So I went to advanced autoparts and got everything i needed for an oil change. However, I got the wrong filter.
I put on a Purolator 14162 filter on instead of a 14460 filter. I haven't driven the car much, but i don't feel like changing everything again. I searched and found that the filter i got was for a 2004 wrx; I have a 2002 wrx.

why would there be a difference between a 02 and 04 wrx anyways?

Hmmm...
Seems like there must be some stupidity in the air...

This thread should shed some light. The '02 and '04 filters are indeed different.

All 02 and 04 WRX should use the small filter (080 now 100 I think) instead of the big 060 filter. I've checked some application guide before (namely Mobil web site) and they recommend a big one for the 02 and a small one for the 04 up. That was wrong. Probably due to the fact that Subaru made the change after they released the car and didn't communicate well enough will aftermarket suppliers?
The reason the turbo cars use the small filter is because of the filter's clearance issue and using a smaller one will let it be farther away from the hot pipes around it.

^^ interesting...but i already changed the filter and very little oil came out.
The filter is extremely close to the exhaust manifold though...i think i'll take your advice next time
