View Full Version : Removing tape from the roof

Near the beginning of the winter, my windshield got cracked and I had it replaced. Well they put the yellow tape on the windshield/roof that you're supposed to take off in 2 weeks or whatever. But I wasn't able to at that time because it was so freakin' cold and the tape froze to the car. Ok, so as the winter ended, I started slowly chipping away at the tape, and got all of it off the glass, but couldn't get all of it off the roof. What's left now just will not budge. I've washed it a dozen times and soaked it, oiled it, you name it, the remnants will not come off.

Any suggestions?

Use a rotary tool. Use a special fitting which is made out rubber. It's used to remove decals. Because it's rubber, no worry about scratching the car.

Yea, I tried WD-40. That got 75% off initially, but it's the stickier part on the bottom that won't come. I'll try the hairdryer.

Yea, I saw that Goo Gone at the hardware store the other day, and I was reading over its uses, and it didn't say anything about cars. It said like concrete, wood, steel, etc. but nothing about paint. I didn't know if it would hurt the paint or what.

Yeah, Goo Gone is safe for your paint. Also try heating the area up with a hair dryer, NOT a heat gun.

Subiegal, if this is the first time doing it, I'd still not recommend using a heat gun. By the time you see indications of a problem, it will be too late. The paint will be bubbled, cracked or deglossed. If you have done it before and know what heat settings, how long etc...it'll be fine. But experience is a harsh teacher, and best not to find out on your only ride...where there won't be race stickers to cover up a goof. That's all I'm saying, more care is better.

Definitely try the goo gone. It's mainly citrus oil, so it shouldn't hurt the finish. I used it to get the price tags off all the fine china when I got married. Basically soak the tape in it and let it sit for several minutes. It should just peel off. Wash your car to get rid of any remaining adhesive.

If that doesn't work, you might call the place that did the work and ask them the best way to get it off.
