View Full Version : Kartboy Short Throw Shifter Can Wait
Psi-Fire 08-09-2001, 02:33 PM I installed my short throw shifter yesterday, it doesn't seem like the throw is that much shorter. It is noticable but not what I expected, I think I could have waited on this mod and got something else instead.
Though to be fair, I am waiting until the weekend to put in the Kartboy bushings, but my main complaint is the length of the throw, not the feel of the shifts.
What do the rest of you think about it?
IMPREZIV 08-09-2001, 02:48 PM I had just the shifter in my RS and I noticed a big difference. To each his own. I love my Kartbiy shifter, and it was the first mod I did to my RS and my WRX.

westy66 08-09-2001, 03:18 PM hey Psi...

swang 08-09-2001, 08:50 PM i must echo the sentiments of the vast majority of those who happily row the kartboy shifter in their wrx's: i LOVE my kartboy shifter!
the long and mushy throws of the stock wrx shifter was the first thing that i wanted to remedy after trading in my miata for the wrx. the miata stick was short, precise, and wonderfully mechanical feeling. the stock wrx stick was the complete opposite. now, the kartboy shifter and bushings have transformed the wrx shifting experience to the same level as my old miata. i'm sorry i didn't do the mod sooner.
Idjiit 08-09-2001, 11:57 PM I've had my kartboy for about 5k miles. I drove in a friend's WRX with the stock shifter in it and felt like I was driving a frickin' semi. I loooove my kartboy. And yes, the bushings make a big diff.
trhoppe 08-10-2001, 10:10 AM Don't knock the shifter until you put it in with the bushings
Herbie 08-10-2001, 11:43 AM At the risk of wasting bandwidth by saying the same things again and again, I too will chime in that I LOVE my kartboy shifter.
I had just the shifter in my MY98 RS, and it was pretty cool, but with my WRX I've got the shifter and bushings, and its an even more significant improvement.
Due to the location of the shifter relative to the tranny, you're never going to get a super-duper short throw unless you REALLY alter the geometry. In a Miata everythings a lot closer together, thats why their shifters are so awesome.
Just my $0.02
WRXWES 08-10-2001, 12:00 PM Is there a difference in the kartboy shifter vs STI shifter?
Wes
joefong 08-10-2001, 12:04 PM the kartboy shifter is shorter than the sti...the sti is about the same height as stock

Wes, there's a big difference. The STi unit is basically a stock linkage unit with a slightly shorter throw. The Kartboy is shorter and the TRiTuning shifter is the shortest available (nearly 50% shorter) right now.

Psi-Fire 08-11-2001, 08:01 PM Ok, the bushings are in and there is a definite difference. The throw is still not as short as I thought it would be... but to clarify, my point of reference is the OEM shifter. From what I've read, Kartboy is as good as they come so don't take this as a recommendation to buy a different short shifter.
Next move will be to put a different tranny fluid in, I hear redline makes a good fluid, can someone recommend one for my WRX?
westy66,
Thanks for offering to buy, but I think I'll keep this mod.

powertothepedal 08-12-2001, 03:20 PM I'm deciding on which shifter to install. Can anyone tell me the difference between the Kartboy and Cobb shifter?
thanks!
