Hi guys and gals.

It's not obvious from the title of the thread here http://www.i-club.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=74707

Today Simon De Banke set a new world record by driving a new WRX MY02 (known as the MY01 in the UK) sideways for exactly 2 hours 11 minutes and 18 seconds. That's when the fuel ran out!!

Read the thread above for all the info. One of the pictures from the record is below, plenty more on the links in the above thread.

What a stunning achievement. :D

Fantastic! Now, who's collecting the money and where do I send it to? :D This is just another example of why the Subaru community is tops!

Info on donations etc can be found at http://www.scoobynet.co.uk/worldrecord/

Simon had to do a few laps going slowly in the oposite direction just to "unwind" himself afterwards. After that he was OK really.

I think Simon had it seriously sussed out before the attempt, it's just that a run so long had never been attempted before. It was a massive exercise to organise the record attempt. There was a big relief in the people on site when he went through the 15 minute minimum barrier. We had no idea 2 hours later he would still be sliding that thing round. We had originally calculated the fuel would last 1 1/2 hours. Looks like the WRX is more economical than we anticipated. ;) Remarkable.

WOW I can't imagine. Congrats on the great acheivement. What was the old record...... 15 Minutes????

I wonder if you can send to the insurance companies to document the safety features of the car. What other car can you hold a controlled skid for over 2 hours? Doubt it

Congrats again!!! I donated, I hope the see th "US & $" before the amount. No concept of the exchange rates:)

Rock on! Congrats to Simon!

Now this better make Options Video or something... otherwise there must be some crazy Japanese drivers already thinking of how to go and beat 02:11:18 in a Hachiroku or Silvia or somethin heheheh

I also wonder to what the total distance travelled would be hehehe this would definitely qualify as the world longest drift to me :)

John, I would imagine the video has to be checked inside out by MIRA before it can be released to the BBC or anyone else ?

I also think the WR stuff will make it to the Scoobynet CD.

A 66.8 mile power slide ... the more you think about it, the more amazing it gets.

johnfelstead
07-30-2001, 06:05 PM
hey Theo.

The MIRA guys were stood next to the Camera's for the whole time we were on site. I am pretty sure they OK'd them there and then, they certainly did with the still shots. The tapes went off site too i believe. I'll check with Si later.

We used 2 cameras, one static on top of the pumping house, about 20 foot up. The other was panning following the car. There should be some amazing shots.

It was quite amusing watching the MIRA giys literally a foot away from everywhere the camera's went. For those that dont know, getting a Camera inside MIRA is a huge achievement on its own. This is where the cars you and I will buy in 5 years time are tested. It's quite bizarre to see all the new models of Jaguar, Ford etc rolling around on the test tracks. I wish i could say what i saw but then i would be in some deep doo doo. ;)

I also believe the footage will be on the scoobynet CD. When i know for certain i will update you all.
