The installation was was very straight forward, following the directions posted by mywrx in April, thank you. I am glad the instructions were available on the i-club as it came w/o any. I suggest it (myrex's thread) be moved to the Mods section, even though it does not have photos, it was easy to follow.

Took a short drive, the shifts are positive and firm. Very nice.

I'll pickup the titanium shift knob on Tuesday, my dealer(parts manager) is matching subaruparts.com prices. That is where I picked up the short shifter also.

Get a set of the Kartboy bushings and put those in. Big difference.

I'm confused. Is this the SPT (Subaru Performance Tuning) short shifter that is in the WRX accessories brocure and available at dealerships or is it an actual shifter from STI. I was given an SPT shifter from the dealer and I really like it, but nowhere on the box or in the paperwork they gave me does it say anything about STI. Someone told me that SPT = STI, but I have been unable to confirm this. I have not been able to find any info on an STI shifter, only SYMS. What is the part number on your shifter?

Thanks,

Punk

I had mine installed at the dealer when i picked up the car.. I was under the impression that it was not SPT, but STi. The real question is, does it seem like you need a different shift boot? Mine has a lot of extra material with the shorter shifter. Looks a little sloppy..

Dr. Zevil,

Do you still have the box the new shifter came in? After installing my shifter they put my stock one back in the box. The box has the Subaru part number on it. If you still have it could you check the number?

Interestingly - I did a search on STI short shifter on Google and I can't find an STI short shifter. Found lots of STI stuff, but no STI short shifter. This seems to confirm my suspicions that people are calling the SPT shifter an STI shifter. I know there is a SYMS shifter but I don't think a true STI shifter exists.

The boot and shifter height looks the same as stock to me. The throws are definitely shorter and much more precise. A knotchy kind of feel.

Just wondering . . .

thanks,

Punk

I got the same question as "PunksWRX". Is the short shifter on the WRX accessories brocure is made by Sti?? And also what is the different for the one on the WRX accessories brocure and Kartboy 's short shifter?? i know the pirce is around $200 for the Sti compare with $100 Kartboy. Will they make any big different for the whole set of short shifter and just a shifter??
and changeing to the Kartboy or Cusco bushings really make big different??
HOpe that someone can help me on that~
Thanks

wrxwing,

The Kartboy consists of a replacement shift lever that uses the stock shifter linkages and bushings. You can buy Kartboy bushings too that replace the stock bushings. I think the Kartboy is a great product and I was intending to get it, but like I said earlier, I was given the SPT shifter for free so I couldn't pass it up. Most people on I-Club rave about the Kartboy shifter. The SPT shifter is an entire replacement shifter assembly including the lever linkages and bushings. I would imagine the Cusco or Kartboy bushings would work well to make any short shifter system better.

The part # for the short shifter is C1010FA001. My understanding is also SPT=STI. I think SPT is just a US marketing tool.

The bushings in this shifter are definitely stiffer than stock. How they compare to Cusco or Kartboy I don't know.

I just checked Glenn's site, www.new-impreza.com and there is no mention of an STI short shifter there either.

The part number on Glenn's site for the Subaru short shifter is: C1010FA000

The part number for the shifter I received is:
C1010FA001 (only difference is the last digit - ??????)

I ran the part number (C1010FA001) through www.subaruparts.com and it came back as a short throw shifter for $206.70 - nothing about STI.

Punk,

Try this site, www.challengerdeep.com. Go to subaru parts->Impreza->transmission. They list a STI quick shifter. The picture looks identical to what I put in. They show the manufacturer as STI/Prodrive.

The bushings in the STI (or STP if you want to call it that) are still rubber-not much different than stock ones. The Cusco bushings are polyurethane. They make a big difference and I highly recommend installing them with whatever short shifter you use.

My short shifter (whatever it may be) was installed at the dealer.. hence no box or part number. I don't know if the STi is the SPT, but I like it either way. It is SUPER notchy. Very fun to drive. I am very curious as to who makes this shift kit.. I think I need a smaller shift boot. I was able to drive all the way to work today with my zippo actually in the shift boot.. seems like there is too much material there.

And it appears that I should install cusco (kartboy?) bushes on the linkage...
Where do I get these from guys...???
I don't want to do this job twice.

The bushings are quite a bit far away from the shifter mechanism itself. I'm under the impression the STI/SPT shifter doesn't come with any replacement bushings, it's just a replacement of the linkage(which may or may not be identical to stock).

Oldnslow, said that the bushings in the STi shifter are rubber and would benefit from replacement.....
Which ones do I replace guys??
I don't mind how many I've got to change, I'd appreciate all the info I can get...!!!:)

Barney,

The bushings in the STI shifter are firmer than OEM. The Kartboy and Cusco may be firmer yet. The install of the shifter is not that bad. I would suggest you try the STI as is first. Then if you feel you need firmer shifts, try one of the above bushings.

When you intall the shifter, you will see that replacing the bushings at later date would be easy mod, as the bushings are easy to get to.

BigSky, you're right, I'll try it first, if I'm not happy I'll go with the firmer bushes!
