I have a WRX Wagon. Has anyone installed Shoulder Harnesses? Anyone recommend where to buy them?

You could install one, connecting the tail strap to the left-rear C-pillar, using the exisiting upper left-rear seat belt bolt. Just get a harness that has a removable tailstrap (ala Schroth, and others), to allow the rear seat to be used if necessary.

I know this isn't the answer you're looking for, but I really hate to see people die for no reason. The proper way to install harnesses is with a real (competition) roll bar; any other method will put you at great risk if you roll.

There have been several threads on this topic; try searching seat belt or shoulder harness or harness (although the last one will get you a bunch of wiring messages too). One thread I remember was at http://www.i-club.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=76110 .

Good luck with your decision-making process and your installation.

I realize that you intend the rollbar to be of some protection to your head should you roll over and are using a harness.

However, the difficulty I have with that arguement is...what's the difference between wearing a harness and rolling over and wearing the stock belt?? It's not like you'll have the presence of mind to get out of your stock belt in order not to have your head crushed should it happen.

I wear a harness in my RS. Rollovers are rare. Reducing bodily injury in an auto accident has everything to do with restricting movement of the body during the crash. Metal intrusion is much less likely to cause bodily injury compared to the body moving against itself and hitting things while moving.

If you do not install a roll bar, the only ones I would recommend are the Schroth Rally type belts. In a collision and/or roll over it has a built in mechanism that provides some give and direction of body movement to minimize occupant injury. It is also DOT/TUV approved.

I would not use the competition harnesses that you mainly see, unless you have a roll bar. They have no give and really strap you in erect. In a roll over situation you are so rigid and erect you run the risk of spinal and neck injuries. If you are on the track with a helmet, with the extra thickness of the helmet, there is even less distance to the roof.

For the street the stock seatbelts and air bags actually do quite well. They also provide some give and movement necessary afterwards, in roll over and collisions.

This has been hotly disputed in the BMW driver's education events. I am summarizing the end result which most have concluded. Each to their own, it's your body. But if you track the car, rollovers are not that rare. I see them quite frequently actually. I was at Roebling Road and a BMW E30 rolled over right in front of me thru a turn, almost hit him upside down.

Recently an E36 M3 crashed in excess of 80 mph and immediately rolled over. They had stock seat belts on and no injury. They said if they would have had competition shoulder harnesses on, surely there would have been injuries. The crash was so violent, the whole roof pretty much crushed in.

Please read the thread I mentioned above for a few stories about rollovers and the wisdom of using harnesses without a rollbar. It may not change your mind, but it should give you something to think about.
