View Full Version : 20G installed... OLF Crossover point SUPER RICH (UTEC)
GMTarkin 06-20-2005, 01:11 AM So, I got my 20G installed, still havent modded the injectors or gotten a intercooler yet, but it's running about 10psi right now, with a stage 2 basemap.
When I hit the crossover point something very odd happens though, the AFR goes super rich, I can tell because the car "floods" itself and pours a bunch of black smoke out of the exhaust. It did not do this with the stock turbo... What could this possibly be, and how can I fix it?
Once I get past the crossover point though (slowly), it'll pull to redline. Kind of odd.

Just wanted to update this a bit, any time before 5k rpm's if I hit full boost and over 50% throttle, it's as if I hit a rev limiter, which can be seen in the video.
Could this be overfueled? since I am running the stage 2 basemap, maybe the map is too rich below 5k? set for a turbo that would be spooled by then?
It's really odd to say the least. Once again, there is no knocking there, so I don't think it's too lean.

That's not how it works. The utec fuel map is based on load. This means that if ya run a certain boost, the utec will take a given fueling offset from the map for that boost. Your turbo just won't be getting fueling offsets from the higher boost ranges of the map at early rpms cause your turbo will never get to that boost at those rpms.
Is this on a wrx or sti? What are your other mods? What utec firmware version are you running, and are you using utecs olf mode? How to you hold the boost at 10psi? I've never heard of a 20g with such a low wastegate pressure......

I have the UTEC rev 4.2c, full turboback, uppipe (all catless) txs bov, perrin short ram intake and IC pipes, grounding mod, knife-edged throttlebody
This is a regular WRX
The boost map is set to "1" in all columns (to keep it low and safe) and this is working in conjunction with the ABC, just keeping the boost low and safe until I get my stuff together

I don't quite understand why the IDC section shows ---.- at some points... (usually the points where the anomalie occurs.)

I have 1 set to every column in my boost map, except the 0% column.
hmm, kind of like the wastegate spring wants it to close until 15psi, and the controller wants it to open earlier... and they fight, until maybe the boost gets high enough to the point where the spring doesnt have enough pressure to win against the solenoid. I'm not very knowledgable about how wastegates or the control solenoid works, but I think I have a relativly decent idea of it's operation. I could be way off on this. It would make sense though when the boost gets up past 11 or 12 or so, then it'll carry itself up to redline
Your IDC column is showing ---.-- because your maxing your injectors out. If I'm wrong, I'm sure someone will correct me, but if you look at your IDC before the sections showing ---.--, you'll see your injectors flowing ~97% and higher.
Even at 10 PSI, the 20G is flowing a lot more air than the stock turbo. If you're going to mod your stock injectors or buy bigger, you need to do it ASAP.

I've looked at the job a bit and I think I can handle it now, it looked like a big bitch, but it doesnt seem too bad anymore, and I'm no longer dreading it, but it definatly wolnt happen tonight as I pick up my copy of Battlefield 2 after work, and that's gonna suck up my time, heh.
Maybe I'll get to it tonight, but probably weds. I'm just wondering why it's doing that odd burbling/stuttering/hesitating thing. But I'm almost dead-set on it being the wastegate solenoid and spring fighting each other.

I asked for help, not to be bitched out, I said the injectors are coming, but people refuse to see that. I KNOW. It's being taken care of, I just want to know why it's doing what it is, and if it could be because of the injectors, or what else it could possibly be.
serendipity 06-21-2005, 03:28 PM I would fix the injectors first since they're *definitely* a problem.
I can't watch the vid since I'm at work, so I can't really offer any advice as to what the sound is. It does sound like misfires though, which can be caused by running super-rich. Or a bad coil pack. Or a marginal spark plug. Or a boost leak.
Do you have access to a wideband?

Does a misfire throw a code? because I scanned my codes the other day and had nothing in there about a misfire.

#1. I wouldn't mess with fuelling unless I had a wideband
#2. Put injectors on before turbo, not the other way around
#3. Don't ask for help uless you can take some constructive criticism

hippy 06-21-2005, 03:55 PM How sure are you that you have 4.2c and not just 4.2? It's kinda hard to tell if you're never seen a 4.2c screen because with 4.2 there is still a (c) after it which is a copywrite thingy. There was a problem with 4.2 that when the injectors maxed out, sometimes it would create a misfiring condition. This would explain all the black smoke. Do you get any misfire ce codes? I would also guess that you're running pretty rich since I've seen stage 2 wrx's run maf voltages of 4.2 and not max out their injectors, but your injectors seem to be maxin out at 4.1......
