View Full Version : I concede the Sport Wagon forum, but....

I think as an alternative, this is a good forum to get together in.

The WRX wagon owners have a whole different set of needs than we do. I know there are some who will be rallying their wagons, but many of the WRX mods do not apply here, not in the engine compartment or throughout the driveline, or suspension.

Because I am retiring this year, and bought my wagon as a touring car, rather than to race, or mod with usless gee-gaws, my questions do not belong in an RS or WRX forum, a thing I have been made very aware of by those who frequent those forums.

I think that 165-200 hp is enough for a car of this size and weight especially if it isn't going to be raced. I would like to modestly modify my wagon to get close to that 200 hp wall, and with upgraded wheels and tires and that is about it.

I do feel that there is a contingent posting on this board who have nothing to say and make up for it with ridicule and $mart A$$ remarks in place of helpful answers. I wonder how many have been driven away by these immature jerks?

Anyway, I think wagon owners should get to know each other better so let me start it out.

46-yeah, almost an old fart but don't feel like it
2002 OBS (traded my 2000 OBS in April for this one)
Homeschooler of a 16 year old, great violinist, budding mechanic (go figure that)
Mother of successful independent homeowning 26-year old son
Married almost 29 years
Former medical transcriptionist
Something like 5'2", 125 lb.
Born BEFORE Vietnam war

I agree with you, Phil, about not needing more than a certain amount of horsepower just to drive around with. I have a Ganzflow intake and it just puts a little edge to the upper end power to give you nice boost when passing, etc... I love the stock wheels on the 2002 OBS so don't need to buy others, and will look forward to replacing these tires when they wear out.

Love the car, drives like a dream. Test drove a new Miata today for fun and probably because it's small, was just not at smoooooth as my OBS. Still, an adventure....

Hello, Sean here! My handle is my middle name and first initial.

I'm 27 an am a Web Marketing and Content Manager for a university in Columbus, OH.

I'll be getting my Master's in Marketing and Communication this Sunday.

I'm half Irish, half Italian....I just eat and drink a lot and sometimes argue with myself.

I think I was one of the first group of members of the Yahoo! Outback Sport Owner's Club.

My '98 Glacier White OBS now has 77,000 miles on it. Except for a squeak I can't seem to get rid of, I love it as much as the day I drove her off the showroom floor at Hatfield Subaru.

Mods? Not many...I'm broke and am trying to save up money for a wedding. Anyone want to contribute?? Ha ha.

As soon as the new STX comes out, I'll probably no longer be a wagon owner. That pickup truck bed is just too tempting. The bed is perfect for a mountain biker/camper/homeowner.

Later,
Sean

I received my (4th allocation) silver 5 sp WRX wagon on 6 June; the Tire Rack sent my 17" SSRs/225/45/17PP SO 3s on 13 July, and I had the windows tinted on Tuesday @ Pro Tint/LLumar Platinum Plus. The tinting shop owner has a first allocation white WRX sedan. I could not be happier!
The local dealers are wonderful: they "gave" me two free oil/filter changes, and a two year free maintenance contract.
Subaru has a hard sell here in the DFW metroplex as Pickups, SUVs, and BIG BMWs, LEXI, and MBs are the social standards.
The current Roundel (BMW's monthly mag) states that of the 70 MINI franchises awarded in the USA, NONE are in Texas!
BTW, I am 56 and served from '68 -'78 in the active forces of the USN - full time 5/'70-7/'78 LCDR,MC,USNR (former head, Nuclear Medicine, and (Nuclear) black ops, NRMC, San Diego, CA)

Hi my name is Chris also and my last drink was jan 1 2001. Oh wait wrong forum.

2002 MBP WRX wagon. Don’t think I’ll wind up doing much to it cause I want to auto-x it once its broken in. I will be doing tint in a bit and get some new street rims but other than that not much.

As for me im 6.3, dark hair blue eyes. I’m a software developer in a small company in the pacific northwest. I like lying by the beach and long walks on the fire. Or is that the other way around?

Hi, I'm Steve.
I'm 37, I-talian, and occassionally say "yo."
Grew up near Philly, but hang in Delaware these days.
I'm 5'8", 160 lbs.
I'm a chemist that works with computers more than test-tubes.

Been driving Scoobies for 4 years, and ~70K miles, and can finally throttle steer by feeling weight shifts in my butt.
I love driving my Scoobie in the rain.:D

Handle is DuneHopper, because I take my white MY00 OBS onto the beach, where I hear brilliant questions like, "Did you drive that out here?"
A white car stays cooler in the sun than silver.
Got a wagon to haul my band equipment.

I wanted a to trade for a TS wagon, but my soon-to-be-ex screwed my credit, so I'm stuck with a 2.2L, soft clutch and brake pedals, and tiny fog light holes.
I'm dreaming of a coil-over suspension to *raise* my car when needed. Better yet, an electrically controlled helper spring system like that which is available for pickups.

My girlfriend finally agreed that Scoobies are kewl when we were the only non-pickup truck to not get stuck in the mud at an outdoor concert. All the bikers on the hill cheered.

I think us wagoneers are into Scoobie versatility, and should share ideas.

Sorry Phil I meant to tell you how nice your car looks with that blue. It's the first I've ever seen in that color and quite impressive. Those Team Dynamics Motorsports in silver with gold center caps would look sweeeeeet........

By the way, if you wanted 16" wheels you could buy the stock 2002 OBS wheels. Mine are just the stock wheels that came on the car!!

Good idea! I checked out the price of WRX 16" alloys and they are $474 for the set of four, uninstalled. With tax $512 or $128 each. Hard to go wrong with that.

Hi fungo phil (and everyone),

I drive a 2002 TS Sport Wagon that looks *exactly* like yours right down to the roof rack crossbars and mudflaps. Okay, except for that little bit of pinstriping along the side (and mine's an automatic). I think we are of the same mindset. I plan to upgrade the wheels to Raceline RL7s with Toyo tires, and I might just leave it at that.

As much as I adore the WRX, I'm grateful to see some talk of the sport wagons.

Oh yeah, and I was born before the, um...Gulf War?

Phil, did you check on the price of the OBS wheels? When I first posted pics of my car a few months ago I had several of the WRX owners tell me they liked them better than the WRX wheels!

DuneHopper
08-09-2001, 12:28 PM
Cindy H, I got 16" Raceline RL-7's a couple years ago because they were the best durability/price combo at the time, and I still like them a lot. However, for example, now you can get stock WRX wheels for about $500 a set; nice wheels and considerably cheaper. Also, you may want a bigger rear sway bar to go with those new wheels/tires. Cheap, and makes a huge difference in handling.

fungo phil
08-10-2001, 12:20 PM
No I didn't check the price of OBS wheels. I will, but they are probably equivalent, or at least very close in price to the WRX wheels.
