i should add that it was owned by a girl that added a boost gauge, intake, complete exhaust, blow off valve and other things i dunno for sure.

I just dont know what to think of it, if she pushed it hard or not. I'm getting the test results from the dealer and i wanna compare.

half of the mods sounds like she isnt too experienced with mods on a subaru. i'd be a little scared but if it checks out buy it. price sounds a bit high.

......and stealerships LIE-LIE-LIE about everything....really.....unless you actually KNOW the previous owner....it is a lie what tehy tell you.

18k can get you a rs but not wrx. it can get you a used wrx but the bug eyes are hard to find that are in decent shape.

22k??? I got my new 04 wrx for that much. Even 17500 sounds a bit high too. I wouldnt buy a used wrx ever. I would be afraid of that person not maintaining and drag racing the crap out of it.

ive got to agree w/ everyone, i used to sell subies and about 90% of used wrxs are turds..... even if the original owner didnt beat the hell out of it the workers and service department did. i cant tell you how many times ive seen 4 wheel drifts out of the dealership parking lot at 7 am!

wow... thx to all for the imput, i never thought of it that way, sure I thought the prev owner would have raced it, but i also thought maybe because of that reason, the car would have been maintained well and serviced appropiately. I told them of my concerns (the car is in service as it was just trade in by the prev. owner) and now they went down to $15000 and assure the car is in good condition and offer me the compression test results as well as anythiing I request, do you guys know what they are per cylinder for a new 02 wrx so i can compare... I do really need to get rid of my 99 cavalier z24 120k. :(

sorry but dont know any of the numbers.

but since the 06 are coming you might be able to hag with the dealers for a cheap wrx. but personally i take a 02-03 over 04-05. love the bugeyes.

when people drive hard on their cars, even if they treat it qith quality fluids and matience its still not going to be as reliable as if you were to put the cheapest fluid and drive it granny slow.

just make sure that anything they promise or tell you, that you have in writing and w/ signatures on your copies, because if something happens to go wrong your SOL. any time my lot sold a car w/ mods they would promise to care of any problems, but they were positive the car is in perfect running order.....then when the smallest thing came up its blamed on the customers abuse, or even saying that you have added parts and that the car wasnt modified to that level at purchase. words mean nothing if its not in writing, and their your best buddy till you roll off the lot.

well hopefully when you buy any car, used or new off the lot, they should come with warranty. isnt that the pros against buying it from a private seller, you get warranty from the dealer. have you tried looking through the forums, theyres cheaper 02 rexs here that i trust more than the one you posted.

You should look at buying from an individual. Look for cars that are completely stock - not even a catback. Bring along someone who knows about modified WRXs.

It is pretty easy to tell if the car has been modified even if they put it back to stock. Look for marks on the downpipe nuts, hacked up back part of the turbo heatshield, slit cut in the heatshield in front of the o2 sensor (a lot of people do this to make it easier to take it off during uppipe install), missing uppipe EGT sensor, scratches/marks on crossmember near uppipe.

Then you have to size up the person. Do they have any records? If they have none, walk away. Ask them how often the oil got changed and where and what kind of oil. If they stumble, then walk away. Act like your really interested in speed. Ask them "how fast will she run"? and "whats the best way to launch this car". If they start going off about 5000 rpm clutch drops and 140 on the freeway - walk away.

a warranty from the dealer means absolutely nothing for the majority of wrx owners, they deny many repairs that should be covered. even on stock a stock car your gonna catch **** because a suby is supposed to run great for 300K and if there is a problem w/ it, then you are the cause.....therefore its your problem.

I'd be more worried about the tranny than the compression test. No easy way to tell if that's been abused and getting them fixed under warranty is difficult.

There was a guy in this area that regularly drag raced his car then sold it through his Dad, so it looked like a responsible guy owned it.

Like everyone said, be careful.
