View Full Version : STI HIDS on WRX - Plug & Play?
Remnex 07-08-2005, 05:55 PM Dudes,
I did a search but was unable to come up with anything solid. I have a set of 04 STI HIDS and I want to place them in my 05 WRX, but I notice an extra connector.
Is there something I am missing. Also, do I need the leveling switch?
I am browsing scoobymods.com to look for any information and have come up dry.
Thanks!

Ok. I am finding several old threads that are helping.
Thanks dude.

I installed the STi HID headlights into my 2004 WRX a few weeks back. The installation is very easy. Sorry, but I did not take pictures of the install. It is very straight-forward. I assume that you know how to remove & replace the headlights, so I won't go into that. I also assume that you know how to use a soldering gun/heat shrink tubing, etc.
The standard disclaimer applies - This is what I did on my car. You should verify everything before performing this modification. I am not responsible for any damage or problems associated with this modification. Consult the service manual wiring diagrams WI-135 and WI-138.
By the way, the 2004 STi headlights are different from the standard WRX lights. The reflectors and bulb shields are different. I had a Catz HID kit on my car before switching to the STi lights. The Catz HIDs put out more light, but the beam pattern was not very good. The STi lights have an excellent beam pattern.
Here's what I did:
1) Disable the DRLs by disconnecting the DRL module behind the glove box. This is important.
2)On each headlight, there is a short pigtail lead that goes from the ballast to a black 2-prong plug. Remove these black plugs. You will then have one red and one black wire coming out of each ballast. The red are your positive leads and the black are the negative (ground) leads.
3) Solder a 18"-24" length of black wire onto each of the the existing black wires an put a ring terminal on the end of each.
4) LEFT HEADLIGHT (driver's side): Cut off the existing grey plug that plugged into your low beams and remove a few inches of the black protective tubing. You will have a yellow/red wire and a red/blue wire. Cap off the yellow/red wire - you will not be using it. Ensure that the red/blue wire is positive and is energized when the headlight switch is in the on position. Solder the red/blue wire to the red wire coming out of the ballast. Use heat shrink to weatherproof the connection. Take the black wire with the ring terminal on the end and attach it to the ground point next to the battery.
4) RIGHT HEADLIGHT (passenger's side): Cut off the existing grey plug that plugged into your low beams and remove a few inches of the black protective tubing. You will have a yellow/red wire and a blue/white wire. Cap off the yellow/red wire - you will not be using it. Ensure that the blue/white wire is positive and is energized when the headlight switch is in the on position. Solder the blue/white wire to the red wire coming out of the ballast. Use heat shrink to weatherproof the connection. Take the black wire with the ring terminal on the end and attach it to the ground point next to the air box.
5) Plug in the high beams and clearance/signal lights on both sides.
6) Properly aim the lights.
7) Enjoy your HID lights.
wagons_ho! 07-23-2005, 03:38 PM You can cut and splice, or plug and play. If ever you want to go back to stock, it's easier to unplug and play rather than to find the connectors you've chopped off and re-attach them. I plug and play....

Simple plug and play on a 2004 WRX with the DRL's disabled works fine for 2004 STi headlamps?
rallyken 07-25-2006, 10:19 AM I would get a Pnp harness actually im trying to get a Pnp harness i pmed wagonsHo and he hasnt replied yet i really dont want to hack the back of my headlights but 750$ keeps looking at me and its getting annoying.
wagons_ho! 07-25-2006, 10:57 PM I live on the road for 120 days a year for work... be patient.. I've not died or run off the planet. I'm probably camping on an island somewhere for a week at work...

It will work fine, but it's not exactly good for your stock wiring harness.
Here's why. Image from my STi headlamp conversion harness.

The WRX headlight wires are 20ga and the STi ballast wires are 16ga. HID ballasts use a lot of power during startup which is the reason for using larger wires in HID setups.

Empty your PM's please!!!!!!
wagons_ho! 08-01-2006, 01:34 AM Email me.... there's an option that works best. If I'm travelling for work, or at work, I can't reply to PMs under threat of termination. Email, however, works.
wagons_ho! 08-01-2006, 01:35 AM When they buy HID headlamps, most people aren't lucky enough to get the proper female plug that works with the light... you're lucky.
hybrid gti 2 08-01-2006, 03:29 AM I have his kit and it's the best work around. Worth the wait. I waited 3 months. Sending a freind his way also :)
what is wagonho's email address? anyone?
TommyWRX 08-01-2006, 03:19 PM If by unpluging the DRL plug behind the glove box, does that affect anything else?
wagons_ho! 08-01-2006, 06:06 PM Left click on my wagons_ho! in the left window, and there's a whole bunch of options...

no it only disables the lights for day time other wise they will be on with a lower voltage.
