Will they replace the manifolds and MAF? I just want to have an idea of how much work will be involved (or how much stuff can go wrong).
thanks,

View Full Version : Ugh, cracked engine block. Advice please. JNaubur 05-29-2001, 06:59 PM Will they replace the manifolds and MAF? I just want to have an idea of how much work will be involved (or how much stuff can go wrong). thanks, Jason Naubur Jessie James 05-29-2001, 09:12 PM I recall around here you can "ask for your old parts back." But an engine? Simple, go get some paint from a local store (bottle, little paint brush) and just put a dot here and there. One on the heads, one on the manifold, etc. Then when you get the car back, ask to see the old engine, and check the new engine for dots. You can then tell what was changed. Be inconspicous about the dots - keep them small and/or on bolts so it looks like threadlocker stuff. ChosenWon 05-29-2001, 09:31 PM RS25.com you sneaky bastard! I love it! Have you been watching too many X-files? But seriously, that is a great idea. I would do it. I have not found a dealer anywhere where I would trust them as far as I could throw 'em. EDIT: JNaubur, screw it. tell them you want a new one. Call SOA, Call the BBB, call the President. Do what it takes. This is rediculas for a new car. You are paying way too much on a new car to be having used car problems. For your trouble and convience they may upgrade you to a WRX wagon to get you car. And if they tell you it will be while before they can get you car, mention a rental or loaner. That will set himminging and hawing. That is when you bring up the topics of lawyers, and something like, "that is what I had to do last time...." Help them make YOUR desicion. Good luck either way you go. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/wink.gif [This message has been edited by ChosenWon (edited May 29, 2001).] JNaubur 05-30-2001, 01:53 AM If you happened to read my posts last week, I was leaking oil after 600kms in my 2.5 TS Wagon. They replaced the rear main seal. Still leaked. I brought it back and they thought it might be the block drain plug - it wasn't. They finally put some dye in the oil and found a hairline crack in the block - virtually invisible to the naked eye. So, they have been in contact with Subaru to see what can be done. No one has TS wagons in stock so there is some talk about replacing the engine. If they replace the whole engine, I shouldn't have anything to worry about, right? Right? Would they ever just replace the block and not tell me. I don't want a rebuilt engine, no disrespect to mechanics, but I don't think it would ever be like new. Do you? Thanks in advance, Jason Naubur ANZAC_1915 05-30-2001, 01:57 AM I'm pretty sure they'll give you a replacement short block (crank, rods, pistons already installed). I wouldn't be too concerned as long as they hook up everything correctly. Subaru has had block casting problems on and off over the years. Glenn jeffg 05-30-2001, 01:58 AM I would bet they will get the whole engine as a crate motor. At most you will use the same accessories, like AC compressor and alternator. I seriously doubt that the dealer will reuse anything he does not have to. If it is a concern, talk to them about it. Ask to see the old engine. If it is missing heads and stuff, then you know. Jeff JNaubur 05-30-2001, 07:47 PM Well if anyone cares about my new car saga. It seems to be coming to a happy ending. Well not perfect, but pretty good: The dealership has offered me a brand new car! All it took was a couple of phone calls, clearly stating what I expect. I didn't have to threaten or get pissed off. So now I have to wait all over again for my car to come in. A black one comes in next week, but we really like the blue. So I am now trying to secure a loaner car until then. Wish me luck. Jason Naubur PS. Kudos to Marino's Fine Cars in Toronto, and Subaru of Canada. Thanks for helping me out of my crisis!
