View Full Version : Autocross Report
Red-Impreza 08-12-2001, 05:34 AM On this course, we all learned a lot more about the meaning of the word "slalom". How many cones did this one have, guys? Eight? Nine? It was almost the entire length of the back half of the course. Many, many people spun clear around (even one of our own). Very challenging and lots of fun.
Once again, we had a really good Subaru turn out and everybody ran really well. I had a strong night, improving from over 40 seconds (and a little out of control) to 36.8-something on my last run. Unfortunatly, if wasn't quite strong enough. Mike beat me by almost a second (was it 46.1-something?). Well done, congrats. He was about 1-to-1/2 second ahead of me all night. Nice driving, dude. The big question now, is how do the points fall out for the season. It's gonna' be close. :D Oh, and Mr. Meyers wasn't there, so I might just be me and Mike in 1 & 2 again.
However, the real story of the night was Mr. JEddy. I don't remember his time, but he might have beat me and Mike both. I saw he was running some Falcons instead of the RE92's, but I didn't get a chance to congratulate him on his runs. He just kept getting faster and faster. Bad news for Ron and the other NV3 guys, but some very impressive driving for somebody running in his novice seaon. Very well done! This fall is going to be very interesting. He just might be the man to beat.
All in all I had a blast. Good racing and good company.
-Bud
Eric SS 08-12-2001, 06:25 AM Man! I'd better get the Subby up and runnign again pretty soon or I will have to bring the 90" cougar LS (aka Boat) out there and show ya'll what;s up :) :)
Eric
Hey Bud(dy),
It was seven; I had a good view of the first five as I rolled backwards past the 6th...
I was pleased with my 39.7, especially after the earlier autobatics.
Jeddy definitely kicked some, but it's the last time he's in novice. He's first in AZBR Novice, I believe he told me.
Also think that H1 clinched Novice 2. If so, congrats!

Red-Impreza 08-12-2001, 03:30 PM Oh yeah! We can't forget Dave. Congrats! Very well done!
We've had some great racing in this little summer season; back and forth, neck in neck, with plenty of excellent all wheel driving. It just doesn't get any better then that!
dubdrvrkev 08-12-2001, 03:58 PM Well I must admit you scooby guys always have a good showing at the auto-x. I just wanted to congadulate Mike and Bud for possibly taking STS in the top two, and David for probably taking NV2. All of you guys put in great driving, I also liked how Bud said all of his fans were #1 when he was at the starting line;) .
jeddy 08-12-2001, 05:20 PM *pokes his head out sheepishly*
Thanks, i had a good time, though i'm exhausted today. I was hauling rocks all morning in Tucson, and helped set up the course. It was a long drive up and back, but worth it, as always. =]
I must say, that course was fun, but short. I don't think i ever drove the slalom quite fast enough though, i always chickened out near the last two cones. I managed to get into the ABS in a few spots on the backside though. My fastest was 36.385. Mark (the timing light killer) managed to beat me by .08 on his last run.
I also have some in-car footage that should be online next week, as soon as i get my connection fixed up (new dsl modem). There's also some (poor) footage of a certain green civic attacking a timing light (that'd be my brother). I warned him that the end of the slalom seemed a little tight, hehe.
Those Falken Azenis tires are, um, awesome. They stick about 100% better than the RE92s. It's not as "exciting" to drive, no sliding around, but that seems to be a Good Thing. ;] I don't have anything but RE92s to compare them to unfortunately. I got mine from vulcantire.com, $84 for the 205/55-16. They're much wider than the RE92s, even though they claim to be the same size. I can't fit my pinkie between the rear tires and the spring perch.
Having to drive back home meant that i didn't get to stay to see everyone else run, though i did watch the first set of group D. Sounds like it was a good showing by everyone though. Woo!
Great racing last night guys, I think we all have something to be proud of this season, and the AZ SCCA is sitting up and taking notice of the Scoobies!
So, I did a quick bit of math, and based on the times I walked away with, and my understanding of the PAX system.
The Huffman Elan had the best PAX time (31.968*0.852)=27.237seconds - so that is the benchmark (1000 PAX pts) the way they seem to do it at azsolo2.com.
NV2
H1 PAXpts 27.237/(38.581*0.789)=895 PAX pts
Lotus PAXpts 27.237/(38.896*0.813) = 861
Civic PAXpts 27.237/(29.516*0.781) = 883
NV2 Total best 2 of 3
H1 = 1794
Civic = 1775
Lotus = 1774
So I think I did enough last night.
