Thanks. Unabomber 07-27-2005, 10:38 AM 1. Motor Oil: Mobil 1 5W30. I used to use Mobil 1 Delvac, but found it too expensive. Regular Mobil 1 is cheap, good stuff, and you simply can't go wrong. 2. Drain plug: Fumoto Oil Valve. I installed this with my first oil change. Crush washers? We don't need no stinking crush washers! 3. Oil filter: Purolator Pure One. It's a great filter, about the same price as the OEM one, and is more convenient to buy. 4. Transmission & Differential fluid: Regular 75W90 gear oil. I used to use Mobil1 and it caused a lot of the shifting irregularities that are discussed here on NASIOC. I recently switched back again and my shifting has returned to normal goodness. 5. Air Filter: OEM paper filter. I used to use a Perrin foam filter. In my opinion, foam filters just don't filter as good as a paper unit. Since they don't really add any power, I would prefer the better filtration. 6. Coolant: Subaru cooling system conditioner, Red Line Water Wetter, 1 gallon of distilled water, and 1 gallon of Peak Global Extended Life coolant. 7. Brake Fluid: Castrol LMA. 8. Spark Plugs: NGK double plat PFR7B (NGK Part Number 4853) one step colder. They needed a slight adjustment to meet their supposed out of the box gap of .030. kcismo 07-27-2005, 11:20 AM thanks unabomer maxpower45 07-28-2005, 01:28 PM 4. I couldn't find any name brand gear oil, so I got the ghetto stuff. As long as it is API certified, its really all the same to me. VBVA 07-28-2005, 05:13 PM Valvoline makes Subaru's 75W-90 that a dealership will normally use. The Coastal 75W-90 is the exact same stuff and goes for a lot less money. I use Coastal and there is no difference in the performance. Psydotek 07-28-2005, 06:05 PM Here's my selections: Engine Oil - AMSOil 5w-30, about $7 a quart after shipping. OEM Filters Only for me. No fumoto for me, just don't forget pick up a drain plug crush washer. Transmission Oil - Neo Synthetic HD 75w-90 for the gearbox, Mobil-1 Synthetic for the rear differential. No grinding issues here. Brake Fluid - OEM for now, but i plan on switching to ATE Super Blue at my next change. Coolant - 1 gallon of Subaru Coolant, 1 gallon of distilled water, 1 bottle of Subaru coolant conditioner, 1 bottle of Redline Water Wetter. Put the water wetter and coolant conditioner in separately and use the whole bottle for both. For the coolant and distilled water, mix them first then fill the cooling system with as much as it'll take. Power Steering Fluid - OEM Subaru stuff found at the dealer. jac04 07-28-2005, 07:25 PM Be aware that individual results may differ, especially when using synthetic oil for the transmission. I used the Neo RHD 75W-90 and had a little grinding issue. I don't know how the RHD and HD differ. The 'safest' oil to use is a conventional oil without limited slip additives. Psydotek 07-28-2005, 08:16 PM Yeah, gear oil is kinda hit and miss for alot of people. You kinda have to experiment until you find one you like. 2k2BlackWRX 08-01-2005, 06:21 PM I used the mobil 1 Gear oil for a year and it was MISERABLE Grinding all the time. I switched to 100% Redline Lightweight shockproof and its 1000x better with no grinding problems at all and much smoother shifting. |
