signals, I also hate people that tail people....my whole family except me does it, and it drives me ****in nuts.

There are millions of people in this country that have drivers licenses and all of them will say they are a better than average driver..... Anyone that drives slower than you is an idiot, and anyone that drives faster is a maniac. Part of being safe on the roads is watching out for those idiots and maniacs. If you are doing 85 on any road, you will run into problems. Many of these idiots don't expect cars to be approaching at that speed (if they do look in their rear view mirrors) and most likely will cut you off, so be safe out there.

rogue

I'll drink to that, ryan!

The drivers here in CT suck rocks. Pretty much like the rest of the country.

But I have friends who will follow too close, speed, and try to pass on the right... then will slam on the brakes and swerve when someone does something unexpected in front of them! You have to assume the other guy is going to do the stupidest thing all the time!

remarcable: why in the name of God were you passing some minivan with a 20mph delta V before she'd even completed her lane change? How close had you been on her? Let the car in front of you complete their lane change before moving in to pass!

Forget speed, most of the accidents I've seen (including the two fender benders I've been responsible for over the years) were caused by drivers following too closely! My hits were both on the same highway (95) both below the speed limit, when the drivers in front of me hit their brakes hard and unexpectedly and I wasn't looking at the time.

Slow down, back off, stay safe!
