RC0310 06-14-2005, 02:51 AM nice #'s for EJ205!
olsaltybastard 06-14-2005, 06:20 AM So long as you're happy. Not bad numbers, either. Don't sell yourself too short.
WRX2FFU 06-14-2005, 08:26 AM ^^^^ I know. I am very happy with the tune. It feels very stong. I just see all these big power STi's and even the motor swapped WRX's wth rotated turbos putting down 400 +. I know that so far i have spent no where near the money, and my turbo is still pretty small but i like how it drives now. I just didn't want to get flamed for being too excited. I know this is a pretty basic set up but it will serve me fine for a while. Thanks for the comments guys.
Scoobs2002 06-14-2005, 12:32 PM Seems like a fun car to drive!
Happy that your happy :)

UM-WRXer 06-14-2005, 12:52 PM Looks good to me! Ive got similar power (267whp/245tq) on a 16g with top mount. This is on a dynodynamics. I love it as my daily driver!
mbiker97 06-14-2005, 01:19 PM Nice numbers on Dan's dyno. I'm sure it's a lot more fun to drive now.
kcook 06-14-2005, 01:59 PM damn i'd do anything to have ur setup once i get mine. btw how much was ur vf30 alone or did u buy them in a package sorta?

vf30, Bought it used off of here.
Sti Pinks& Walbro from Import Image new, Group buy here
TXS Topmount and utec New From Godspeed.
Probably could have gotten the pinks & walbro used, but oh well.
I really like it a lot, bad thing is, i can already see me wanting more down the road. I want to get it to the track and see what i can do with it first.
I need to get my brakes sorted out a little better first. Then maybe tranny.
I would highly recomend anyone to go to Godspeed. All of the staff and of course "Dan the man" were great to deal with. I know what ever i do next Dan will get my business.
skiblur 06-14-2005, 03:48 PM very very nice numbers on your setup. Remember that balls out power is not always best...nice to have, but at the sake of reliability and drivability. I have a similar setup to yours (VF28 txs topmount and ecutek) and am super happy with it. Taking into account the margin between the two dynos we were tuned on, your still making more power than me though, I envy you :) More than enough power to mess with 90% of cars on the street, a margin of error and reliability to boot. Just remember that the ej205 is not a good platform for making huge power. IMHO, you are at the edge of its effective range before reliability goes out the window. Now work on suspension and brakes to keep that speed up through the corners!

I agree with you. The only thing i may shoot for is some Water injection just to see what that can do. It is something i have been interested in for a while.
I have already upgraded the rear sway. I also have 17" rims and tein springs. With my mileage right now i think the next thing will be KYB agx struts. Followd by f/r upgraded endlinks, maybe some bushings, and upgraded rsb mount, also an alk for the front. I am just close to 30k so brake fluid needs changed and i'm going with ss lines and ebc green stuff pads. I absolutly think that the car is out of balance now and i need to turn my attenetion to the other aspects of the car. Like you said you have pretty much the same power as me so you know what i mean.
When Dan tuned it i made sure he knew i did not care what my peak power was, just that it was safe. I got the best of both worlds IMO.

That is the best way to do it.
yeager 06-14-2005, 05:21 PM nice numbers. that's sti country!
sometimes these big turbo setups are so awesome, we go and buy sensible daily drivers so we don't shoot ourselves. the vf series turbos can obviously put down some power and do it while retaining some semblance of driveability.
you are happy and satisifed, that is key.

Just curious as to why people are still buying WRX's and modding them now that the STi is out?
I realize that some people cant get approved to buy a $32,000 STi, but you can get used ones with 15k miles for ~$25,000.
I modified my 02 WRX way too much before the STi came out. So I'm stuck with mine, but it just surprises me that people are still modding the wrx.
I guess there are a million different situations where someone wouldnt be able to get the STi, but it seems like if you can afford to have a 04,05 WRX and put $4k+ into it then you could have just gotten an STi.
I'm not bashing anyone, I am just curious.
chase103 06-14-2005, 07:06 PM 4150 not installed or tuned........lotta money....i just bought my sti a few months ago, seemed like the better way to go....but diff strokes!

Good question. I got my 04' in sept of 03'. At that time there were no dealers in my area that had STi's. They said it would be 3 to 6 months. I could not wait that long. They did get 1 Sti in about 4 months later but by that time i already had 8k on my WRX and they wanted just over 35K for it. I got my 04' for 23,500otd. So you can see the difference in price. I also did not pay the ammounts you listed for any of the items. I did all the installs myself except for th utec. The only thing i did not do is tune it. All of that said. I wish i had an Sti. The power that i want would have been simple to make. It was just not in the cards at the time. BTW insurance was about 2000 more per year.
Oh yeah I forgot. IF you add up the rims and suspension and misc stuff i would say i have a total of about 7k in it.

I wasnt really talking about you. I figured you probably got yours in 03 as I got my 02 in 01.
I was referring more to the people who are bought 04's later and that are buying 05's and then dumping money into them.
Cause like I said used STis with low miles can be had for ~$25k.
Maybe some people gotta have the new car thing and I bet a lot of people dont know that used ones are that cheap.
It really urks me now that everyone who buys a new WRX is gonna have the 2.5 outta the box. I cant wait to see the full setups and what the trannies are going to be like.
Alpinestar 06-14-2005, 08:33 PM Hey does anybody know anyone on here who has had work on their STi at Godspeed?
-thanks alot.

