I want to purchase a short-throw shifter real badly, but I don't know which one to get. I heard both are very good. Which is better though?

Pros?
Cons?

Also, how much does it cost to install a STI short-throw shifter? Is it easy enough for someone to do in their home garage? Thanks for any input.

Dunno about the STi shifter. I installed the Kartboy last week, and it's great. (Great service, too! Thanks Tom!)

I have noticed a slight buzz in 3rd, but it doesn't really bother me.

I think Subaru's short throw includes the whole linkage- anyone know why that is?

The linkage is to keep the shifter at the same hight...and still get the short throws...

I drove two cars. One with a Kartboy and one with a STi before I made my disition.

I put the Kartboy in mine. Not because it was cheaper it just felt better to me. It was just an added bonus that it was cheaper.

If you don't mind fixing the rattle yourself then buy the Kartboy. It works great and the lower height doesn't bother me at all. The only problem with after market short shifters, and probably the reason why Subaru offers the whole assembly, is that they are more prone to rattle. In my car I found tha cause to be the metal sleeve that holds the shifter in place. It does not align properly with the shift-rod and thus rattles. I found a fix that works well, but it requires a little modification to the shifter.

You'll definitely like the feel of a short shifter once you have tried it!

I felt both, and went with the STi for my WRX wagon, but with the Kartboy bushings. I just feel that the STi is a lot smoother and less "notchy," presuming you don't believe notchiness to be a bad thing. I don't. It's simply a matter of taste.

The throws on the STi are pretty close to perfect in terms of balance with the syncros in the gearbox, that is, you can shift quickly because it doesn't shorten everything so much that it feels funny, almost like a video game. Some love that feeling, though.

Both are really nice shifters, and the KB is half the price of the STi. I have heard that the linkage is the same as stock except for the fancy gold anodizing. Don't know if that's true or not, but we put the whole shebang in the car.

I went with the Kartboy, the STi seems to sit as tall as stock, and the shifts seem just a bit shorter than stock. Kartboy sits shorter than STi and also seems to shift shorter, and a bit notchy, but that's what I prefer.
