Since the past weekend, my speedometer has been freaking out.
Under 20 mph, the needle bounces around from 0 to around 30 mph. It does it when accelerating to 20 or decelerating from above 20. When above 20 mph, the speedo appears to operate normally.
Has anyone had/heard about a problem like this. If so, is there a solution?
Thanks
Steve

Well mine has been doing that for about a year now......i don't think there's a cable to lube our speedo is ran electronicly, somehow? I haven't gottin it taken care of, out of lazyness but i've talked to other people when it first happend and they said the dealer is the only one for the fix....?

Yeah, I believe the speedometer works by measuring the ammount of resistance on a wire. Bad speed sensor, maybe? Yeah, you'll probably have to take it to a dealer, or at least a certified Subaru mechanic.

I believe the speedo works on a vehicle speed sensor (a tone wheel, or hall effect sensor). You probably have a bad sensor or maybe the tone wheel is funked up with magnetic material...

I assume you are talking about your 1995 Legacy LS which is in your profile, so I suggested the cable because I believe 1995 was the last year of the cable. I have a 95 Impreza with the same problem before I had it lubed at the dealer. I think the speed sensor thingie was introduced in 96. Just trying to help out :)

I was hoping it would be something as simple as lubing the cable, but the shop manual says it's electronic. I guess I have to look for a "speed sensor #2", and see if that helps.
thanks all,
