I emailed my local subaru dealership about ordering some parts for my 30k mile maint. and this was the response

They redesigned some stuff for 2005 so your PVC valve and Fuel Filter are not serviceable. Here are the prices on the rest of the items...

Brake Fluid - $xxxx
Oil Filter - $xxxx/ea or we have cases & half cases on special.
Crush Ring - $xxxx or included in special.
Air Filter - $xxxx
Coolant - $xxxx (needs to be mixed)

We sell Subaru ATF but for manual transmissions the gear oil is aftermarket. You can find your preferred brand cheaper at your local auto parts store

Is this true??

the 2005 fuel filter was put in the tank instead of the engine bay, and yes it needs to be changed as for the PVC valve i dont know where it is right now and dont have the time to look it up but it MUST be servicalbe to.

I don't know if the 05 is the same. But on the 02-04 the PCV is right under the throttlebody. It screws into the intake manifold. You have to remove the IC to get to it.

This is just weird to me because when I think filter, I think something that gets clogged and needs to be relpaced...

Just spoke with ANOTHER dealer....
he spoke with his service manager and said that it indeed does need to be serviced, but that it is a 60,000 mile filter...
wow, what a pain in the butt to service that will be

Sounds like a question worth asking of SOA directly; email them and see. My guess is that there's a TSB on it. Unfortunately not all dealer personnel keep up on the TSBs...

Dear Mr. Watson:

Thank you for your e-mail inquiry regarding technical information on Subaru vehicles.

Because there are so many different Subaru vehicles on the road today (with an unlimited combination of options, etc.), we are not in a position to offer technical information via phone, mail or e-mail.

Your Subaru dealer would be in the best position to offer technical information regarding your vehicle, as he can perform a hands-on inspection and give you a more precise answer to your question. You may purchase genuine Subaru service manuals through your dealer or through our Publications Department at 1-866-428-2278.

We are sorry that we could not be of more assistance to you at this time. Best wishes!

Lana Gardner-Downs

uhhh... so basically, they were no help what so ever.
they told me to ask the dealers, when I have been asking them, and they dont know jack.

Mr. Watson:

I apologize if my response was not adequate. Your email indicated that you
wanted to service your vehicle on your own and therefore we suggested
purchasing a service manual. Yes, the service technician would be in the
best position to examine your vehicle and address your inquiries. However,
you have indicated that they have not. Here is the information that we
have.

The fuel filter for the 2005 models is in the fuel tank and is not
servicable. This is the first model year that all of our models are like
this. The 'Warranty and Maintenance' booklet is wrong. We have advised our
Publications department of this.

The PCV valve is non-servicable also, which is why it is not listed in the
'Warranty and Maintenance' booklet. It should only be replaced when it
fails.

Best Wishes!

Lana Gardner-Downs

wrote back to them telling them it wasnt what i wanted to hear, this is the response

The 'Warranty and Maintenance' booklet is wrong.

So what does that mean? What is the recommended maintenance interval for this thing?

the way they say it, never... since it is 'not serviceable'

Maybe the required service calls for the changing of the fuel pump .which the filter is connected to???? What is the fuel pump service ,maybe it has some info on the filter there?? Never have i heard of a life time fuel filter.

i didnt know they change all of that stuff on the 05

Subaru changed a few things on the 05 I cant think of them all now but my 2005 has a couple of aluminium(sp) bits in the rear suspension, and the parts numbers are differant for the gears and syncros in the tranny. Supposedly the are a little beefier but dont quote me on that.

it's a lifetime intank filter. AS long as you don't fill the car with diesel it'll never need to be replaced.

Honda has been running intank filters since '98 and we've never had a problem, don't let people tell you it HAS to be replaced.
