Well, not sure if this is the right forum, but I don't want to cross post and this seems like the best place. I have a Forester XT and have been searching for the right oil. Been using Mobil1 5w30 since 3-4k miles, 36k now. It just seems that the Mobil1 like to burn away. I lose maybe 1 quart per 4kmiles and know this is ok, but I have also heard that Mobil1 is prone to this and that other oils do better.

I did alot of research here: http://theoildrop.server101.com/cgi/ultimatebb.cgi

It seems that Shaeffer's Supreme 7000 oil is fantastic. UOA's are universaly great, show better wear than most oils, and is a semi-syn that is much cheaper than full-synthetics. Also has lots of moly to plate and really prevent wear. Sounds fantastic.

My only complaint is that I can't find where to buy it. That is my question. Have any of you seen it and where can I get a good supply? Thanks!

I've been researching on that site too and I also consume more oil than I like. I was recommended the Mobil1 Truck and Suv 5w40. Its fully synthetic and shouldn't burn off as easy, especially in modified cars. Going to try it on my next change. $20 at Wal-mart for 5 quart jug.

My backup is what the guys at Oildrop consider the oil of the Gods for Turbo cars: German Castrol Syntec. It is 0w30, but is almost a 40 weight, does not shear. Take a look for yourself.

$25 for 5 quarts at AutoZone, my Walmart just went up to $22.88 on the M1 jugs, so price is pretty much the same now.

Supposedly the German Castrol is only available in 0w30, is approved for Porches etc, and says Made in Germany on the back of the bottle.

I believe that you can only get Schaeffer's from a distributor, like Amsoil.

I'm using the GC in my XT and had a good UOA (http://theoildrop.server101.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=3;t=002423). Note that my wear metals are just getting down to normal (though still a tad high). Maybe because I switched to full synthetic a tad early (7.5k miles).

I thought of trying the M1 5W40 for summer, but I drive less than five miles each way on weekdays. I wanted something thinner for the short trips.

Did you have an oil consumption problem before that was solved by using German Castrol?

I don't really think I had a problem, per se although I usually added 1/2 to 1 quart every 3k miles or so. I used M1 5W30 last summer in my FXT for 5,700 miles and got a knocking noise when I started it up one day after the car sat for three days while on vacation in SC (100F). It could've been a cambelt tensioner, but I think it also could've been that the oil was thin.

My UOA showed the viscosity on the M1 was 57.8 SUS, or 9.58 cst's (9.3 cst's is the minimum for a 30 weight). For peace of mind, I went with the GC. The viscosity after similar mileage during the winter was 64.8 (close to a 40 weight).

I just returned from a week in SC and a week in Ocean City, MD. Both places were mid 90's to 100F and stop and go traffic. My oil level is down maybe a few ounces and no knocking noises. :)

Good info, I will use this for my next change. Local Autozone carries it, so availability is no problem. I think Mobil1 protects the engine fine, I just believe that the M1 5w30 can thin a bit and have a little blow-by problem at high RPM. Thicker GC will fit the bill, and costs no more. The better viscosity is great.