Oh. OK. Sorry I guess i took it the wrong way. I do agree though. Anyone who can afford an STi now should definately do it. In fact i had a guy the other day ask me about it. He said should a i get an 02'-03' and dump a bunch of cash into it? Should i get an 04' sti used? or should i get a new WRX? I really just told him in my opinion that if he could find a nice decent mileage 04' STi he should go for it. It's really hard to tell what other people want especially with the new WRX(2.5). I almost said to try and find a beat up 02-03 wagon for dirt cheap and spend like 10 to 12k on it. Or a GC and do the same. That would be a lot of fun IMO. I really think if i did it again. THat is what i would do.

When i was there the other day there was a guy ther from dakota. He had a 20g i believe. It was super stout. I seem to remenber he was in the high 300's with race gas. I think?

Here is what I think abot it. I have an 04 WRX and when I bought it of course there was a STi there as well. I am a helicopter pilot and money was not the issue in the decision but here's what was. Either have an STi like the 5 others in this town for 33,000+ brand new and bone stock. Or get a WRX brand new and put some money in it to make it the way I want it. Wheels, body, engine, suspension. My wrx is stage 4 and has great handling. It does not look like every STi or WRX driving around. It has the things I wanted. So I decided to start with a clean piece of paper rather than a half finished piece of art. Would you rather drive a stage 4 wrx or a stock STi?
WRX2FFU 06-15-2005, 05:28 AM ^^^^ I would rather drive a stage 4 STi. :)
Phatron 06-15-2005, 02:14 PM Would you rather drive a stage 4 wrx or a stock STi?
I would rather have a stock STi hands down. With a stage 4 wrx its only a matter of time before your tranny goes. And if you drive it carefully to avoid breaking the tranny then whats the point of having that power if you're going to baby it. A stage 4 wrx is close to maxxing out the stock block too.
I would much rather have a STi that is capable of 500 whp on the stock block and stock tranny and the guys in puerto rico have over 700 ft*lbs on their stock Sti tranny right now.
Not to mention you get the HID's, dccd, avcs, brembos, etc. Its no contest in my opinion. I would rather get a used stock STi with 15k miles on it thats still under warranty than have a new WRX thats stage 4 with 1000 miles on it thats warranty is voided.
Plus being able to throw the power to the rear in the STi and bust a donut is just damn cool.

But you could have gotten a used STi for the same price as your brand new wrx. Then you could have made the STi the way you wanted it. Instead of starting with a clean piece of regular old paper, you could have started with a slightly used piece of shiny advanced high quality photo paper. ;)
skiblur 06-15-2005, 02:35 PM for younger drivers, insurance is a BIG deal on the sti. Enough we're talking 3-4k over a tenure of ownership (trust me, I know). I got my rex three years ago when we were still figuring out MBCs were bad. In retrospect, I could have sold my car and bought an sti with the money I have into it. There is something satisfying about being quicker than your average sti in a buyeye though...

My insurance is less on my WRX than it was on my Sentra SE-R. The sentra was in the sports car category because it was a 2 door.
Are you saying the insurance would be $3-4k more for an STi than a WRX? I cant imagine the STi would be but a couple hundred more a year for insurance than a WRX. I guess over 5-10 years it would add up, but your insurance should also be decreasing over time as the car gets older and if you dont have any traffic violations.
Yeah I love my bugeye too and i'm in the same boat. Put too much money into her and now I'm stuck with it. But I dont mind being "stuck" with something that traps 115 mph on 91 octane. ;)
I still like my bugeye better than any of the newer ones too. Especially the new grill setup on the 06.

I'm going a few hundred a year for the STi over the WRX is a bit of a understatement. My friend (27yo) got his WRX stolen and picked up an STi. His insurance went up $600.00 a year. I asked him if it wad cause the WRX was stolen, he said no they quoted him the same price as his old WRX for a new one.
And I agree, there is something about beating the big dawg STi with a bugeyes that puts a smile on my face.. Too bad I haven't done it myself.. :)

Thats crazy.
It doesnt make any sense to me.
How old was his WRX that got stolen? And did he get a brand new STi?
I could see that big of a difference coming from having an 02 WRX blue booking at $15k and going to a brand new $32k STi.
I wonder what the insurance difference would be on a brand new WRX compared to a used STi that sells for ~$24k?
I'm 27 and my wrx is less that $1k a year. I do get a 30% discount with Geico cause i work for the government, i have a multiple car discount and a good driver discount.
How much are you guys paying? I have been wanting to look into switching insurance companies, but i just figured geico would be the cheapest cause i get the government discount.
mbiker97 06-16-2005, 04:08 PM I'm 27 and my wrx is less that $1k a year.
I pay that much every 6 months just for the WRX, with the WRX as my secondary vehicle. ;) I'm 26. It doesn't really matter though as by changing my zip code by 20 miles changes my rates.
I've not gotten any STi quotes, but I've heard the rates have been going higher since more people have been totaling them and the ins. companies are finally figuring out what they are.
ride5000 06-16-2005, 05:25 PM one word:
WAGON
(plus bugeyes are so much better looking)
:)
TyranosaurusWRX 06-16-2005, 09:24 PM As far as insurance, I really think it comes down to the company and how they write the car up. When I was preparing to buy mine (July 02), I had a 97 Civic that I was ~75/mo. The same company wanted about 140/mo for the Suby because the WRX "had a perfomance engine because of the turbo." So I went elswhere and got it for 71/mo.....not to mention that it was used w/9k on it.
Edit: p.s. - Awesome on the car Todd!!! Can't wait to get it to Muncie.....mine as well :(
