Ok, so I haven't heard that from any source (I just thought of it while watching said racing tonight), but doesn't it sound like a good idea? I can't imagine that the WRX wouldn't be competitive against the dominant BMWs and Type-Rs in this series, but one thing's for sure. It would be loads of fun to watch! Heck, I don't even know if the rules would permit a turbocharged AWD car, but I think Subaru could definitely mix it up with the big boys if allowed.

So considering the level of tuning of most of those cars why wouldn't the WRX be able to hang? I'd be willing to bet it would be able to run with the Audi's in the GT (i think) class...

Just my $.02...

I think the turbo cars have to run in the same class as the Vipers/Vettes and S4s. The TTs wouldn't be competitive since the mods allowed make 270hp. A guess, but the S4s are estimated at 350 to 380.

The 2.5RS could be compete in the TC events. Those cars run anywhere from the VW 4 cyl to the BMW I6. The 2.5 could stand some internal work to get 200hp and scoot around pretty well.

In comparo- the Metro VW Volkswagen Jetta makes 160-170hp and ran mid pack.

Didn't the new SCC talk about how they even out the cars depending on class? I remember reading how they strapa lot of weight to the Type-Rs so the BMWs can catch up since they weigh a lot more. Audi S4s are in the Challenge, so I don't know why they wouldn't allow a WRX. Bring on the Subarus!

Thing is that it is run on flat smooth race tracks. The Scooby's AWD will not have a big advantage compared to on bumpety roads. You see, once those 2WD cars' chassis are tuned, they woul run well on smooth racetracks. Besides, they would be alot lighter than AWD cars. It's the rules that governs how it's tuned.
In the case of BTCC, those cars racing in the series are heavy (Volvo, Mondeos etc....) that was why even with the penalty of an AWD system, the Audi wasn't alot heavier than its cometitors. Whereas a 2900lb RS would be alot heavier than 2500lbs Tiburons or Celicas.

No more Motorola Cup. It's been absorbed by the Grand Am series.

The A4s beat the snot out of the rest of the Touring Car series. AWD was the biggest part of that. AWD/FWD and RWD all had different weights but Audi overcame them to win. Only when AWD was banned or penalized with lead weights did they stumble.

Hot asphalt, dirt/rubber offline, broken track, oil and coolant on the surface are all common at races. Even 200hp, AWD will give the Subaru an advantage.

Weight is its own penalty-- but the drivetrain is low, not like driving a London DoubleDecker. Just from the cars I have seen prepped, the RS could weigh in around 2700 lbs if stripped, light wheels and a rollcage installed.

Someone settle this- build up an RS and meet me at Texas Motor Speedway March 3.

Why not, Sheehan is running one in the US Touring Car Championship. There are some threads in the motorsports section about it.
