I was under the car for like 1/2 hour yesterday trying to figure out how to get the old one out. There isn't much room to maneuver. both ends are wide and the MODS instruction says push it against the stud, but that just poke the thing into the bushing, and the oem bushing stays where it is.
so I gave up and put everything back. and then I popped out the shifter and put some grease in the socket and called it a day

It takes a little bit of massaging, then some more massaging :)
Like the instructions said, just push the bushing against the stud. Wiggle it a bit, try to massage the stock bushing out a bit.
The new bushings go in like cake though, being two pieces and all.
I just parted out my stuff a couple days ago, let me tell you, getting it out was a whole lot harder than getting it in :)

This makes removing the bushing easier: screw the nut back on to the stud (without the big washer). Tug on the shifter arm, and voila, the arm will slip off the bushing like butter.
I wish I could give credit to who thought of this first but I can't remember which I-clubber posted it. Tribal knowledge rules!

I did mine as scientifically as as possible.
I searched around for the biggest knife i could find in the garage, a bouie knife is what i came up with. Got under the car, hacked that B**ch into about fifty million pieces, and voila! wouldn't you know it popped right out of there....no muss no fuss...just like that!
like i saw posted one time before..."just close your eyes and tell yourself, 'it's just a piece of rubber, it's just a piece of rubber... then go for it!"
On my RS this took me the better part of an hour to do. And I had to resort to the knife method (although all I had was a &^$%&^ carpet knife).
I put the Cobb short shifter on my WRX last week using the 'leverage' method and it took me all of about 10 min to do. Just took a few tries to get the lever in the right place.

that sounds excellent :) Next time I jack up the car for whatever reason I'm going to do that. Maybe a even bigger nut would help?
I didn't want to hack up the oem bushing because I may want to go back to using it. Hey, I am probably the only one who put in the kartboy short shifter and then replaced it with the stock one.