I also worked out the Mike/Bud times and points too, but I don't want to post them incase my math is flawed, and I don't have the times of the other STS guys in competition to be able to tell if you guys took 1st and 2nd.
Also Ron's run might be good enough that we took 1st and 2nd in NV3 (Jeddy + #522)
(In a Cartman voice) "Kickass!"
:D Dave
Red-Impreza 08-12-2001, 06:02 PM So jeddy,
What was that brother of yours' best time? I do believe he could be the spoiler in STS. He edged me in time and tied me in points last event.
There's also Rock and Peters. Rock has 1898 (958+940) in the first two and Peters had 955 in the first event. Does anybody know if they were there last night?
STS is going to be a close as it gets. This is great fun, just not knowing. For a while, we can all imagine we're winners. I think we're all on the podium, regardless.
:D
He said his bro beat him by 0.08.
Got Calculator?
:D
gamerxe 08-13-2001, 01:20 AM hey its mark (the infamous brother to jeddy). I was tied with dave rock going onto this event at 1898. He is currently driving back from the colorado national event. To bad for him. My time
was a 36.305 i believe, that paxes out to a 28.393. It should have been much better but the car is being tuned for topeka so it was alittle off for this event, hence the spin and bashing if the timing light. I think it is around a 944 score. check out the pax calc on the azsolo2 site, it does an automatic calc for all classes. It will be really close that's for sure.
mark:D
BTW - you all neded ot come down to tucson and reaaly put that all wheel drive to the test. The courses here are long, fast and loose!
Red-Impreza 08-13-2001, 01:23 AM Oooo... I believe that puts Mark first, me second, and Mike third (all of us covered by less then 20 points, depending on how the PAX works out on this last event). Nice showing by the Eddy brothers. Each wining his class. Congrats.
John,
Are you running in STS next season? It'll be a good battle.
Hmmm... now if we could just get Mark in a Subaru.
Bud said all of his fans were #1 when he was at the starting line
-Just a little show of affection for the peanut gallery. ;) Spreadin' the love, baby. Spreadin' the love. ;) BTW: You had a couple nice runs in that dub, as well. When are you joining the cult of Subaru?
-Bud
[Edit: Forgot about Rock. I expect he's going to be 2nd and me and Mike will end up 3rd and 4th, still all covered by 20 points or so. Wow!]
jeddy 08-13-2001, 03:23 AM Yup, i guess i'll be running in STS from now on. Or maybe i should spread the Scoobies around by running DSP... nah! =P
jon (everyone misspells that)
The way I worked out STS was that you only beat Mike by a handful of PAX in the last event, this time his 36.1 was a much bigger margin (20pts or so) and may be enough to clinch 1st place.
We'll see how it pans out, it's gonna be close.
gamerxe 08-13-2001, 01:48 PM :D :D :D :D
I am going to probably buy a scooby after the nationals. I have driven Jon's and almost duplicated my best times in the honda with his stock scooby (within .3 of a second). Besides, my wife was really pissed that i dented HER car with the timing light. oops!
I also just did a few calcs and if the time for mike is good then he either beat me overall by a point or we are tied in first at 1901 points
Mark
:D  :D
that auto-x ruled. I really liked the course and actually running with you guys and watching everyone. I thought everyone did awesome and I think everyone is in the top 4 for sure. Hopefully I have second behind Jon, unless someone snuck in a good run without me noticing.
BTW Jon, how did the in car camera work out, got any good footage? And you'll have to share sometime how you did it.
ron
dubdrvrkev 08-13-2001, 08:12 PM Well Bud I don't know about when I will join the cult. Maybe next year when I can afford a WRX ( wagon I'm thinkin'). Then I can go thrash the grocery getter. I will keep the ol' Dub too, it is a blast to race, you know loose and underpowered. hehe
This race I did clinch my huge class of two people. It was tight though I was leading by 6pt. (or thirty according to pylon press) going into this event.
Red-Impreza 08-14-2001, 01:19 AM 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th... it's all good! You can probably still cover us all by a hand full of PAX. :D
loose and underpowered
Reminds me of my... naw, it's too easy. ;)
Jon (with no 'h'),
Stay in STS. We've got a BMW to humble next season. :D
