Brian Lock places in top 5
Brian Lock of Scotts Valley, CA in the #44 Subydude.com/DMS/Goto: Racing Subaru WRX
One of the maneuvers at a sharp turn on the course caught him by surprise, and he could do nothing more than turn the wheel hard and hang on. The dent on the fender was impressive, but he was in good spirits; I recall he got 4th place. Pretty darn good, considering how tricky all the turns were (I saw numerous crashes from all the races on Saturday, car parts flying off, and they even had to put up a concrete divider, I guess to make drivers slow down before one of the sharper turns.) Concrete walls everywhere, plus an amazing number of twists and hard turns, bumps, and (light)rail tracks make this one of the most challenging courses out there. Awesome fun (for people NOT racing the course ;).
Brian's car - a heavily modded Subaru, fared much better than the Mini Coopers (smaller, higher center of gravity). To illustrate: One of the Mini Coopers had its entire front end smashed, and was hauled back with solemn ceremony to the paddock, along with several other cars. Brian's team showed great support all around.
What a great race.
