I am currently in a town in the middle of the Mojave desert where it is 120. I am from WA where my oil temps see anywhere from 180-200. Now, I am seeing temps of 215-235 with just normal driving. I am running Mobil 1 5w30 and was curious if anyone was running anything a bit thicker and if that was helping with oil temps. Thanks in advance for the help!

Reading the stickies in the CORRECT FORUM for this type of question really, really helps!

Here's a hint before I move it: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=499177

It is acceptable to use 10w30, especially in warm climates like yours. You might also do good with a supplemental oil cooler and perhaps a shorter duration between changes.

My 2000 Forester manual sugests for(desert temperatures) to go up in vis to a straight 30 or 40 wt. oil. I see no difference or advantage to using a 10w30 vis a 5w30 as the hi temp. viscosity is the same. because of your increased oil temperaturBI would look at Mobil 1 5w40 at walmart for $20/5 quarts.

The Mobil 1 10W-40 Extended Performance seems like a good hot weather choice for an oil that meets the owner's manual specification. It has a significantly higher 40C and 100C viscosity than the regular 10W-30 Mobil 1. I plan to use this oil for my next summer change.

Here is some comparison info from the Mobil 1 web site:

(Mobil 1): 5W-40 T&S / 10W-30 EP / 10W-30 / 10W-40 EP
Visc. 40 C: 102 / 66.6 / 62 / 91.1
Visc. 100 C: 14.8 / 10.5 / 10 / 14.2
POUR C: -45 / -54 / -45 / -42

Main problem is that the M1 10w-40 EP is virtually non-existant in many parts of the country. I don't know what Mobil's problem is with distributing this oil, but it's almost as if it doesn't exist outside of their web site.

I hear ya. I went to buy some and could not find it either. I guess I'll stick with the M1 10W-30.
