View Full Version : How comforable is the STi Titanium shift knob?
Alan B 08-12-2001, 03:20 PM I'd like to keep my car as Subaru as possible, so I'm thinking about buying the STi shift knob.
I'm used to rounded knobs. What do owners think about the comfort/ergonomics of the STi knob?
I'd be especially interested in comments from someone who has done some track days with this knob.
Thanks in advance,
Alan B
Zahnster 08-12-2001, 03:41 PM I've not used it myself, but I know it is quite small compared to the factory shift knob. I'm interested in this as well....
nuetz 08-12-2001, 04:35 PM ill let you know in a coupe of days when mine arrives....ordered it from subaruparts.com
geremy 08-12-2001, 04:43 PM Hi, it is small.
You may have to adjust your shifting.
But overall it rocks.
nick dickitt 08-12-2001, 04:52 PM The titanium gets HOT. Once you get passed how hot it is, it is great. Makes shift feels solid..And it looks good too.
go go go 08-12-2001, 06:11 PM I love it but it does get real hot. After I park my car under the sun, I cannot touch is until it cools down. It takes about 5 min.
WRX02CRH 08-12-2001, 11:56 PM Me likes mine.
Zahnster 08-13-2001, 12:31 AM I've heard of one person who covers it with a sock when parked. Keeps it cool and lessens chance someone might want to acquire it from you.
Fubaru 08-13-2001, 12:32 AM I'd hope it's darn comfortable for $107
List is supposedly $150 (!)
WRX02CRH 08-13-2001, 12:45 AM Got mine for free since my dealer was late on delivery. :)
Noots 08-13-2001, 01:26 AM I just got mine last week (from subaruparts.com) and I love it. Nothing beats the soft feel of titanium and it perfectly matches the color of the faux-aluminum trim. It is slightly smaller than the stock knob, but I haven't had any problems shifting with it. Plus, you get a cool faux-carbon-fiber STI shift-pattern sticker. Now, it does look cool, but why would you ever make a sticker out of carbon fiber?
geremy 08-13-2001, 01:31 AM 1) It doesn't get that hot...not unbearable anyways. Think of it as teaching you to shift quicker...
2) That's not faux carbon fiber, that's the real deal buddy. It's neat too, if you let it sit out in the sun long enough, I swear it glows green! (let it sit in the sun and drive it into the garage). I think it's neat.
FirmWind 08-13-2001, 04:12 AM geremy, where do you affix the sticker??
vinster02 08-13-2001, 04:27 AM I've had a chance to spend some time with a wrx that had the wrc ti shift knob & fell instantly in love with it. I'll add one to my rex as soon as some of the other upgrades are paid for.
geremy 08-13-2001, 09:26 AM There seemed to be a nice blank space right below and to the left of the shifter.
loanshark 08-13-2001, 02:23 PM Hey, what does it look like?!?
HongKongBeef 08-13-2001, 04:57 PM I love my STi Titanium shift knob.. It is smaller, which i like better. fits my hand better. It does get VERY HOT... I left my car in sacramento a couple times. the 1st time I almost got 3rd degree burns on my right hand. The knob did not cool down for ~10 mins.. The 2nd time I covered it up with a towel before i left my car. The knob was STILL HOT as hell at the end of the day. Not as bad as the 1st time, but still WAY hot.. The knob is worth it though.
FirmWind 08-13-2001, 08:14 PM I've got this knob too. It was actually smaller than the picture would suggest in Subaru.com. So if you like feeling something substantial in your hands while you shift, this knob is prob. not for you. I happen to like the styling cuz I don't have any other interior mods to the car except this one, so its simplicity and stylishness stand out when you first look in the car. I also like the uniqueness of it: most other people get Momo knobs or some fancier looking knob. The size: look at the top of your shift boot, the knob's max circumference is only maybe 2-3 mm more than that. It's also very durable (titanium, duh!), so it'll withstand many years of aggressive driving:)
As to hot knob: just turn on the ac, it's located pretty close from the vents, it'll cool down after a short while.
DoubleD 08-14-2001, 03:06 PM I like mine too. It feels a bit different, but that serves as yet another reminder that you're driving a different kind of car. The heat hasn't been as much of a problem as I had anticipated. When I shift, it's not on the knob long enough to hurt (much!). Don't rest my hand on it, either, which is a no-no, anyways.
